Jay thank you so much for contacting me and the encouragement needed to make me a good saxophone player. As I approached the tender age of 70 sometimes I wonder what took so long. Whether it was military life, family life what ever it was or is I'm happy to have two musical instructors to push me forward. Thanks again and keep the data coming. Thomas

I've mostly practiced scales in 1/8th notes with metronome set at 4 beats to the bar. Setting it on 2 & 4 really forces you to get into the groove of landing dead on that beat every 4th note. Instantly becomes more musical. Great stuff - love it.

Thanks for this great lesson, Jay! As a drummer from long ago, and now a 59 year old beginning sax player (with my BetterSax alto saxophone; so gorgeous!), I am pleasantly surprised about the emphasis on rhythm. It is indeed the heartbeat of the music! Right now I'm working on your free Pentatonic PSBE course, and plan on taking the full Pentatonic Foundation course once I'm done with the intro one. Thanks for being there and providing such great resources for all of us aspiring saxophone players. I was really noticing how smoothly you were playing in this video; some serious inspiration!

Was never taught to use a metronome... Bought an app for the smartphone and began following some beginner-level long-tones and exercises in an old band book. The rhythm started standing out-in 3D and has more of a physical feel to it. The journey has just gotten more real and I am really enjoying these FREE sessions and excited to participate in the many online courses you have available. :)

I recently learned the idea of following the metronome off the beat from pianist Adam Maness. It completely helps me lay back in swing tunes. Thanks for reinforcing this idea, Jay!

The Tonalenergy app has totally transformed my practice and playing these past few months. Before, playing with a metronome was always a bit meh...Silly me. First thing I do now, once I've put my horn together is fire up the app and clip in my ear buds. Thanks Jay !

This is very good advice. I was watching a Rick Beato video on the things he wished he had known when he started. One was using a metronome from the start. His guest said the ability to play to a click tract is necessary for anyone aspiring to be a studio musician. It is part of the studio environment and a must have skill. Eventually playing a memorized tune like Jay demonstrated in the video with only the metronome while simultaneously visualizing the chord progression so not to be depending on the rhythm section to keep our place is the goal. He makes it look easy!

Very good rhythmic ideas, Jay! I will try playing with less metronome clicks by measure and fitting in more notes in time. And yes, moving the beats on 2 and for to swing even more. My ex-spouse was a professional saxophonist but was never thouhgh those great tips!

By coincidence I just tried something new today for timing. I recorded myself playing with the metronome using iPad Voice Recorder. I just played one head and listened back, hearing the timing mistakes and the articulation. Was a very quick way to improve. Afterwards I played along with a Scott Hamilton track I know by heart and I really felt a difference - like I'd been rushing before and now with just 20 minutes metronome and listening I was quite different.

Hello Jay. Living down the road from you in France, one can’t but help notice how the public just love clapping along on beats 1 & 3 when listening to live music in 4/4. A lot of my students have initial problems with playing the notes ‘dans l’air’; although I’ve been playing and teaching Sax for many years now, I’ve never before thought of referring so specifically to the beats 2 & 4, when playing along to the clicks the metronome, (Uh . . . Dang)! From now on, I’ll certainly be encouraging my students to internalise the force of beats 2 & 4, when working with a metronome. Fantastic!

Yes this is a cultural thing. In America we benefit from the tremendous influence of the Black American musical tradition which has its roots in West African music hence clapping on 2 and 4 where appropriate is nearly universal.

After 50 years of playing sax, I decided to face the demon and started playing drums. This has really helped me with tempo and rhythm. My instructor insisted on using a metronome and I've begun using one when playing sax too. One thing I do is program the metronome to be silent for 2 or 3 measures and see if I can still stay in sync. One thing I've noticed on drums is when I am exactly in sync, the metronome beat seems to go away or can't be heard.

similar experience here - my sax teacher in my teens actually insisted on me playing with a metronome cause I was severely rhythmically challenged and while it helped a bit it didn't do enough for me to develop an intuitive sense of rythm cause simultaneous foot tapping is beyond me (my brain won't let me do it as soon as 1/8 or shorter notes are involved - like I will automatically tap on the off beat once I start playing ). Years later I picked up the electric guitar... and all of the sudden dealing with strumming patterns that require me to do what this lesson suggests, head nodding and counting /humming along with the rythm made things click that 7 years of alto sax lessons never did. I can feel tempo now and hear rhythm in a way that I never did before, so the metronome is no longer distracting but something I can return to if I slip up anywhere cause the count never stops. Playing an instrument that allowed me to have a metronome in my head via headphones while playing was an absolute game changer.

Keeping rhythm or lack there of is hurting my ability to play songs I am not familiar with and need to rely on the note durations etc on the sheet music. Thanks for the tips.

Hi Jay! I also had problems with timing. One sunny day I realise bad timing not so nice to hear. I start to just play long notes on my horns, some notes not wright but in good time, so after that I improvise all the time, work good if i say it myself. Metronome is perfect also, just as you do in this lessen, great tips! Take care//Johnny D Bergh

rhythm is the hallmark of identity imo.. you can play notes, but the dynamics, sound, and 'time feel' and other things like articulation is how a sound can be developed, and recognized, distinct sound

RU-vid is a pretty helpful tool for learning songs at slower tempos. You can click that little gear icon and play the video/song at 3/4, half, or 1/4 the speed.

I have a tendency to play with a swing feel when training arpeggios with the metronome set at beats 2 and 4. I guess it's fine, but I'll start to train them with even feeling as well.

Hi BS! Great tips you got here, at last I realise doin so in my playing! Another thing, large issue it is for me and for all jazzmusichens! Should we play solos, copy them, be a bunch of small C Parkers? When I play trumpet just copy Chet Bakers solos? I noticed you have a Klangbogen attached to your sax, is this a good improvement in sound ?, because I´m not able to test it in my country, I need decision help, please tell me what you think or what your exprience is with this devise. Thanks. Yes I've been testing out the Klangbogens recently. I'll be doing a video on them soon. It's the sort of thing that is suited to professional and very advanced players in my opinion. You need to have a very well developed sound before it will make any difference for you.

So Jay when I get my Yamaha yas 280 in a couple days time, and after not touching the reed tip, what or where do Ingo from there. Ro I audition for a funky house venue and hope I pick it up quick, or accept I am at level zero and get some beginner tunes to play. Probably learn the keys 🎹 might be good first thing to do. Hmmmmmm

Another way is if you are reading music, tap your foot in time in quarter notes...

I can never keep track of the beat, my sax overpowers the puny noise from my phone, when I'm doing rhythm practice or on piano I have no problem keeping track because I mouth the time, but on sax I can't tapping my foot doesn't feel right either, any other types of keeping time I could use?

Use headphones or ear buds. Also the thoughts in the mind are the same whether you are mouthing the time or just thinking it (hard). Just keep working on it.

Thank you, God i have that elusive thing known as "very good natural timing." Watch this: YES, WE STILL USE A METRONOME. lol. ALL of us do. Don't care if you're Bernard Purdie (Steely Dan, See "Home at last"). HE still does after probably 60+ years playing drums. Helps to be a drummer, already. I let my Roland V-drum.brain box tend to count 16ths (1 and uh 2 e and uh...) in Japanese man voice (lol), but only the ones i need. Not every one. That would make it too messy.
