Thank you for another great post! Love tip no. 6, so important and actually difficult to lose that fear, esp. as one works and strives to play with as perfect intonation as possible. A real contradiction, but very true and important. Also appreciate that you expose your own challenges and don't pretend that you were born with perfect intonation, and that a lot (and constant) work has to go into it by everyone...

Every morning I play a slow scale while listening to an “ambient pad” video. Really gets my intonation dialed in.

I have loved a great explanation, like all your videos. I also play the cello, one of the most important parts to play early good - in my point of view - is to eliminate mental noises.

as a former viola student who adapted those skills to guitar, I really liked your explanations and advise for playing slow and use less vibrato to improve intonation. Great insights!

Wow! Vibrato. I took lessons at the community center with a professional cellist. Group lessons which I like because we can learn to play with others and learn from each other. We kept asking for her to teach us vibrato, but she never did over the four years pre-pandemic. So I turned to books and the internet for vibrato lessons, but could never get the hang of it. So hard without the support of a teacher.

I never try the cello but I'm currently learning the violin as a beginner. When I was introduced to intonation I was relieved to tell my teacher I've practiced at home and I've found a way to know "for sure" I was in tune (I was super worried to learn a fretless string instrument because it just seemed impossible !). I told her I noticed the sound was different when I was right on the note, it was ringing, louder, purer, no way to miss it. This one is very true, it sounds much better when you've found the notes, it's not just about the pitch by itself, intonation actually help with the tone. All your tips are great, I like a lot the one about "strong fingers" and "go for it".

Almost perfect explanation i think 👌Thx!! .. only thing I‘d like to add to the „there is no shortcut“ - is: your mindset while practicing can be kind of a shortcut. You said something close to it but I think there is a lot going on with having the „right“ mindset while playing the cello in regards to how effective the time is you invest. If you are sleepy or hungry- just do something about it. And picture yourself/your intonation in a way it should become. Like favorably all the time. .. At least that’s something I found for myself :) .. Great content anyways man! keep em comin 😍

Great video! Can you do a video which shows the difference between a cello that’s been played out of tune compared to one that hasn’t? Or maybe better “fixing” the Overtones of one that has been out of tune, by playing it for a few hours. I’m sceptical but fascinated to see if that works!!

I am still a beginner (2years of playing) but I find it helpful to use the tuner 1 or 2 times after I study a piece. It always comes out that some notes I was hearing in tune, are not :-D

Very interesting with the strong fingers tip. My teacher (a renowned cellist) advises soft hands, as to not have excessive tension.

I feel bad now because I didn't practice yesterday 😂

In the beginning one obstacle to accurate intonation is that the fingertips haven't developed callouses yet, and they mush around.

Hi Pablo. You have been my favourite cellist after I heard you played in Hong Kong and Your bow hold tutorial really helped me a lot. For tip 2, may I ask if you are listening to the overtone or the undertone of a note? From my observation, violinist always aim to get the undertones while cellists tends to find the overtones and that’s makes the string quartet playing so hard. May I know what do you think about it?

I'm working on a peice in orchestra called "Insomnia" by Peter Sciaino. It changes strings a lot, and I've been having trouble getting a clear sound when quickly changing notes, and I've also had trouble accidentally grazing other strings. Any tips?

Ok, but how to does one get strong fingers? I've been struggling with it and noticed that lots of cellists have hard hands, with fingers that don't have much flexibility, so it's quite natural to them to "play strong", because the fingers don't move much. My fingers are way too flexible.
