I spent a few days doing my research on how to import a car from US into Canada, but this video distills all the steps in a short 13 minute clip. Absolutely amazing! Great job and thanks for sharing this with us!
Hahah. I know right? CBSA should really just have a link to this video 😂 As for insurance, I think you could take the same bill of sale info to insurer (ICBC in BC) prior to getting it at border and they will sell you a 1-day insurance for like 47$. Or just tow it with own vehicle.
For anyone facing a title predicament, you can register any older vehicle in Vermont by sending in some paperwork to the Vermont DMV. As long as the vehicle is not stolen, VT will send you tags and a registration in the mail, which you can then get transferred to a title in the state you live in.
@aljanat5 I guess that is why there is a Liberal government in Ottawa that has Canada BILLIONS OF DOLLARS in debt---too many idiots like you that don't care how high the taxes go. Why does he need to get elected? There are political parties that advocate for controlled spending, not wanting more taxes and higher taxes at every turn.
It's funny you say you won't buy there anymore. Last week I was gassing up my 02' F250 Super Crew when the guy on the other side of the isle asked if I'd like to sell the truck. He said he was from close to Toronto and has a 4wd he uses for winter, but wants a nice solid truck for summertime.. I immediately thought of you and told him so. He said he watches your channel as well!!! lol.. I didn't sell him the truck, but honestly, I think when the time comes, I am going to advertise it in the Northern States and around Toronto.
@@thomasbarlow4223 Your paying the enviro fee for when the day comes that it will be disposed of. It is charged on any vehicle new or used coming into the country. All new car dealers pass the fee on. Of course on a used vehicle bought within Canada it has already been paid when it was first purchased.
I needed to ship a car across the us, same thing. Truck ready need more money. Instead my brother drove it for me. I dealt with 8 different shippers. Never again. I drive a semi. Do not let them screw you. He had a fantastic drive as well. That is because we planned around weather or u might double your length of trip. Great info.
The shipping company raising the price is normal operating procedures, my cousin worked for a moving broker and he said they would call every time before the move and raise the price and the shipper they hired would show up and raise the price even more and pocket the price that was paid over the quote they got on the phone, he worked for 3 different brokers and they all operated the same.
Just a Tip, If you are having trouble getting the title you can file/register for a lost title in a diffrefent state and if you chose a state without vehicle inspections it can all be done through the mail. The DMV of that state will send you a title and plates, but you why have to pay taxes. I know you can use an address form a separate state but I don't know about a separate country. Vermont is a good state for this if I remember correctly.
Nothing better than a Deboss garage video late at night to finish off the high school homework Life just got way better I’m no longer mad about my geometry
If Deboss leaves Cail at 9 Am, travels for 200 miles at a time between stops, the truck weighs 9600 lbs, and has a co-efficient friction loss of 12%, what kind of coffee does he need to drink?
@@DEBOSSGARAGE 50% coffee (Tim's or McD) 50% Crown Royal Rye Whiskey. Climb in passenger seat, instruct buddy, wife, or girlfriend to get behind the wheel and we're off. Percentages of booze may vary.
You’d never find a OBS crew cab in Canada that’s not rusted out or beat to hell. The loggers on the West Coast bought thousands of 350 crew cabs the ones that spent most of their life in the bush are rust free but hammered to death.
