(How to Hunting) Randy Newberg's Bag Dump - Base Hunting Gear Package

Hunting with Randy Newberg does a Bag Dump. Everyone has a different type and amount of gear in their pack, based on hunting styles, hunting location, and species. It is the culmination of years of trial and error.
For me, I have a base gear kit that goes with me, no matter the location, season, or species. That base gear kit is what is covered in this video. Then, I add other items based on location, season, or species. In future episodes we will talk about what I add to this base gear kit that is dependent on location, seasons, and species.

I carry chem lights to use for markers when the sun sets. When I shoot an animal right before the sunsets, I snap one and hand it in a tree so I can reference where I shot from to minimize the track.

I’ve been around the hunting industry in one way or another since the late 1980’s. I appreciate more than you know when you tell us you aren’t getting paid for using certain things you use. That tells me that it really does work for you

Finally I found someone who is just like me packing everything in a back pack. My load gets so heavy that my knees barely mange the weight. But when I arrive to my spot, I have everything I need. In addition, I carry double the food /water amount that I need for the day, means if an emergency arises that I stay overnight, I got the food for next day. Thanks for the video.

I added a critical bleed kit after realizing the basic first aid kits can't handle the situation. They are very small so they don't add a lot of weight or take up a lot of room. If hunting solo, either a SPOT or InReach should be a must carry.

Great Video Randy. I'm a real Gak guy and like to keep some odd things with me. In addition to all your stuff I like to keep several ZipLock bags with me.. never know if you need to keep something dry or even if you want to collect water. Something else that I always did in the military is wrap some 1" gun tape around my knife sheath. Now with the invention of gorilla tape I have upgraded. Always there when you need it. Cordage is another think that I like to have either woven in a bracelet or just bundled in my pack. To each his own. great ideas for sure. Thanks for posting

Hi Randy... I like the items you carry on hunts. I will be making some changes after seeing what you carry. An additional use for the electrical tape is it is great for first aid. It stays in place better than Band-Aids and will stay in place better when wearing gloves etc. I also carry 550 paracord along with bank line and gorilla tape.

Great video Randy..... unfortunatly people get wrapped around the axle with gear thinking it will make them a better hunter/shooter. It is good to see what the other guy is using, but imo getting out for the day with your gear will tell you loads of data about your needs and gear that you can dump. I think you definately hit a lot of the must haves for a day hunt! (Except maybe and energy bar or two!) Thanks for posting!

If you are going to be walking downhill or on flat terrain for the majority of the day you will want to adjust your trekking poles so that your wrist is at a 90 degree angle. This results in less wrist strain and will take far more weight off your feet. Have a great day!

Try the Quick stiX hiking pole adapters to make your poles into shooting sticks. $45. and very light high impact plastic discs that clamp just below your handles. The absolute lightest way to have shooting sticks. I like my Norwegian HELLE GT hunting knife. It stays sharp a LONG time. Then I re-sharpen it with a small SMITH's sharpener.

Awesome information. I'd just add that a hunter living near sea level should check the function of their lighter at high altitude if they're headed to the mountains. The windproof torch lighter I bought in Texas was useless above 9,000 feet, at a time when it needed to work.
@petercasey175
@petercasey175 5 лет назад
As a Coloradan I can tell you that were using torches for... many things... at 12,000 and higher, I'd recommend vector.
@johnnelson4260
@johnnelson4260 4 года назад
I have never had a basic bic lighter fail me. Even up to 12,000 ft. If it is too windy for the bic, the little fire you’re trying to start doesn’t start much of a chance anyway. You are going to have to shelter it from the wind no matter what you do.
@170boone

Yes on the latex gloves. I’ve gutted hundreds of deer and it can get messy and I’ve never had a problem but on time I helped a guy gut a deer that had the stomach ruptured as well all have done. He had a small cut on his hand and contracted a serious blood infection from it. He lived thru it and survived but someone else might not have. Is it common? Not really but if a $1 pair of gloves could prevent $100,000 in hospital bills from an infection you might wear them just in case.

No, I'm not big on scent control. I was my clothes in the middle of a hunt with non-scented detergent, but our active hunts and the exertion required make scent control a waste of time and effort. For us, it is all about managing the wind.

Randy Newberg, Hunter which model of the caribou game bags would you recommend for an all around great game bag for elk, deer, antelope, and brown bear?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
Joseph Seibel For all around, including elk, I use the Elk Magnum bag set. Weighs a bit more, but worth the extra bags. Not sure if a brown bear hide would fit in the largest elk game bag. You might need to pick up a moose size bag for that hide.

