We do hope to make a new video that focuses on repatriation of the Benin plaques. This earlier video was focused instead on the importance of the work.

@@smarthistory-art-history TY. Those treasures are exquisite. Hopefully repatriation of them will open dialogue that supports the aptitude, ownership, and self-determination of those people. They have a right to the dissemination of their own culture. TY for showing the video and sharing the information.

This is fascinating. All these plaques should be together in one place - Nigeria! So that they could be reconstituted into a museum. This is such an informative short video. Thanks for making it.

Though Benin Republic formally called Dahomey came to the Benin Kingdom in 1975 to seek permission from the OBA(king) to change it's name from Dahomey to Benin in honour of their ancestors who they said came from the Benin Kingdom in Nigeria hence the name change from Dahomey to Benin Republic.

These plaques are pages of the history books, if you will, of the Benin empire. Very similar to way the ancient Egyptians use to write their history. We hsve not even begun to appreciate the value of these plaques. These plaques are better in their natural environment: Nigeria where they can be appriciated not only as beautiful master pieces but also for their historical and anthropological value.

The saddest part about the Kingdom of Benin is that they refused to engage in the selling of slaves. Yet centuries later many of the citizens of Benin were hauled off to the Americas as slaves.
@mch7933
@mch7933 5 лет назад
actually, Benin citizens do not make up a significant amount of africans enslaved in the americas. Igbo and Yoruba are the major groups from Nigeria that have descendants in the Americas. Benin did well to defend itself
@visionquest7870
@visionquest7870 5 лет назад
@@mch7933 "The Americas" includes more than the USA. It includes North, Central and South America, which also encompasses the Caribbean. Second of all most, the overwhelming number of Nigerians, were taken to the Caribbean and South America, because the Spanish and Portuguese tried to avoid people from the Sahel (Mandigos) due to their history with Muslims. So many Mande people were taken to the USA.

@@paulphilip257 they adopted the name from the 'bight of benin' and they wouldn't have changed the name from Dahomey to anything Yoruba because the purpose of the name change was to reflect something that was not specific to any of the ethnicities within the country...and yorubas are the second largest ethnicity after the Fon (who founded Dahomey)

The next major slice of my DNA pie is from Begin and Togo, so I'm immediately intrigued again. I'm also on the market for ways to impress adorkable curly-haired art nerds with infectious smiles, so even more intrigued by the title. 😌 I'm reminded of relief sculptures from the ancient playlist, so it's nice to see this again. Doing the hand-torso movement was a bit of fun - definitely not natural. I'm reminded of my free-weight workouts and holding my arms in a similar fashion to work muscles. Maybe the artist had that in mind too - a power move. I've actually seen a restaurant in Key West where money is wrapped all over the walls. I forget the story, but it wasn't the prettiest place, lol. All told, I don't think I'll be investing in any mudfish, but I can appreciate the splendor suggested by this piece in its time.

The coral did not walk from Olokun, the Edo/ Binis were hard working people that strongly believed Divine Lord God, they were farmers, traders& also engaged in doing positive things that yield money. The empire very rich and one the then Obas who was a Priest before he became Oba cultivated the Coral beads from Olokun( middle) the sea, not just coral beads but also white pearls.

I am IMMENSELY HAPPY that I hv found this information as it it DEEP, especially when they separate parent 1 and parent 2‼️It adds up to some stories I was told growing up. I am contemplating how I will return to Nigeria and Benin ASAP‼️We hv information that one of our Ancestors is from The Ebo Tribe, at least that is what the paper said. My daughters father amazingly has the same Ancestry, I hv found so many people that share my DNA, even 1 of my best friends turned out to be a distant cousin, and one of my professional acquaintance, we were close in that capacity, turned out as a distant cousin as well. OK, I will stop😂😂😂😂But I AM GRATEFUL
