Hey, I love your video's! Maybe I get a bit old, but the background music is a bit loud I have the idea. It makes it more difficult to understand what you are saying. Is it an idea to balance that a bit more? If I am the only one who experience that problem, just forget what I said ;)

This video is so helpful. Thank you so much for putting it up. I'm riding a young horse now and the only thing he's doing is running away and be very hectic. So the contact was always very tight and rarely loose. I didn't really know what to do. After seeing your video I have a better idea of what I want the horse to do. It's also my first time to train such a young horse. So I will keep all of your ideas in my mind while training him next time. And try to focus on one thing at a time. Please do more videos on young horses especially maybe when breaking them for the first time. Thank you so much! You both are amazing!!

I have only just discovered this channel, but I am thoroughly enjoying the explanations. It's lovely to see the softness in the way you ride. I am working with a mare for a pupil who has a tendency to lean on the left contact only until she is properly through. I have been pushing her with my left leg to encourage her more into my right hand, whilst concentrating on staying soft in my left hand as a correction. Would this be how you would fix a horse that was unlevel in the hand?

Iam going to do this to my mare, thank you so much Tommie. I also have a question when a horse have a strong mouth on one side how to teach them to be softer on that spesific side? She is also more nervous whenever we do the usual trot and canter on the track left (her right mouth is so strong caused her body to go inside the arena but her neck to the outside arena) :(

I have an Arabian who I have been training since he was 7. He was very spooky and out of control in the beginning but now he is coming along and he is just now learning to accept the contact. But he continues to come above the bit if something gets his attention so I do lots of shoulder in and circles to keep his attention on his work. I'm showing him in training and first level with scores in the mid to upper 60's. Would like to develop more lightness in the front so he can lift more and take more weight on the hind end. Do you have any suggestions for a horse that doesn't have natural self carriage. Should I do more trot to walk to trot transitions if so how many steps ect. I am trying to develop his medium trot which requires self carriage. Also do you do or view videos of other people's horses with problems,? Then make suggestions for them?
@alexp.4764

Another great video:-)what to do with a horse that is lazy and doesn't push from behind and doesn't want to be soft especially on the right rain? It's almost mission impossible to ride on two reins as the horse gets really crooked. Moreover, it's a mare...so she is very stubborn and huge 175cm.
@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 2 года назад
Well most of the time when a horse doesn’t get soft in the connection the hindlegs are not active enough or the horse runs away from it ….. so I would say don’t mind the front focus on foreward 😎
@brendaoenema6889
@brendaoenema6889 2 года назад
Question, in your video you suggest if the horse does not take contact to stand stil and try to restore the contact by tacking a little contact with both hands and wait untill she softens. Do I understand your explenation correct? My horse puts her neck in between and it takes ages for her to soften. When she does, I immediate release and apprase her with my voice. Do I keep going on doing this until she accepts the contact immidiatly or is there a nother way for me to make her understand what I want her to do? By the way, she has a great contact in her canter. Walk and trot are her lowspots. I do a lot of transitions to make these gates and contact better.
@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 2 года назад
It’s difficult for me to say without seeing it. When the horse don’t take contact It’s most of the time because the hind legs are not active enough that’s mabe the case with you in canter it’s more active🤷🏻‍♂️ I also like to do some leg yielding in circles to have a better connection I’ll explain in a video soon! 😎
@angelawolgast2960
@angelawolgast2960 Год назад
You both are such a beautiful team. Explanations are correct, but if you'll continue riding with a back like concrete, the horse might come behind the vertical and " behind the aids" so to say. That hasn't got any to do with lightness. There already is a slightly rythm problem in the walk. The horse will stiffen it's upper line, and in the end, you won't get an adorable collection, because the horse isn't abel to lower it's hindquarter.