If you need anything hauled in the Midwest area let me know I got a truck and trailer and would happily haul something to the boarder for you. Your channel is awesome and so informative!!! I’m also building a 2nd gen dodge to fit an 8.3 Cummins with an 10 speed
I wish I had known about you wanting this year truck. I got rid of mine because I couldn't get in anymore. I got crippled in 2005 and just went downhill till they said no more Morgan, you are hurting yourself when the body is in the extended mode. Let me clarify. Mine born in Oct., 94 and my brother who passed in April had the same trucks year and size wise, mine crew and his a standard cab, both had real easy start run diesels, both five speeds, both clean and free of rust, mine zero body damage...zero, did have a crack in the windshield on passenger side about six or about long and the crome not dinged. Mine was a dually and his SWD, his had a ding a curl in the bedside near rear wheel opening that could if strong enough pull back to shape and the bed was perfect cause he did ruin the original and we took the one off my two wheel drive ninety modal. He put the strap on my good bed and lifted it bending that right side but you had to look for it. Mine had the steel bed factory, with goose neck and the other heavy hitch all in factory wiring for different plugs... not sure about pin count, I believe seven but the electric brakes worked great. I did have aftermarket radio and his did too but I had the factory one to go with. So last year my brother trying to get mine cause I didn't drive wanted to trade but I held out.. that will cause friction. Long story short, he passed away in April seventh this year and his wife sold it for eight hundred dollars. Mine when he passed to me a reminder of him and I missed him so when friend Amon come by to chat, he asked me what I wanted for it. He tames the kind of care of his like me. He said the only thing wrong with mine was the wheel covers. I told him they were steel chromed wheels and when he looked said, Dang, their perfect so I thought they were covers. Mine could of used new tires as mine were getting small c racks in them from not being drove. He asked me at the right time, and he trades me a ford explorer of same year in very nice looking condition. I see the rust coming through the wheel arches and kinda pissed cause I never took the pick to his and mine a magnet would stay on it anywhere except the aluminum boxes on the sides that were tool boxes. If I had known that you wanted them I could of worked with you cause I just wanted a good home for mine and my brother before he passed ask me if I wanted his causes he knew he was dying. He had a brain tumor and it was quick but I wouldn't want to be in those shoes. Five thousand would of got you two trucks that could be drove from Alaska to back east Canada. A few months late and a chance to meet you maybe.
Flash, Flash, hundred yard dash. My favorite part of that movie. I know a guy used to work in a auto parts store, used a stapler just like that. Cracked me up every time. Cllliiiiicckkkk k.
Bullseye Shipping. I shipped with them on the way out to Cali from Buffalo (big ass old Fairlane too), and my cousin just had two vehicles, an old F100 and a Corvette shipped back to Buffalo from Cali late last year. Fantastic experience both times.
Get that truck oil sprayed if you plan on using it year round! Friend's got his grandfathers 95 F150 with next to no rust thanks to krown oil spray. For the cost its definitely worth it
Something you should know and other Canadians should know is there is 50 different Titles in the USA and it's best to look online at the different titles by state.
Just did this with an International 4300 Dump. Couldn't understand the gov-jargon related to ITN/SED so paid a broker few hundred to handle all the paperwork and border clearance which was nice as they gave me a nice sheet for my driver to give border to handle it all plus I could prepay taxes that way so didn't have to be present when it crossed. As per transport over border, drove it over with a NC state temp tag and border officer was fine with it but promptly got a warning from Ontario's finest that that wasn't exactly fine with them. Drove it right to the shop for safety/etest and had them dealer plate it to get the RIV inspection.
@Henry Was a warning not a ticket so coulda been worse. Technically should have Ontario temps to drive in Ontario, problem is can't get those without an Ontario title. Usually not a problem with passenger cars and trucks you can toss on a trailer and drag to the shop to get the process done. But for med/heavy stuff it's not cost effective to bring out the float trailer or pay the big wrecker to come out and move it.
Good to know. I remember faxing my paperwork in it was slow and painful. I think I am going to start looking for southern cars again. The trips are a blast.
I had my truck shipped from Santa Barbra Cali to northern Maine for 900 bucks, it's way easier through a dealership too. Plus younger than a set amount of years, ithink 15 years , all recalls must be done.
Forgot to ad this you did use a broker "virtual on line" . Any US citizen can act as a broker. (Seller). As long as they have a EIN #. AND Vehicles 15 years and older no restriction. Newer than that need another fee and permit. PLUS there are vehicles that are banned from Canada. Hope this helps anyone watching your video. I spoke with simplified trade solutions $35 and they send ITN and export document to your border point . they also have links to all border entry points with phone# and email address. Some border points do not process exports as well. PARTS. Used parts 25 years and older US don't care. CAnada make sure parts are cleaned off , BILL of SALE ,hand written OK but make price realistic. Don't think you can fool the Canadians with price you paid. You would be amazed at what access they have to information. They will seize and impound or on the spot fine of up to 10 times the tax you are trying to avoid!
