Do you ever struggle with making conversations with new people? Have you ever felt that doing so is awkward, unnatural and weird? Let me know in the comments below!
Linda Raynier , English is my second language and whenever I go to interviews I feel like I am going to be judged on that the minute I open my mouth. It makes me feel weird.
I am still struggling on the conversation with the new people, i don’t know how to prolong the conversation. I don’t know what is the next word I will say.
I feel like talking with someone or keeping a conversation is the most awkward thing I’ve ever done. It happens that I miss words or phrases when I’m nervous 😟.
Giving yourself time to develop communication skills is important too! Don't let one bad experience hold you back. Keep pushing and applying steps like Linda mentioned!
Hi Linda. In elementary school, when teachers thought I couldn't speak and saw a speech therapist who knew I can talk regardless of a mild stutter problem proved them wrong. I always have trouble making conversations with people that led to some violence because if I don't have the right hearer, the peaceful conversation won't exist. P.S. I'm real good at anticipating the other person to get a sense of their vision. I have to think before I speak and the words don't flow out of me. I use a recorder to practice explaining my vision verbally where nobody can cut me off. Your voice is rich and your very beautiful.
I have been binge watching your videos for the past couple weeks and I truly believe they have played a big part in helping me land my new job! Thanks so much!
I'm binge watching too! My big assessment day and then interview (hopefully - if I am chosen) is next week, so I have a few more days to binge watch and take notes.
i believe in these action steps for improving communication skills i.e. 1. Listening carefully 2. Start with saying supporting phrases followed by 3. telling the experience u had, or stories in terms of STAR, is an acronym for Situation, Time, Action, and Result 4. Practice. this also works for answering job/ career interview question, like tell me about your self, why u r qualified for this role (STAR) etc.
The single most awkward situation is entering s room of people that you don't know and u are trying to adjust to them. Its the most difficult situation to be in becoz of the fact we don't know the ppl and we hesitate to be judged. We need to overcome that thinking and just be open to others. ❤
For a person like me whose working in a Business Processing Outsource or commonly known as "call center" in our country, this video is really a great help. Thanks Linda...
Try creative writing. Communication is a skill that needs to be practiced like any other, so when you have to redo a paragraph multiple times to fully convey what you're describing to the reader or greatly helps improve that skill.
Thanks for this. I used to be really awkward especially in initiating conversations, however, today I am guiding people on how to become good communicators. It easy and takes some basic steps.
Love what you said about the importance of using our intuition when listening to someone. This is so key and will improve the quality of the conversation/interaction immensely. Cheers!
I'm glad i found your channel. I often having difficulty in expressing my message across. Or vice versa understanding the message that the person i'm talking to, specially when they have their native accent. where the english language has "colonial" accent. thanks for the advice.
I love your videos, Linda! I found your channel just a few days before a big interview for a new job and they really helped me through the entire process! I landed it! Thank you so much!!
So thankful for this video honestly I want to improve on my social skills and learn how to speak differently I feel like my speech problems are coming back.
These are really great tips. I’ll definitely keep them in mind. My question is, how do you begin the conversation in the first place? I think that’s the most difficult part in a conversation with a stranger. How can you break the ice and not make it awkward?
Great video, Linda! Listening is such a key component in good communication. I love that you gave practical advice and specific example wording to use!
Tenacious One this is my goal as well; and it is not for me to appear intelligent in others’ eyes but just for me to feel confident in myself when I interact with anyone. I want to be articulate, eloquent.. etc
Kia Ora Linda all the way from New Zealand. I just want to say thank you for all your video tips they really helped me a lot I got the job I applied for thanks to your advice. Really appreciate it
Thank U Lady for Your advice to show and acknowledge me to speak up and communicate well in Inglish because I was so afraid to talk thee English children at school and disingage myself from them, but I do have the ability to talk and communicate with them,I believe that they were the upper class, from those days, oooh silly of me
This is my first time on your youtube channel and this topic is the extreme importance to me. because I am trying to learn how to have a conversation in a foreign language by the way my native language is Portuguese so it is important to me even with my mother tongue if I want to have a meaningful conversation. Thank you so much from Brazil.
Very useful video. It was more perfect video if you put all 4 point in small sentences and put in scene .so we can screenshot it and will be more easy to remember. Thanks.❤️❤️
This is very helpful. I'm struggling with the way I communicate with people and that's really my weakness.. However, this should be my strength since Im working in the corporate world.
Thank you Linda! I loved this video ,it is very useful and it will help me a lot on how to improve my communication skills. RU-vid recommended your video when I was watching Communication Coach Alexander Lyon channel. I've liked and subscribed to your channel!
Following these tips as I'm about to go visit my mother in law. Who I've known for 8 years, but she doesn't like me (she has told me this), and I always have no idea what to talk about. She really intimidates me. Hopefully these tips help!
You have to get pass the intimidation by saying in your head she is not better than you. Just be yourself, when you try to hard people can see through that. Some people use intimidation bc they want to see your reaction,; are you weak or a strong person. I used to work in a salon where a lot of obnoxious new yorkers come through, I found out real quick to give it right back & they will respect you. You let them know that you're not a weak person.
Hi Linda interesting video. i'm a taking a career in marketing but i really can't stand people talking excessively on a simple point. can you give tips on how to deal with that, THANKS. i love your work!!
I can do well in interviews and presentations, since I prepare and practice everything. But when it comes to real life, I struggle a bit with holding up the conversations and making connection with people. Please give me some advise
What about in a case which english is not your first language or not your mother tounge.. and yet you still wanting to have a good conversation to them? Any tips? Many times ive have been experienced that im struggling understand and catch those words or what they really want to say.. eventhough i have a basic knowledge on speaking foreign language like english. Thanks ms linda .. keep it up👍🏼
Practice, practice pronunciation and listen videos in that matter. Speak slowly and take pause if necessary. If you don't understand the other person, is totally ok to ask them to tell you one more time without it doing it NOT more than 2 times.
I like to say thank you so much because of your video and guidelines on how to answer and communicate in times of situational interviews by watching all of this it gives me a great help and confidence in my managerial promotions interview that's why I'm succeed..again thank you and more power..
I am an international student and just come to America for three months. when I trying to join the group networking, sometimes I only understand 50% what they are talking about .If I couldn't understand them, how could I communicate with others. I am really struggling right now. Do you have any suggestion of how to improve listening ability? THX!
Does anyone know about a website or an app where I can just call or text people that are willing to chat at any time? I really want to improve my communication skills. My parents are EXCELLENT at keeping a random conversation going with random people, and I am always left in awe at how that is even possible.
In the second step what if I cannot relate to what they’re saying at that point how do I continue a conversation without being able to relate to their topic of interest? I normally would say please tell me more but then I find myself stuck because I have no idea what else to say besides that’s interesting... I’m a wonderful communicator but if I have a no idea what they’re talking about it’s hard for me to engage at that point what advice would give ?
We were considered to communicate in order to earn our grades. We read comic-books in English . We discussed on -line n associated words with pictures. We were taught how to be innate. I am a teacher. A- level students.
