I brought a Honda Hornet 900 ( travelled with that ) from Hungary to here, well, in 2008. I used the bike regularly in Hungary. When i brought here, i used that for about 8 month, then could not use due to it's MOT expired. Kept in a garage, hasn't used at all. All papers withdrawn in Hungary in 2010 ( still payed everything for that, despite i haven't used the bike), so that's why i decided to withdraw by the local DVLA. In about 1.5 years ago i decided to put the in road, or sell. For this i tried to get a registration. So far it has been rejected 6 times!!! Original dating paper was the main issue ( which i payed for to Honda UK, well, twice, since that cannot be over 6 month old). Then the MOT was the issue ( had to take for MOT on trailer, but again, that was expired after a year). Then the increased fee was the problem ( 91 to 93 gbp). Then the expired postal order was the problem. DVLA is not helpful at all! On phone? Just music, no one picks the phone up. Online chat? Just some woman tried to 'help', but could not really do anything apart from repeating herself about the same thing. I'm very, very disappointed!!! Recently i managed to get an electronic copy of the original documents from Hungary... So dunno if they will be good for them, also the official paper about the withdrawal. I got a brilliant Hornet 900 in my garage, and seems like it is impossible to put onto the road due to them useless bunch of useless, unhelpful pricks works for DVLA. 😔😔😔

Great information on "how to register an imported bike" but i was hoping for information on how to actually import a bike like the title suggests, it is a great and informative video and judging by the lack of answers to later questions i guess the OP is AWOL, id really like to ask him how he imported the bike and how much it cost him, did he use an import agency or did he import in himself.

Does this work if I only import a new frame and build the bike with parts from the UK or does it have to be an entire bike? Also does the engine number have to match the frame number?

Hi Jim, quick question I can’t seem to find answers to. Maybe you can help as your video did thanks. I’m registering for the first time an off road trike 1985 Honda big red. Mot people seem to be fine with all and I’m filling out my v55/5. I put enduro as the type approval. My seat height and ground clearance aren’t within the measurements I have come across. If I go ahead as is with the form do you think it will pass and that’s it or will my trike get a test to see if it is an enduro? Thanks in advance if anyone has any idea?

Very good video, do you know if now with BREXIT, same rules apply importing a motorbike from Spain? In this case the bike is registrated on my name there so I think it won´t be so difficult.

What I found was that it was cheaper to rent a van for the day and transport the bike to the MOT location. Some insurance companies will try to rip you off.

I am just buying a xs650 from a guy in Britain , he has built the bike from parts. Now the question is this, he has pointed out the engine has no vin number on it, he says this is normal for imported engine's from the USA , so i just have no idea if this is true, as it seems to me a engine should have a number ?

I know this video is 6 yrs old but we're having the exact same issue now with our 2 imported bikes from the US where they've sent back our paperwork claiming we have to get an IVA after we've already passed our MOT's for both bikes already. My question is, how did you get insurance just off the VIN and who with bc Bennett's won't w/o a UK registration/plate number so what insurance company did you use? Hi I imported a vehicle from Japan it was under 10yrs old so I did a IVA test and send it off to dvla it got rejected they said the certificate of comfirmity shows vehicle is not suitable for UK roads

BTW that letter (A Year of Manufacture letter) is useful when you don't have original US log book (as me), otherwise you may get Q plates or nothing...thats what i've been told. You can now just download the V55/5 form, print and fill it out. DVLA will accept it.

Hello, Great video. Just one question, you said you drove the bike to get an mot. In the Gov.UK site it says I need to get a MSVA APPROVAL to get a Ministers Approval Certificate. Did you have to do this?

I am currently going through this process. I received my DVLA application rejection yesterday. Having contacted KTM / Husqvarna they cannot supply a EU CoC for the bike as it was designed for the US market. This is turning out to be a very difficult process. The DVLA advice was to look at www.gov.uk/vehicle-approval/motorcycle-single-vehicle-approval . My advice is just buy the bike in the UK if you intend to ride it in the UK, so far this has cost over £2000 for shipping, import tax, VAT etc.... on a $5000 enduro bike.

How did you get a MOT CERT before you got a registration ?

DVLA have just rejected my application. They want the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) for my bike. I would recommend getting this before applying. I have had to contact KTM UK with the VIN in order to obtain the CoC.

I have a bike here in Canada and intend to bring it back to uk next year. My question is how to get it to the mot centre without a registration plate. Did you use a trailer?

Very explanatory but why are you telling us to ignore sections 49, 50 and 51 when this is the very information (on my form anyway) that contains relevant information namely 49: Name and address of vehicle keeper, 50: Date of birth 51: Type approval exemption. Sections 52, 53 and 54 refer to rigid goods vehicles.

Tax exemption has moved forward i think it's pre 1977 are will continue to roll on yearly from now on