Subscribed, if you buy a car or truck intended for sale in California or New York it would have stricter emissions standards then a car sold in Chicago Illinois. The catalytic converters on cars in Cali and New York are generally CARB certified for that state. I work with some guys who live south of Chicago in a different county and they are completely emissions exempt to my shock
Regarding Ontario they wont give you an Ontario 10 day permit for it until after its been imported, so you'll have to find a way to get it back legally, not all states will issue a permit to Canadians, and some will even want sales tax on it.
I never had any problem bring a car from Canada to the USA, My folks live in Canada and and My dad gave me his old truck. He mailed me the title and I went to the DMV registered it and got plates. Hitched a ride up to Canada with family, threw my plates on the truck and drove it home. Another time my dad drove down and sold his car and I drove him back. Not sure about its legality but never had a problem.
I used Fidelity Auto Shipping. They stick to the price of 4k. There will be paperwork problems and they will work with you until it is in your name. They act as your agent. I was very happy with them and would use them again. They brought me a 2001 Dodge 3500 Cummins from Florida. Absolutely rust free. It needed a front end. I bought it from Bigboyrides in Miami without seeing the truck in person. I too will never buy a Canuk rust bucket again. Oil spray the truck when you get it and every year after. Get them to drill and spray the insides of the doors and cab.
i remember when doing business with Canada was easy, then NAFTA hit, followed a few years later by 911. Hopefully things are getting better now. I enjoyed Canada and their sense of humor.
I gave my brother my Acura TL 2014 last year; I bought the car with a loan from Acura (0.1% for 5 years!). Unfortunately Honda America never transferred the car to me so it was a headache getting the title transferred to him. Ultimately he drove the car from Tennessee to Montreal and managed to get it into Canada with an emailed photo of the title (which I eventually got). Quite an ordeal
You discovered our secret! If you want rust-free then go to the desert. Southern Nevada, southern Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico are also good. The emission inspection rules are by state as well as by county or even city. Most states don't require the emissions for title, just for registration.
In Washington State the department of licensing is VERY picky about titles. As a buyer here, don't mess with a vehicle unless the seller's name and address are on the title, and they have the title in hand. I bought a vehicle a few years ago and the seller messed up the date when he signed it. Both the seller and I had to go to a notary to get a second document notarized regarding the error on the title. It's pure nonsense.
Not first. ..........🤤 Uhhmmm so what Glad to know all this info , if ever need to ship a vehicle to Canaadea,,, Thanks for posting Can't wait to see the build ! !
It’s also important to ensure it’s a CLEAN title. Most states allow you to have a vehicle that has been in an accident re registered as ok after an accident where the insurance has paid out a claim. They inspect it and ok it for the road, in California that vehicles title will say salvaged. It can still be driven and insured on the hiway after getting a n inspection, but the title will say salvaged. It’s my understanding you cannot import these. Smog is another California specific hazard. If it’s the right car it might be worth importing it to another state ( like Nevada) having it inspected there and registered as a clean title, then import it into Canada. I’ve imported two vehicles as well. It’s a hassle and not that hard. Thanks DeBoss Garage for putting this video out there. Curious how you found the DMV vs the Govt service in Ontario?
The guy on your ad at KT Nine/ Nine Fam, looks just like Stephan right down to his pony tail. and guess what I watched the whole ad. Okay so I live in the states so I don't think I want to import from Canada to here. Doesn't look like the tax was that much. Good stuff thanks for the info and update. Happy Motoring.
Thank you for not using one of those terrible shipping companies. I have seen so many youtube horror stories of those cheap shipping companies I for sure know that you either need to drive it yourself (the easier way) or pay for a high quality shipper or else you will have a bad time. Also congrats on the truck. This is the last generation Ford pickup before they started getting really plasticy and ugly and so aggressive looking and those stupid skirts that go all the way to the ground for some reason? I guess because people use them more like passenger cars than trucks so they want the better airflow for the highways? Either way I think the generations newer than this one are so ugly, this is the last good one.
