If you want to hook a bowling ball like a professional is not that hard once we break it down into 4 simple things
First, look at the hand position at the start of the release, notice that the hand is right behind the ball and it is not on the side or above the ball. It is right behind.
Second, from that point the hand starts to turn around to create the axis rotation to hook the ball and notice that the movement is made with their hand and it's not made with their elbow as it is the most common mistake people make.
Third, notice that the thumb comes out of the ball first in a split second and later they use their 2 middle fingers to grab and pull the ball in which case the faster you do this the more revolutions you will create.
And last but not least, notice that the follow-through is always the same to hit their target. Most people try to hook the ball with their arm, so make sure you practice these 4 things so you can start hooking the ball like the professionals

Having the ball drilled properly is the first, most important step..
@cryptonator1988
@cryptonator1988 4 месяца назад
This is super important otherwise ball feels heavy or fingers too tight and the ball won't hook at all if drilled wrong.. its hard to find someone who can drill a ball properly without thinking they are know it alls.. they always wanna tell me whats best for me like you don't even know how i bowl and want to tell me to drill it pin down like no i want pin up i get pro shops argue instead of doing what im paying them too do. Last few balls i got drilled they didn't hook at all ive never had this issue until someone drilled it not the way i asked them too..

I averaged around 170 in league until someone spent half an hour teaching what you’re teaching. Within two months and good amount of practice I was a scratch bowler and had a 300 game in league play. Sadly, I got busy doing other things and never played after that year 25 years ago.

@jameshendricks8526

@oginaz I've been bowling for about 30 years. The premise is still the same. The way this video is explaining it is the exact same way I was taught back in the mid 90s. Very little has changed with my approach and release. Most of my adjustments are made by where I'm standing when I'm set. To flatten the ball out, I don't flare out my index finger like they show in the paused spot. The only thing I would say that I was taught that he doesn't say is the ball should come off the index finger like you are pointing at the pins. The further I flare out my index finger, the more the ball hooks. My very first nonplastic ball was a sports tec and now I use a roto grip hustle. I only use one ball. I've never used a spare ball. My very first ball was Wildfire plastic ball from K-mart.

exactly why bowling is dumb. the 95% of the game is just one mechanic that relies on partially oiled lanes. i mastered the hook shot in the first 6 months of bowling and averaged 200-210 per game. after that i realized the ENTIRE game is really just that one mechanic and making small gains in being a better hook shot master. that's when i quit bowling and decided golf and tennis were more enjoyable (also outside), and would rather jog and lift weights for exercise. i started day one with a 20 year player teaching me the hook shot and bough balls with cores he recommended. so i didn't waste any time. i was schooled on how lanes worked with oil. i quickly got to where guys get in 5 or 10 years in 6 months. bowling to me a shallow sport. nowadays i only bowl with friends and family to have fun, drink beer, and use house balls. i'm so glad i didn't put 10 years into bowling to find out what I did in 6 months. cheers.

@u235u235u235 you do realize the people commenting on this thread are just average bowlers right? I doubt the average person on this thread spends more 4 to 8 hours a week bowling depending on how fast the teams bowl during league. I would venture to say that the majority on this thread, though they may bowl league, only bowl on their league nights for the same reasons you said, friends, family and having drinks. The people on this thread aren't pros and most don't strive to be.

@@jameshendricks8526 good points. I was getting a little emotional in my post. I bowled four days a week for six months directly under the training of a failed professional bowler (my cousin) who left the "sport" to support his wife and children. at some point you have to give up on failed dreams and get a job to pay the bills. but yes, bowling with friends, family, beer and having a good time using house balls is now my interest in bowling.

Biggest thing above and beyond anything else is to cup the hand/wrist from the start. It’s hard to see bowlers doing it, but anyone with a hook (especially if their thumb is in) is starting from a cupped position. Also, watch any of the bowlers release here, you will see a slight bend in the elbow on the downswing which quickly straightens out at release point (which is when the thumb comes out). Knowing all of these mechanics, I still struggle to get high revs myself… it’s a work in progress.
@woodcutter6235

I’m with you, not much rev. And the more I think about it the worse I do.🤦🏼‍♂️
@keithhuggins8531
@keithhuggins8531 Год назад
Cupping from the start is an option but it typically leads to injury and/or locking up your wrist. Another option is at the peak of your back swing pause a moment and at that point get into your position. Cupped under and inside the hall. When you do it here you let the weight of the ball get you into position vs muscling it.
@iyekane95
@iyekane95 Год назад
Many pros play inside without a cup.
@moabsmurf
@moabsmurf Год назад
If you're just learning, a cupped wrist will injure your wrist. This is something you have to do gradually to train and strengthen your wrist. Also, as previously mentioned, it is not necessary. Just working the inside of the bowling ball will push you at or over 300 rpm, which is where most pros throw.

@procrastinator6902
@procrastinator6902 Месяц назад
@@nicholasdurham7608Your wrist needs to be cupped and behind the ball, the snap of suddenly straightening it out and rotating your hand gives the ball revolutions. It is possible to let the ball hang down from your hand and use just the fingers to push off with, but that doesn't give you good revs at all and is the style more commonly used by women.

This is a good explanation, but it doesn't mention that you absolutely have to develop the finger, hand and wrist strength to turn the ball like the guys in the video. You also need the technique, but "just anyone" can't do what the bowler in the video is doing simply by learning the release. The average person can't possibly turn the ball like this pro is doing without some serious work.

But for one if you wanna get better instead of walking to the lane first walk up to the line and let your arm just swing. When you’re bowling your arm should work like a pendulum.. it swings back and forth in the same line. So as your taking your steps to throw your shot, you push/guide the ball out swing our arm back and as you get to the line try and hit your target on the lane that you are aiming for. Try slowing down your arm swing on your approach too. It take repetition and understanding of what the lanes are doing so you have to really take the time to practice and study

This could be the dumbest video of all time. Swinging a golf club like a pro is not that hard, we'll break it down in this video.

The ball matters. You'll never hook a house ball like a good ball no matter how much you try to

@@chriskarley384House balls are the bowling balls the alley provides, they usually have plastic covers that don’t hook at all. So if you plan on hooking the ball a lot you need to buy a reactive resin or urethane cover bowling ball from a pro shop.
