HOW TO INCREASE FOOD 10X ON UR DEER HUNTING FARM?

In this video I discuss how I am setting this property up through a TSI, block and funnel, and adding fruit and nut trees. Deer need and want thick cover and bedding during the fall and winter months, this farm currently has very little in the form of cover. I hinge cut, feel trees, and make paths for the deer to use to make the deer come right by your stand. Habitat management also helps with food as the forrest floor explodes with young nutritious plants the whitetails love. Adding in chestnut and pear trees helps to diversify the farm and help pull mature bucks in during the deer hunting season.

Ahhh, the old Funnel trick!! Yes, It’s a really good way to squeeze deers into range. Next you’ll need a bigger freezer and more wall hanging space!! Smh…

Hey Wes! I’m just north of you in Illinois doing a lot of this cool stuff to my own little property. Love the videos. Myself and some of my buddies have velvet whitetail on our bucket list. How do I book a hunt with you?

Hey Josh! I shut down the velvet season last year and don’t have any plans to reopen it anytime soon. It was a tremendous amount of work on my end, and I just don’t have time to do it anymore. I appreciate you reaching out!

Why not burn the leaf litter before cutting? Wouldn’t that supercharge the greenup and regen especially for bedding?
@DIYfoodplotpro
@DIYfoodplotpro 4 месяца назад
Yes that would get the process started faster for sure, but I’ll still get the growth without the burn. I don’t have a good way to burn these woods….lots and lots of liability on my end. Thanks for watching

Whats your thoughts on property thats been hit by a tornado ? It was closed canopy hardwood with absolutely no food other than acorns . Now its a few big hardwood left standing the rest is a mess ! Is that gonna create browse, cover , bedding that attract and hold deer or is it gonna come back so thick they wont use it ? Ive went in and made 8 or so bedding areas that'll hold 1 to 10 or so deer .

I personally have never seen an area to thick for whitetails when it comes to hardwood regeneration, but I’ve also never walked a mature woods that was devastated by a tornado….so it’s hard to say without laying eyes on it. It would 100% help if you were to cut some trails through it…lots of work but I suspect that would really help the deer utilize the property. It will absolutely Create browse and bedding and will eventually be a phenomenal spot as the saplings turn to thickets and the timber deteriorates. Thanks for watching and good luck!

Areas can develop where mature stands with thin topsoil blow down. If that blowdown area is too thick, hard barriers exist and sunlight still does not adequately penetrate to the forest floor for regeneration. Even if regeneration is initiated, and species suitable for bedding and deer-level browse develop, deer just can't properly access and utilize it for years because of the hard barriers. My advice is to leave enough side cover that deer feel safe in it without it becoming a box or a trap. Create areas for deer-level woody browse to develop, and areas for them to bed down. Create a balance: Remove the big blowdowns and leave what you want: make areas where sunlight can reach the forest floor and stimulate regeneration, and leave enough side cover for the deer. It will become great habitat, much better than a mature hardwood stand.

@@donaldardell7978 Absolutely correct after walking it some this morning it's so thick with wild grape vine , honeysuckle only in very small spots does the sunlight hit the ground. The storm deposited some kudzu when it went through and that stuff ain't no joke it grows fast and thick ! Thanks for the info you guys are helping me more than you know . Thanks 👍

Hi Jim, you have a great opportunity to create an amazing hunting land. FIRST!, figure your best edge hunting spots, half with a south wind the other with a north wind. You should only plan on hunting the outside edges of your property, leave most of your land for the deer. Now that you determined hunting spots, where you can get in and out undetected, the fun begins; rent a mini excavator and create a zig zag food plots utilizing the best hunting spots, your food plots should be at least 1/4 acre but less than 1/2 acre. Don't bulldoze the land because you will loose your topsoil, your goal is to remove stumps brush while leaving as much topsoil as possible. Start with two food plots and work on creating more every year. After the food plots are completed you need to cut travel corridors between the food plots and going past your stand sites; these trails are for the deer only, you should not cross them or walk on them. For the first couple years you should spray the deer trails with round up, this only needs to be 3 feet wide and will be the only time that you walk on the trails. Your goal is not to feed the deer, but keep them moving from food plot to food plot. I am not a professional land manager but i have been hunting only whitetails for 50 years. There is a lot more that you will learn as you create this prefect big buck area, but if you can follow what I am trying to help you create, it's a great start.
