man this makes me want to be able to drive even more! I am 14 and have a little less than a year to get my permit. once I get my license I want to do this stuff all the time.
Wow that's makes me really thankful to be here... Here in Virginia it is 15 and 6 months for perment and 16 and 3 months for your licence... It will be here befor I know it I turn 15 on Christmas :)
Excellent video. You tell us what to look for in the USA and the UK too. There is a lot of old British items over here and your knowledge is invaluable. I subscribed to your videos.
Good video, I liked it, solid information. I found some old silverware left in a box beside the dumpster at my place. Digging through most of the pieces are stainless, with a few of the pieces being silver plated. The one piece that got my attention was a big soup ladle. Has a dull silver colour, and very heavy. Checking the weight it is just over 202 + grams, and measures 13 inches long. Has a nice ping sound when you drop a coin on the handle. The puzzling thing is it has 2 makers marks on it. One of the makers marks in a rectangle is R.F. The best I could find on this mark was Richard Ferris of Exeter 1784-1812. The other maker mark is 100 in a rectangle. It is this mark that I am having trouble to track down it's meaning. I don't know if it relates to the amount of silver in the ladle or if it's a year mark. I thought you might have some knowledge of the 100 mark and my be able enlighten me on it's meaning. If not maybe you would know of someone who could help me with this. I have a blog about this ladle with video, comment back if your interested in a link to the blog.
wow thanks for that - i only started my little stack about 2 weeks ago, and thought about raiding the op shops for spoons etc - but didnt know what to look for - so I'm chuffed mate thanks again from Australia :-)))
Some silver has a nickel coating or nickel alloyed in it😊so some silver can have a slight magnetic pull to it very subtle plus anything thats marked epns means electroplated nickel silver😊
Thanks for the tips! I have always used the ping test..If you have a decent ear for the frequency of silver it's night and day... May you find a painted silver box that weighs 50 lbs and the lid is solid gold : )
Today I went to my first estate sale and found Chippendale sterling 1.2 Troy ounce soup spoons I got them for 15 a piece thinking I would melt them down not thinking about there value as flat wear it turns out the are worth almost 25 to 30 dollars in silver but as a spoon 60 to 70! :) I would have gotten more If I had more money.
I subscribed to your channel because I am just really getting started to find silver ! I am a prospector for gold but it is so hard to come bu in SC. Thanks for all the helpful Tips! I just started metal detecting too! Need tips on that too! Keep up the fine videos!!!!!!
Sorry but I don't have any British coins. They are pretty rare in my area which is almost in the middle of the USA. I did have one large canadian penny. It disappeared many years ago. If I ever come across one that looks old I'll try to remember to let you know. I say try because I am in my 60's and tend to forget things LOL. Oh the brit things I was talking about is silver ware and collectibles. Sorry about not being specific.
Yer all the flat ware is solid silver.I'm not sure mof the maker I'll have a look? I'll do another video about cutery soon. About the 40% silver the make up and scratch test should work but not the ping test, its mostly knowing about coins or guess work. Basically if its cheap, get it.
the PING TEST is ok, but works mainly for coins here's another: the HEAT CONDUCTING TEST -have a lighter with you. grab the item between your index finger and thumb, start applying heat an inch away from where you are holding it. now, depending on the thickness, you should feel the heat coming towards you rather fast - which true only for SOLID silver items. the rest would be either plated or just fake. keep in mind that NO OTHER METAL conducts heat as good as silver!
Sometimes there is copper which is silver plated. This does not attract to a magnet. So how do u differentiate between silver and other(non magnetic) metals?
I look take them to the london jewellery quarter and walk around and find the best price for silver. NEVER use a cash for gold place that you have to post the item to. Just shop around and ask the price per gram not penny weight .
They had hundreds of pieces plus a whole set of pitchers and plates from the army 1800's I think it was almost 10 pieces for 7,500 but I am not positive.... If anything is left tomorrow is 50 percent off but all the good stuff is probably gone
So what do you do with the broken silver pieces of jewelry and everything else? Do you send it away to a silver recycle place and get cash value from it? So many of those seem scammy to me that I wouldn't even know which one to send my silver to.
I went to a car boot in Gravely near Baldock if you know where that is and bought a solid silver fork and spoon for £1.50... They weigh 185 grams together... :D There is just one weird thing with the spoon... It has two duty marks on the back... One is a mans head is a circle and one is a rectangle... Then there is the makers mark which I couldn't find anything on... :(
Really nice video. What do you think of coin silver flatware from 18-19th century? It's 90% silver - right? Is that a good investment if come across it cheap? Thanks!
Buy silver while it is dirt cheap. $200.00 An oz is probable with the utter dilution of the dollar. All paper currency fade away without an asset to back it up. The US gov used to be a safe haven but all bets are off since silver was removed from our coinage in 1964. God bless all..
I'll regret my entire life for selling a real silver plate for a few bucks when I was a kid just to get some extra cash... When my mom discovered me and told me that it was real silver and that it was a present from his dad I really wanted to die. I wish I knew all this information back then :(
and btw, in wich form would you reccomend i start looking for silver, which is the most reliable ? Im referring to silver coins, or silver objects to melt? i saw a video of a guy who was buying silver dimes as an investment for when the dollar value will decrease and silver value would increase, but would that include any kind of silver coin, from any country, it just needs to be silver at the end? doesnt matter in what form and shape?
Like those tongs in the background at the end. Silver? Manufactured by, can you share some close ups of your silverware that is fake and that is silver with stills please? Since you have tested your items I would like to see which ones are fake and which ones are silver. I have a question about the items that are 37% silver like the 1942-45 nickel or the 40% half dollars, do they ping, make up, or scratch test the same way? Thanks for making an informative channel.
HI I HAVE THREE PIECES OF1847 ROGERS BROOS. IT HAS A MARK I S ON IT . IT AIISO HAS A NAME ON IT - HERITAGE . DO YOU KNOW ANY THING ABOUT THEM ?thank you
can someone tell me if i melt random shaped object of silver into bullions, what do i have to do to make it good for sale, like i need to hallmark them, and where could i sell these? i want to invest into silver, some advices?
it depends on the maker and age as antique pieces or great makers will be worth more in the original form the same for very popular designs like the king's pattern
I would like to know if anyone has ever seen just a plain small diamond hallmark. I have two small butterknives that don't seem to be magnetic that have these tiny marks on the side of the handle. Any ideas. I have spent hours online and have come up with nothing!
I did this video back in 2011 and the price was right up at that back then, at the time I was dealing with a scrap dealer in the London jewellery quarter.
Back when I recorded this video when I was buying and selling gold and silver (I'm not these days) I use to sell the good bits on ebay and shopped around for the best scrap price to sell the rest.
