Practice Notes 61 | How to Practice and Improve TRILLS
This week we head back to the piano for an intensive on trills. I go over some different types of trills, things to keep in mind, how to practice them, and an exercise I use to work on trills in a concentrated manner.
*EDIT: there is a mistake in labeling - Les Barricade Misterieuses is by Couperin not Rameau :))

And you helped me improve tremendously. I can not only tap faster up to 850 taps a minute, but tap more consistently from the minor changes using the advice from this video. The pinky and ring finger trilling is the most annoying out of all of them! La Campanella is especially good at killing the poor ring and pinky fingers, so is Chopin’s Chromatique etude. Very nice video as always; your animations are definitely superb. Trilling is one of my weak points so I will try out some of your exercises. I especially liked your balance example, i.e. the pencil example. I never thought of it that way.
@NahreSol
@NahreSol 6 лет назад
Yes, 4-5 is definitely not easy! 😂 thanks for the comment!!!
@chenyanhao676
@chenyanhao676 6 лет назад
I think the second etude you’re able to get away with 3-4 chromatic runs, stuff like hammerklavier 1st or op111 2nd mvt is just impossible to use 3-4. Most pianists cheat during these movements by missing out a note in the trill when they reach for a chord below
@constracted7331
@constracted7331 6 лет назад
banson houry I am studying Chopin’s Chromatique etude and you cannot get away with all 3-4 fingerings. It'll just end up being harder and diminish the entire purpose of playing the etude. Missing a note in a trill could arguably make the melody clearer due to no clashing of the trill notes with the melody line, which creates dissonance. Such is the case with Beethoven’s third movement of Waldstein; many pianists substitute a note of the trill for a note of the melody to juxtapose the melody from the trill. Personally, I would prefer a piece be played as written, and I favour the trill notes not be substituted. While yes, some pianists do substitute trill notes to cheat, I would also think some concert pianists are capable of performing the trills featured in Hammerklavier and op. 111 despite their sheer technical and musical difficulty but don’t for the sake of emphasizing the melody.
@chenyanhao676
@chenyanhao676 6 лет назад
Majed Kalaoun Cortot recommends 3-4-5, not exactly a pinky trill
@constracted7331
@constracted7331 6 лет назад
banson houry It is in most cases more demanding than a pinky trill, especially because of the dyads you have to play with the same hand. There's also a section in which you have to swiftly alternate between the 4-5 fingers as you're descending while playing dyads with, again, the same hand. That, to me, is much more challenging than a solo pinky trill. Nevertheless, in my original comment, I stated that Chopin’s Chromatique is good at torturing your 4-5 fingers (which I think is pretty clear haha), not that it includes trills. Cheers,

Hi! So, I watched this a couple of years ago, and meant to start practicing my trills. Life intervened, though, and it took me a while to get around to it. However, I would often recall your demos in the video, and have been practicing most days (slowly at first to avoid injury, of course) for a couple of months. Since I don't have a piano right now, I've had to make do with table tops, etc., but they work pretty well. Also, when watching Barry Harris' videos (and your bebop video with him) I became interested in his "dim 6" scale, worked out the fingerings, AND his block-chord style of playing (like George Shearing), so have included multiple-note trills in my practice. Thanks for being here to remind and encourage us in our practice!
