Tail-set are my way to fish them, shrimp can't escape from ambush as the hook from the tail preventing them to sneak, they can live for hours if you just let it swim at their free will without keeps retrieving it or jerk them. As for night fishing , the predators always knew which spots to expect their food to hide from the strong currents , you'll be amazed at how the shrimps are excellent fish-searcher at night. Head are good when fishing on sunny day with high clarity , their eyes creates reflections under the sunlight to attracts fishes. Also i noticed fishes like bream , mangrove snapper , fingermark, tarpon , grouper , cod , and sea bass always engulf the head first , so it's better you set the hook on the front if you are targeting for the fishes I mentioned above... I always check for their mouth and from what i saw , the head always went in first. Have a nice fishing trip , everyone ! Good luck and stay safe !

Interesting thanks JC. Here in the UK, folks tend to use bait more than lures but we don't get live shrimp of that size. I've bought some frozen ones to experiment with, so your different ways of hooking them was useful. Stay safe & well! 👍👍

I generaly hook them through the "tail hook up" when fishing. But when I find the sheepshead I hook them through the head. I found the striped bandits like the crunchy side of the shrimp. Thanks for your knowledge.

Great Video! Thanks. Problem with ANY Tail hooking is the Little Crap fish you don't want to catch.... destroys your shrimp... leaving JUST THE hook and a little tailmeat left. Shrimp Bait is now expensive!!! I go for the Thru the Horn Method!

Very interesting JC. My Snook buddy went out one night with mad snooker. Winter Snook. So shrimp was used. Lol 33 years ago. Anyway Dave p. Was using small # 2/0 mustad hooks. The bronze colored ones. And that night they was hooking the shrimp in the crown. I'm still using this method for Winter Snook back in the creeks and rivers. If I have big selects I will use 3/0. I have caught thousands of winter Snook with this method.

I caught one of my biggest Snook on a live shrimp in a creek on a very cold, cold night in late December years ago. Maybe I'll hit that bridge this winter and see what happens.
@Floridawoodsbanshee

@@RadReelingFishing yes sir. I have a honey hole I did the same thing 4 years ago. I was combat fishing. Was standing on big rocks under a bridge. Very difficult when getting old. Reached down grabbed her by the tail. She literally blasted me with water and took off again. I couldn't stop her the second time. My PB is 44 from my mid 20's Dunedin causeway. This one was about the same and it was December as well. What I like about the mustad hooks is they match the shrimp. And as you know break off's happen. The hooks rust out in 3 days. That's important for me because I mostly target donkeys and I do get broken off alot. Unfortunately

@@RadReelingFishing well? How did you do JC? I had a very slow December & January. Couple of big girls. All break offs. Or I pulled the hook palming the spool trying to keep em out of the structure. The water in Pasco has been iffy. Saw alot of Jack's swimming in circles. Also some dead bait. Back in the anklote river I saw oil slick one night. To many people in this area now. Snook are not acting right. I normally do very good this time of year

Great demonstration. Good footage! From my experience if I know I’ll be getting bites pretty quick I’ll usually hook them in the tail, if I’m searching for fish I like to hook em in the horn, seems like they stay alive longer that way

Great video JC. I prefer hooking my shrimp though the head because I feel like they stay alive longer because once you hook them in their tail you let water enter their body which I think the shell is meant to keep out. But the way you hook through the head is more natural I was doing it from the top not underside. And also bigger fish will treat the shrimp different so you get a better chance of booking up

Nice video JC! Cool to see how the shrimp moves with each way. Do you always use black hooks? I've gone to silver colored hooks most of the time when using shrimp, pinfish and mullet for bait. I think it might not be as noticable as the black hooks? Don't know if it's true but seems to work for me.

Another Great video JC, I wonder if one day you could do Another experiment with hooking the shrimp different ways and let's see the hook up ratio? I usually always hook my shrimp through the horn because I feel like he looks more natural swimming. Also when hooked that way using a popping cork you can see him jumping out the water from predator fish I have caught really nice fish this way but I have missed a lot of good fish because they'll bite him in half and completely miss the hook! Thx for sharing this video man it surely makes me look at my rigging methods differently!!

Head or Tail , that depends on the fish you're going after for. From where I am , lutjanus tends to go for the head first , they cant resist that good-looking reflective pair of eyes ! When water clarity is very clear , I tends to set on the tail and let the shrimp do all the work going deep exploring the bottom , also shrimps live longer if you set the hook at the tail

What size hook are you using? Some guys in Texas like to use small trebles like size 8. I've gone to using the smallest, highest quality hook I can get away with in a size 2, 3, or even 4 circle hook with an offset bend to help with hook up ratio. Problem with a big hook is they can see it and the trash fish will bite off the shrimp and leave the rest on the hook.

Yes Inshore but the Khale (Mustad 37140 or Owner 5173) hook is a better hook up ratio and tends to not hook them deep in the mouth but more on the lip or corner preventing line chaffing/ lost fish imho.

I recently fished for a few days using live prawns (Australian), the hook placement and the way the prawn swam wasn't the real problem, i found that if i hooked in the head, fish would attack the tail, if i hooked the tail, fish would attack the head, causing lower hookup rates as i assumed the fish could see and avoid the hooks.
