We headed back to Maryland this morning, even though the Pennsylvania season was in full swing. We did two completely different hunts here and our first was just as much fun as it was a surprise.
We set up in a known strut area under a well known roosting area and it worked. We waited for the birds to talk first and used that to our advantage, capitalizing on every gobble.
Matt, a Learn to Turkey Hunt member, went on his first, in person turkey hunt last year where he shot a jake in Maryland and then again in Pennsylvania. This was his first longbeard and what an incredible bird it was. It came into 15 yards, offered us some great footage and he dropped him in his tracks.
We didn't stop there as sunrise came in, we moved to the other side of the farm. Every 100 yards we would call and listen. The first set of gobbles we heard, we closed the distance and made it work.
Dustin was up to bat and he set the decoys out with the jake decoy intercepting the toms and the hen decoy. It worked out great as two longbeards made their way in to the set. Dustin's bird had 1.5" spurs and a 12.25" beard, his longest bearded bird to date! This turkey would have scored well over 72 and made it the top 4 in the county record book, but we hunt for us, not for the book!