One thing I carry in my pack is an extra set of reading glasses. I actually go to the local pharmacy and buy a set of cheaters for about $10. I think its better to have these than my prescription readers in case I break them. I have actually used these so I can read a proclamation or a license, etc. One question for you. What do you do to keep in shape for hunting? Could you do a video covering this?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 8 лет назад
+nmelkhunter1 - I am not a gym rat. I've tried the gym routine, but it doesn't work for me, physically or mentally. I've found nothing prepares me for the elk hunting hills than hiking the hills with a 20-30# pack, four or five hikes per week, 1.5 to 2 hours per hike. Old school, I know. As for readers, I don't yet need those, but it won't be long.
@nmelkhunter1
@nmelkhunter1 8 лет назад
+Randy Newberg, Hunter I think you are spot on with your work out. I split my time between a stair master and hiking for cardio for my hunts. I really think the hiking does the most good as long as one carries at least 30-40 pounds and finds decent grades to walk up and down. I do like to go to the gym to lift as well just so I can keep my upper body in shape. Take care and best of luck in the field.

Hi Randy, one thing I have never seen in any hunting equipment list is a meat cutter glove. A lot of guys wear surgical (latex type), but I will take a meat cutter glove every time. I would much rather protect against a cut, sever or not. These gloves are available on line for about $9.00 a pair. think about how many guys carry stuff to take care of a cut---why not carry a small glove to avoid the cut.

@Fresh_Tracks

Depends. I would say about half of it, maybe more. I have a local retailer, Sportsmans Warehouse who helps with all the FFL stuff for me and some groups I volunteer for, so if they have it in stock, I try to patronize their business and will buy from them.

@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
Do you download the maps to your phone? You don't need service if you download the maps to your phone. You can run it in airplane mode and the GPS part of your phone will still work. No service needed.

OruxMaps is a free download. GPS works with or without service. I actually put my phone on airplane mode and it lasts 3-4 days while constantly tracking me. You have to download the off line maps on you phone, but it offers full scale up close gps tracking and navigation on or offline. I'm on the East coast in the the mountains of NC, but we have infinitely thicker timber here...never dropped a gps , and it links up in seconds no matter how far out I am.

What's in the 1st Aid kit? Is there a list somewhere?
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 7 лет назад
No list. It is a kit I've put together. I actually have two of them; one a day kit and one a multi-day kit. I would suggest buying one of the pre-packaged kits. Thanks for watching.
@spatin51
@spatin51 7 лет назад
Thanks for your response. Most (or all) of the prepackaged kits are not very well thought out. I would like to get some ideas for such a multi-day kit from someone who has actually been there. Enjoy watching your videos. I'm learning a lot.
@tundrafunk7402

Sidney Patin REI's multi day med kits are very well thought out and packaged. They been updated recently and also have room to add extras to fill in for individual needs. Couple that with a trauma kit from Dark Angel Medical, and a SAM splint, and you're good to go. I like to sub in a RMT (Ratcheting Medical Tourniquet) for any other tourniquets. Recommendation from a retired P.J./Firefighter/EMT. No sense in messing with a windlass when second count.
@davidbuchanan9812

It’s always best to put your own medical kit together. Many prepackaged kits use inferior pieces to keep the cost down. Start with a quality bag. I have two kits: a small for short excursions and a large for longer trips.

Do you ever carry a handgun at all when you're in Grizzly country Randy?

I don't. I'm useless with a handgun, so it only serves as more weight to carry.

Hey Randy, I have been hunting and trying to promote minimalism hunting through my channel. In my channel I present a lot of the same gear, utilizing the same bag for every game season (the only thing that changes is the camo and the firearm) but I have been having luck with the least amount of gear. The stuff you include in your bag is along the same lines as what I carry. I enjoy watching your content while I am at the gym, I learn a lot. Do you have any suggestions on how to store your camo? IE (snow camo, spring turkey, and blaze orange)
@Fresh_Tracks
@Fresh_Tracks 5 лет назад
Thanks for watching. I wash it, then store in totes that have pine scent wafers in them. Not a scientific method, just the way I've always done it. Good luck this season.

In serious bear country I wouldn't go anywhere without it. If you can hoof it you can have it, but the spray weighs less than most spare mags and is probably more effective in the bulk of cases. I don't go hiking without something beyond the bear spray, but I think you'd be shocked by the efficacy of the chemicals. I'm not saying leave the gun at home, but I know special ops guys who... choose their words carefully... and they go nowhere without bear spray in Northern WY.