The smog inspection to get a title issued is a pain in the ass.I live in Komifornia.I bought a car with a blown clutch .I did not want to fix it right away but I wanted a title issued in my name.I had to wait until I fixed the car then they fined me for not doing the transfer within 15 days of buying it.I just wanted the title issued with a non op.
living in north Dakota i see classic cars for sale in near by Saskatchewan. i haul freight across the border both ways but my consumers handle the customs paperwork. so iv always kinda wondered how much of a pain it would be to buy a vehicle from across the border. i know they handle things differently north bound vrs south bound but i still found this video interesting.
Honestly, just ask around places where local "car people" hang out and the various government bodies that you would have to deal with. At least in Canada, Border Services, etc, would rather help you than nail you for mistakes. They aren't fast about it, but they are the ones that know definitively what they're talking about.
Damnit Rich I live in Indiana I don’t care how to get a truck up to the great white nort ay! I just wanna see that Cat/Allison shoved in her front end!!! Just jokin damn good vijeo that I’m sure will come in handy for y’all Canadians. Can’t wait for more.
Very helpful video, thanks! What if you aren't buying a car but just importing one that you already own? My husband (U.S citizen) has moved to Canada (permanent resident) and now has to import his car. When filling out the form to get the ITN# (in Ontario they are calling it an AES filing), would my husband be the importer and the exporter??
@@DEBOSSGARAGE Thanks for the response. So, can we use our Canadian address in both fields as well? He is using a family member's (U.S) address for some mail still but it is not his residence.
I was paying attention to everything Rich was saying I really was and I appreciate the info just one question 🤔are those two fresh motors next to the left side of the truck. A new project? I enjoy the content you produce thanks 👍🏻
Shipping is expensive.. I had priced getting a truck from overseas. It was $2000 from Gibraltar to Toronto or somewhere there...cost less to cross the ocean then cross the country.. I was quoted like $2500 Calgary Alberta to sudbury Ontario...
Idk why I'm watching this as an American but just fyi some states titles don't have the top section to fill out like California does some just have a section to fill out on the back like in Wisconsin or Oklahoma for example.
In Australia I import f trucks to Australia , the $7000 -$10000 less wholesale price new from corruption, add shipping , custom fees , rhd conversion, car taxes = f250 $150000 in Australia , I'm lucky to make $5000 profit on a f250 xlt Td 4x4
I love the shot of the puff of smoke out the exhaust when you talk about all the "extra equipment" for emissions because it came from California. For those of you not from the People's Republic (I just escaped over the wall myself), in spite of the strict emissions laws, California still has the worst air quality in the Union. All that special emissions equipment amounts to exactly nothing, except a lot of hassle and expense, which includes taxes for people who own older vehicles (basically it's a tax on the poor since vehicles under 5 years old aren't smog checked so rich people who drive brand new cars are exempt). Lots of subsidies built in for OEM's and aftermarket parts suppliers too. The big boys do really well and all the small players are shoved out due to the legal barriers to entry, and you guessed it, parts are often 2-3 times as expensive as the other states, especially emissions parts.
What kind of permit do you get when you cross into canada. I'm trying ask how do I insure the car from the border to the workshop. Do I get a temporary sticker ?
Thank you for this video, I was going to hire a truck and trailer to go get the car for me, But maybe 2 people can drive to the US and just drive the 2 cars back. But don't I need to have Ontario plates on the new car and temporary insurance ? Thanks again.
👌, all in one short explanation. Only question I had about the vehicle, it looks lifted or has bigger than original tires. Would that be classed as modified? Rules state that a vehicle cannot be changed from factory spec.
Thanks for sharing this video . Now that you know it's just that easy to import a vehicle from the U.S.A ...sell me your white Ford crewcab ( cheap lol ) & go back down there and get yourself another truck haha
