Bank Holiday Monday 5th May 2014
The first two large boats, Fair Majesty is one, pass beautifully under Wroxham bridge, the third large one @0:49 Tropical Gem makes a big old mess and has to back out of it!
If in doubt please use the pilots available.

Potter Higham is another small one. The boats with forward steering position is the most difficult to steer if your not used to it. Some people just gather on the bridge to watch.

Guys, some of these bridges on the broads are hundreds of years old so do not play chicken with them. The broads are a wonderful place for inexperienced boaters to learn new skills but they are only safe if treated with respect. Follow these simple rules for success: A) Always use a pilot if one is available. If a pilot is not available, go for an ice cream and come back in 15 minutes and the pilot will probably be back. Their mobile number or VHF channel will be displayed on signage near to the bridge so drop them a text. B) A boat is not a car. It will not do what you expect it to do if you treat it like a car. C) Stop, fold down everything that folds, check your air draft, check again! Keep kids below decks and wear your life jackets. D) It is STILL not a car and WILL catch you out when you are approaching with lorries thundering overhead.

haha! I played golf with my dad on this decent golf course and we both sucked, were slow, and started to see people catching up from the holes behind us. A group eventually did catch us as we were about to tee off. I managed to pull off a beautiful swing that went straight down the fairway like a rocket (PHEW!). My dad stepped up and the pressure was on......He sliced it into a completely different fairway and politely asked the group of golfers watching us to play through. That, was a Potter Higham moment. The cringe was strong.

I remember parking up at the mooring and waiting for the pilot, as I believe it is required for hire boats, and seeing a blue hire boat just speed through ripping the roof off. I’ve been boating for over a decade and still use the pilot, I don’t really need to, some people really do need to. It’s funny tho

Personally I'd always use the Pilot. Sure there will be those very competent hirers who do it just perfectly, which then encourages those who are not so competent to 'give it a go' and perhaps save a few pounds in the process on pilotage fees, but If the Pilot made an error of judgement and did damage the costs of repair lay with their indemnity insurance - if a hirer makes an error and causes damage the 'damage waiver' won't cover them so all in all a rather risky decision to make.

I wonder how many boats have hit that bridge over the years, I know my brother in law did it about 50yrs ago when he forgot to put down one of the quarter windows and he was a an experienced boater been through the bridge dozens of times before that and hundreds of times afterwards only ever hit the bridge the once though

That bridge would have been worse off if the boats were narrowboats rather than broads cruisers and gin palaces, you would have heard a satisfying bong/bump noise with the narrowboat, you could have sunk those fibreglass hulls with a bridge strike.

Get an empty plastic box like an ice cream box and push it into a bowl of water. You can feel the pressure exerted upwards by the water right? That pressure has a force you can measure. Look at the amount of volume of water that has been displaced by the empty box. The upward force is equal to the weight of water that is displaced. A boat floats if the total weight of the whole boat, is less than the volume of water the boats hull displaces, or equally the upward force the water is generating against either the boat.

I'm a skipper on commercial vessels and ferries for the past ten years I think if you don't have enough experience you should not even be aloud to even skipper a vessel like that. would you let some one drive a car on L plates on there own with there family in it. my 11 year old has more experience than most private boat owners on the brouds he shocked every one in Wroxham ramworth Horning. Mooring a 42ft hire craft because that's all down to 3 years experience he has on the water as younger child.
@G1NZOU
@G1NZOU 3 года назад
The hire companies do warn people about bridge heights and give an instructional on how to operate the boats, if people are having trouble there usually is a person or two who can offer advice. First time we went sailing with a Hunter's Yard yacht we were having trouble tacking near Potter Heigham and a local in their riverside house gave us some tips. Bridge heights though are not something locals can help with, the air draught is displayed on the boat helm console and all the bridges have tide clearance markers, if you can't work out clearance then no one can help with that.

@davidchild8761
@davidchild8761 6 лет назад
Bow thrusters should not be used at bridges.
@bl7355
@bl7355 5 лет назад
Bow thrusters are totally inappropriate for this task because a) all you will be doing is fighting against your rudder and moving your centre of rotation further aft, b) as forward hull speed increases, the thruster becomes exponentially less effective due to the shape of the hull. If have seen many amateur boaters get themselves into much worse situations because they think a bow thruster is a magical cure all that overides the need to point their boat in the right direction in the first place.
@beyergarret123
@beyergarret123 4 года назад
An ability to steer in a stright line is all thats required, seems to work for everyone else.
@G1NZOU
@G1NZOU 3 года назад
Bow thrusters wouldn't help in this instance, they lost their nerve at the last moment and them reversing made their back end swing out, rather than going through steady. Just go through straight and true and you'll be fine, you don't need to bowthruster wiggle it through. I learnt on a boat that didn't have bow thrusters, and it's technically better to learn that way, as you get to understand just how boats steer and behave on the water without relying on modern conveniences.
