Thanks so much for the info. Although I've set up my own routers a couple of times in the last few years, my 71-year old memory doesn't function as well as it used to. Great explanation, thank you! I would only suggest that you do an actual demo, *showing* the lights, etc. as they come up, but I think this is still likely to be sufficient for my needs.

You need to show if there is a need to set up the connection type for both devices. Such as when to use PPPoE and when to set the Bridge mode on the device web interface.

im trying to hook my wireless router up to a modum/non-wireless router. i have internet when i am wired to the modum router, but when i hook up the wireless router there is no internet connection. i can find the wireless network but no internet access. i have hooked this router up to regular modums before but never a modum router, is there something different i have to do for this to work? thanks!

Thank you from this 66 year old woman ..lol.. needed to get the best information and I think you gave it...And another thing, I have Century Link for my internet and they are now installing a combo modem/router and it just doesn't work as well when I am wanting to watch anything streaming through my Roku. Someone told me that I would need to buy another router and that it would give it a boost. Its pretty sad when we have to buy an extra item to get the job done,, when Century Link thinks.. they are helping out their customers..

I can buy a Wifi Router. Modem combination (I was told this would slow down the internet) or get a stand alone Cable Modem and connect it to a Wifi Router for a stronger signal. Is this info accurate?? Thanks so much!!

what if I have a NETGEAR CABLE MODEM/ROUTER COMBO??? I have the new Netgear Nighthawk AX6000 DOCSIS 3.1 WiFi 6 Cable Modem Router CAX80-100NAS and I need to connect to my comcast tv box. Just wondering if this is any different in March of 2019 ? I want to get a fancy cable modem and a fancy router. But for about $ 100 more, I can get one unit that is a cable-modem-router. 99% of the time, it will just be my wired-pc, my wi-fi smart-tv, and my wi-fi phone or tablet. However, eventually, I want to get into gaming or have the capability for guest to do some gaming. I currently have Xfinity and purchased a NetGear 32 cable-modem-router ( around $ 200 a year ago ), but I would like to have faster internet.

eHowTech "between your house jack and your modem" so I can use the other end of my coxial cable for directv and put in in my modem without a problem?? That will not work your have to have a split so you have one cable going to your router and the other going to your tv? I would say a modem/ router is a good idea

Then you can login to your router from there.. That's the bit we need help with.... How to get the modem to recognise the router and let it do its job connecting devices to the net via your ISP.

Is there a reason why my router upload speed is significantly slower (.5 mbps), than when I connect directly to the modem? (3.5) mbps. Regardless of the device, whether wired or wireless, it is the same across the board. I even manually entered the modem's DNS and gateway addresses into the router. I updated router firmware, hard reset both devices, etc, etc.

I have a NetGear91 and he keeps asking for a Q3Code and I can't find it on the box or on the router itself. I have scanned everything on the router and on the box and it tells me "these are not the code", so where would that code be?

We have a cable modem and cable router. I got a tablet which only works on wireless. Is there a device that I can buy which connects to our cable router and which sends out wireless signals? I prefer to buy only a small device like the Netgear extender. But I was not sure whether the extender will create wireless when plugged into a cable router. Some people say it will only extend an already existing wireless router. I don't know what to do.

My modem is dual band 2.4 and 5 GHz, it probably uses the 5 Ghz band for LAN, won't this be a waste if it doesn't carry the 2.4 GHz to the router? Also, my modem is kinda a router too, it also gives a wifi connection, but i want to use a netgear router to make a new network.

Chokla no. You have to connect your router to the modem. Exactly how he does it in the video. So if your modem is upstairs then you can connect your router to it upstairs . If its downstairs then you have to keep it downstairs. Your cable box has nothing to do with the router or modem.

How do you connect a router to your modem WITHOUT an ethernet (cat5) cable?? I'm trying to connect my xbox to my router for internet at a different location of my house than my modem, I don't have a long enough ethernet cable and even if i did running a long cable through the house is obviously not desirable. The router used to be configured to the old modem we had, but now we have a new one. I've put a few hours in at least trying to figure it out.. Any help is vastly appreciated!

Far as I know you can't connect the modem and router without the cat5 cable. However you can connect the xbox via wifi to the router. With these netgear routers, their wifi signal goes pretty far. Hopefully you have the newer xbox 360 slim or xbox one as old model xbox 360 doesn't have built in wifi and you would have to try to hunt down the external wifi receiver.

What you want to do is called "cascading". Look it up on your router OEM website. It can be complicated.

I've have just gotten a new modem, the Cisco DPC3008, and it will not work with my router, the netgear n300 wireless router WNR200 v3... I've tryed everything and the only way to even get an internet connection is by plugging the modem directly into the pc, but there is no wifi... anyone have any ideas?

Make sure the modem is wifi compatible. It should be a Modem with wifi.

You use both all the time. The modem's job is to connect your home to your internet provider. The router's job is to route packets between your local network and the internet, hence the name "router".

I have a netgear 29 router, its like 7 years old,everything works pretfy well,im just wondering should i get a new router,since mines so old,have a ps3 hardwired,2 tvs, laptop,ipad, two 4 k players n a phone.