@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 3 года назад
@davidcarter3049
@davidcarter3049 2 года назад
Really good video..one of the problems with asking for more impulsion is the danger of losing the flexion at the poll and getting behind the bit as the contact becomes firmer..you ride really sensitively and with real empathy but at times still have this problem..so my thought is about muscular development ie strengthening the neck muscles so they are less flexible. I watched a weight training video about human squats, and the expert talked about how important it was not to be flexible in the lower back for strength training..carrying a heavy weight in a squat requires the lower back to be really solid so it doesn’t flex..in a way, asking for a stronger contact with the reins for more impulsion is something similar, particularly when these horses are beautifully supple. I guess my question is what exercises can be done to strengthen the neck muscles so that they are strong enough to resist the rein as more impulsion is asked for?
@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 2 года назад
Good question. Well I think that the horses neck is like the cats tail. So the neck helps the horse to be in balance. This is also I think why it’s so difficult the have and keep the right position of it. What I like to do when asking for more activity behind is doing that on a circle wile doing a little bit leg yield. And also if you lose the balance always go back. So I don’t ask voor more impulsion with taking more contact. The idea is that you ask more activity in the hind legs so the horse can go trough the back in the right contact with the riders hand. It’s difficult to explain here in this writing haha so I might make a video about how we can add more engery without getting a tensed contact. Good one! Thanks for your comment 🤠

@Linda.0708 Год назад

Hello! This is a very nice video, thank you so much!!! Very clear and efficient. But, I have one question though :) You are explaining the contact after you did warm up and did transition already. Yet, while doing the warm up you need some how to have a contact. Surely in a different way, as the stage of the scale of training is different. So you face different issues in early stages with the contact. What do you do then? Do we apply the same principles? I guess yes but the horse will not respond as after the warm up. Thank you so much!!

How do u face different situations in warm up for contact as you well explained here :) Hope my question is clear now otherwise drop it :) :) I like very much what you say always!! Thank you so much for those precious tips!!! I am riding since quite some time - maybe 10 years or more. The contact is always an issue. Now I bought a new horse, a stallion. Oreo. He is so cute but i think they stressed him evry much in the mouth. So i am focusing on relaxing him, trusting my hands, which are now a bit strong!! @@spaziocasainterioare1656 hi, I read your post and understand what you are saying. Even when you pick up your reins to warmup, you are working on contact. This video is just going more into understanding the contact more, and refining the contact. It isn’t like you are suddenly working on contact, you are always working on it. If your horse is very bad in the contact, maybe going back to working on the ground, to get him to move off your hands so he uses his hindlegs more. Bad issues in the contact are usually from the hindlegs being shutdown, maybe due to lots of pulling on the mouth. Good luck 😊😊

Hoi Tommie, fijne video!

I have a student who I just started teaching. Her horse curls behind the vertical even though she is light with her hands. How can we encourage her horse to come to the bit? I am informed this young horse was ridden in a Pelham by the previous trainer and wonder if this could be the source of the mistrust. She is now in a simple eggbutt snaffle bit.

Go foreward until the horse start making more connection when it gets ‘too much’ than slow down again. See video transitions 😉

How do you correct the horse when it does not get strong when you take contact but lift its head way up and or shake the head?
@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 2 года назад
Good question difficult to answer without seeing it 😅 most of the time when the horse don’t accept the contact it’s important to teach him that the hand in not to block on but get soft en relaxation. Togheter ofcourse with the tempo Control. I made a video about transitions mabe that’s helpful to watch 😁

Why do horses put their head down when you make a connection instead of getting tense and trying to take the pressure of? Does moving fhe bit relax de horse?
@Begijnhoeve_official
@Begijnhoeve_official 3 года назад
Horses are flight animals so in there nature when something is unknown they flee with there head up. If you sit on them for the first time they mostly get tensed and try to run. The bit itself don’t make them relax but if you are a good rider you can use that tool to build confidence and make your horse trust you and being relaxt! When a horse start to relax then they will put their head down. 😁
