How to Hook Up a Gas Dryer 

Since it's a gas line I believe that the plumber's tape should be yellow rather than white as yellow is for gas lines. Thanks for the video!

As noted earlier posts, use a gas tape and check for leaks with a soapy solution.

Good stuff! My mom needs a new dryer and the Lowes team wanted $150 to install it. I'm thinking, "It can't be THAT hard." You showed me that it's not. I'm so thankful for videos like these. I can't imagine how much money I've saved myself and my mother, doing all of this by myself. Pretty good video here. Really liked the use of open end wrenches . Teflon tape on the flared end of the adapters is not really necessary but this guy did keep it back away from the sealing surfaces which is important and really caused no harm. I always used just a small drop of 3-in-1 oil just to get little lube at that connection.

I had a pipefitting class once and in that class they said teflon tape is not for sealing, it is to make easy the removal of fittings at a later time if needed.

2 things, pipe sealant tape only goes on pipe thread. The flared fittings have tapered threads, the dryer and the hard pipe have pipe thread and should get the tape. The second problem I see here, is he goes on about replacing the hose, and doesnt replace the flare fitting adapter on the house pipe. These pieces should only be used once, again, as its a tapered seat, the old fitting has a really good chance of not making a good seal with the new hose. Thats why the hose comes with them.

You always produce such high quality tutorials. Can you believe I don't even know if I have a gas or electric dryer. I know I have a gas furnace and hot water heater but I'm clueless about my dryer. I'm going to poke around tomorrow just to see if I can figure out which type I have. I know there's a vent hose but that's about all I know. I'm going to look at it tomorrow to see if there's a gas supply line connected to the dryer. I'd assume that if I don't see that then I have an electric.

So many things wrong with this install. First, you don't need to shut off the main, just the valve at the appliance. Second, you NEVER use a plastic foil flex hose right out of the dryer exhaust. Always use solid duct pipe or aluminum flex duct. Third don't suggest using a pipe wrench on a hex nut...theyre designed for open ended or adjustable. Fourth, you never use white Teflon plumbers tape...always pipe dope or yellow tape made for gas connections. Fifth, you never use tape or dope on flanged fittings, which you did for both ends here. Sixth, you used the new hose, but the old flange fittings. Theres a reason the kit comes with new male flanges. Finally, you don't test the new joints with soap.

Hey guy's watching just wanted to share some things here. -Be sure to change the entire fitting and not only 1 end of it and use pipe dope or gas pipe tape not plumbers tape. -If you live in Ontario or somewhere else where flex line is not permitted for the general dryer venting use (not talking about the gas line) you must have solid fabricated vent fittings which you can tape with aluminum tape or a hose clamp and never use screws. -once everything is hooked up and you are ready to open the gas from outside on the main line then the shut off at the appliance. be sure to spray soapy water on the fittings by the appliance or anywhere they may have moved some and look for bubbles at least to be sure if their is gas leaking from your installation. -also if you are watching this video and don't have a license to install a new appliance you should call a professional as is the law, the above is just in case you don't care in order to minimize risk to your life. Gas is very dangerous.

This video never mentions checking for gas leaks. You should always check for gas leaks after turning the gain line/main back on.

Does the main gas line need to be shut off for the home or it is fine to just shut off the gas valve close to the dryer?

Very nice job, Bob! On not knowing if dryer is gas or electric - one advertiser on Craig's List said, "It's electric but can be converted to gas!" Another guy said, "It's a gas dryer but it's free because the heating element went out!" Anybody want to buy either of these? I laughed and laughed!

Might want to use gas tread tape which is yellow not white, which is normally for anything that involves water.

Im definitely not paying for this! The hardest part is probably finding people strong enough to hall the damn thing away or get the new one into the basement.

Unfortunately in new areas you do not always smell gas, it takes a while for the system to get seasoned. PS nothing on the flared fittings. A detergent soap and water works great for looking for leaks then rinse off with fresh water.

Why turn it off at the main if you have a gas shut off right there by the connect?

Why shut off the main to the house when you have a perfectly good shut off valve on the line itself?

You applied pipe tape to a flared fitting. Teflon tape can cause a leak when using it on a flared fitting, you should only use it on straight fittings.

I have a gas dryer like this and my brother told me it needed to be grounded. Plugs in just like the one in the video. Is my brother wrong, or are these dryers already grounded?

Where do I get the adapter? I have a standard-sized supply line but the thread on the dryer is 3/4".

Wow, this guys is using the wrong thread seal tape. Should be yellow gas tape not white teflon tape (water). FYI!

Dont forget checking for gas leaks at both ends of that flex hose with dish soap and water... important !!

On all these videos they don’t seem to have a pilot light.? So you just hook up the gas line vent line and plug it in and you’re good to go

Didn't they say it's a 1 inch line? If it's larger than 1/2", isn't it supposed to be PINK tape?

Always use leak detection and check for leaks.

Also the guy NEVER checked for leaks. You spray a solution of water and dish soap on all gas connections and then watch for bubbles which indicates a leak. Come on that is just common sense!

Is plumbers tape Teflon tape? How many turns? Put tape on Clockwise? My gas line valve has a tiny square thing on it. Doesn't look like a regular nut shape. Do I use an adjustable wrench on it? Turn to right to shut off valve? Do I need a plumbers or gas fitter license to do this in my home? Thanks!

My wife and I lived in this house since 2008. The type of gas valve seems to be a old type of valve not the one seen in the video. If anyone can tell me how would you know if a new gas dryer can fit in old type of valve. The gas dryer would be located in a space near the kitchen.

Nope! Yellow tape is required specifically rated for natural gas and natural gas rated pipe dope should be used overtop of the tape to ensure leak-proof seal. Testing should be done as well. Spray on gas leak detection product and monitor for signs of bubbles which indicates leak.

wow you never use pipe dope or pipe tape on a flared fitting ever. only use on male fittings that are NON flared.

CAREFUL... NOT SUPPOSED TO USE TAPE ON FLARED FITTING!

You should NOT be using any thread sealer on a flare fitting.
