Pritha, I must admit you made a wonderful video on Jamdani - rather I should say this is the best video so far I found on RU-vid on Jamdani Fake Vs Real - indeed so helpful dear.
I took a jamdani saree yesterday...and after ur video recognized that we bought a fake saree😔...thanks for video... atleast onwardwe can recognize the original saree
Thank you! Original dhakai jamdani will be upwards of Rs 10,000. Unfortunately, even paying good money does not guarantee authenticity so I'll advice to always check for yourself. Also, if you're after dhakai jamdani in particular, buy them from Bangladesh. I recommend Aarong.
Hi Pritha, Thank you so much for this educational video. Could you please recommend a place (shop in Kolkata or online) to buy an authentic dhakai jamdani saree?
Hi Riya. Most shops in Kolkata sell jamdani sarees manufactured in Bengal. Those are not technically Dhakai Jamdani as they do not come from G.I. tagged area. If you want authentic Dhakai, look out for exhibitions organised by Bangladesh deputy High commissioner in Kolkata. They usually organise a Bangladesh fair in winter. There will be dhakai stalls in international trade fair though this year probably nothing will happen. If you are not in a hurry I'll recommend one of these two. Or you can purchase from Bangladesh's most famous garment shop Aarong. Aarong.com, I think they deliver to India. Many of my dhakais are in fact from Aarong though bought from Bangladesh. If you want a jamdani saree without fussing about the place of origin you can try Vastra Kuttimm in Ekdalia. Whatever you choose to do please make sure you're purchasing authentic handloom by either examining the saree yourself or asking online seller to show you the reverse side of the saree. Unfortunately many shopkeepers have a habit of lying about their products. Hope this helps 🙂
Hi miss Wonderful video. I love jamdani sarees. I am from south India living in U.S. unfortunately, we don't find these sarees in south. I checked Aaron's website but did not find any I liked. Also, are all these cotton or do they have some silk?? My friends and I want to get a few jamdani. Can you recommend any weavers in Bengal or Bangladesh? Or, can you recommend a reputable shop in Calcutta??
Hello. Thank you for watching this. Bangladesh jamdanis are traditionally cotton though nowadays cotton-silk combination are available more as they last longer. Aarong website may have limited collection and you can try emailing/texting them. They have the best dhakai jamdanis. For jamdanis from West Bengal you can contact Biren Basak +919609103106. Please note, WB jamdani look slightly different from BD ones. Both are equally good though
Thank you so much for responding! I will contact them. If I am not successful, as aggressive as it maybe on my part, I will have to send you money and beg you to purchase a couple for me and mail them here. I love your collection. I have been admiring their understated elegance for the longest time. Thank you my dear!!
Hi Pritha, I really loved the video inspired me to buy a jamdani saree. The black saree in the video is awesome. Loved it. Can you share the source for the dhakai Jamdani.
I am also a passionate lover of handloom sarees however most of the people cannot afford handloom sarees who end up purchasing cheam powerloom ones. Who can afford handlooms should go for it.
