For those that are still a little lost, changing the katana from B rank INT scaling and E Rank STR/DEX scaling to E Rank STR scaling and A Rank DEX scaling was a significant damage increase because his DEX was significantly higher than his INT. Elemental damage types also scale off of certain stats, like Lightning scaling with Faith and Cold scaling with INT. This allows you to give certain weapons a hidden dual scaling through the ashes of war; you can add an Ash of War that scales with INT (Hoarfrost Stomp) to a weapon that scales with DEX (Keen Uchigatana). The Ash of War will use the base damage of the weapon and then further increase that damage based on stat scaling for its element, hence why Hoarfrost Stomp did more damage when he raised his INT even though his weapon doesn't scale with INT at all.

Something else to consider, when applying an ash of war choosing a scaling that adds a element type like poison or blood then you cannot apply weapon enchantments or grease.

Also. Something I noticed last week when playing Elden ring as I was walking thru a cave with my stats screen up I noticed that as I stepped into water my lightning defense actually went down, subsequently my fire defense rose up.. very close attention to detail here from Fromsoft. And like I said I haven't seen or heard anyone mention this yet. This is actually major when implemented PvE luring enemies or bosses to be in a pool of water before tossing lightning spear at them to get a increase in damage same could be said in PvE. On the flipside you yourself standing in water when fighting an enemy or opponent using fire attacks so to boost your fire defense. A very interesting detail that can have some major impact when utilized proper or have devastating consequences when unknowingly factored in against you

Hey Moxsy as always a thorough and awesome video, but just so you know, just because weapons have the same letter grades for scaling, it doesn't mean the scaling is *exactly* the same, or at least in past soulsborne games it didn't mean that, i.e. all A scalings are higher than all Bs, but not all As are equal amongst themselves
@marsh5953

exactly. so whilst i appreciate all the effort that went into this even the very first test is kind of invalid because they're different weps, even though the both have the same numerical scaling the values could be quite different. one weapon at +22 could be a high B and one at +18 could also be a high B. meanwhile another at +24 could be a low B.

If anyone's curious of the actual math behind scaling, then the gist of it is that two multipliers (one from the weapon's scaling letter, and the other from your character's stats) are applied to the weapon's base damage, the result of which is added as scaling damage. **BREAKDOWN** A weapon's letter scaling (S > A > B > C > D > E) represents a percentage of its base damage, which is added as bonus damage (or "scaling damage", whatever). I don't know the exact values, but if they're anything like those in Bloodborne & Dark Souls 3, then an S scaling would represent ~120%, while an E scaling would represent ~20%. This is called the weapon's _Coefficient._ If you see an S scaling anywhere, then you know that it represents ~120% of the weapon's base damage; an E scaling anywhere represents ~20%, and so on. 100 baseDMG: S scaling = 120 bonusDMG; E scaling = 20 bonusDMG. 250 baseDMG: S scaling = 300 bonusDMG; E scaling = 50 bonusDMG. 60 baseDMG: S scaling = 72 bonusDMG; E scaling = 12 bonusDMG. This "120% - 20%" range does _not_ represent the actual numbers, but hopefully you get the methodology. Anyways, this is where your actual stats (Strength, Dexterity, Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane) all come into play. A second multiplier, called _Saturation,_ is applied to the Coefficient. At 99 of whatever stat, you are getting [1.0x] the Coefficient's value, but at 20 of whatever stat, you are only getting [~0.25x] of the Coefficient's value. If you have 99 Strength and a weapon with an S scaling in Strength, then you are getting [1.0x] the full 120% Coefficient. But, if you only have 20 Strength, then that Coefficient goes down to ~30% (= 120% x 0.25 Saturation). I should point out that it's not a linear "1 point = +0.01 Saturation". If you were to graph it out, you'd see an S-Curve that starts slow, slopes hard in the middle, and then flattens back out as it reaches 99. The idea being that: 0 - 20 points gives almost no Saturation 20 - 40 points in a given stat gives you modest Saturation 40 - 60 points gives a ton of Saturation 60 - 80 points gives you modest Saturation again 80+ points is generally a waste because, by then, you're already very close to that magical 1.0x Saturation (say, around 0.98x), so it's best to put those levels into something like Vigor or Mind. The basic formula is: Scaling Damage = BaseAR * (Coefficient * Saturation) E.g., with 250 BaseAR | S scaling in Strength (+120%) | 80 Strength (0.98x Saturation) = 250 * (120% * 0.98) = 250 * 117.6% = 279 scaling damage (for 529 total Attack Rating)

Ok so when u put on the mimic mask it makes u do less damage read the description of the item but mainly bloody slice doesn't stack bleed I prefer other blood ash of wars if ur doing a arcane build and a weapon already has bleed then it's best to do occult affinity since that scales with arcane. If you do Occult affinity then your bleed build up speed stays fixed, while for weapons with Blood affinity not only their base damage starts scaling with Arc, but also the bleed build up. Weapons with blood affinity and high Arc can reach 110+ bleed build up per attacks, which is MUCH better than the baseline 45/50/60 of the non-blood weapons.

AoW uses basicly this rule Reads the + number of the weapon Reads the current scale bonuses Uses it's "own" scale you can't see This means it's formula is as following in simple form (Scale magnified + multiplier applies) + (Affinity magnifier) * (Scale Weapon 1) + (SW2) + (SW3) + (SAoW) from the look. So AoW is just a separated attack...it's only reading scales from the weapon as magnifiers. Makes sense since some AoW are ...spells which Spells work like weapons AND they use the same logics based on the Spell Magnifier + The set scale magnifiers from the casting focus (Be some are Arcane + Faith, INT + ARC, Faith + INT etc.) The Dragon breaths for example are def using Arcane and faith for scale damages. This also means the softcaps are applying their limits. So generally up to...4 scales apply to a weapon of 4 stats or of 3 stats generally. Good example is Blade of N&F: It uses STR/DEX = Phys INT/FAITH for their respected dmg types. based for magnifiers. This would equation to example a all 40 stat line say (let pretend everything is pretty flat and multipliers are as I state) STR 40 / 2 = 20 (Phys) DEX 40 / 1 = 40 (Phys) INT 40 / 3 = 13 (Magic) FAITH 40 / 3 = 13 (Magic) Weapons use a + to determine a type of "Magnifier" which is basically upping the base damage and the state scale upwards. Those letters are just breach points... TBH and that's why weapons get weird about it cause their Magnifier is different for the base vs the stat amplifier. Sometimes a affinity multiplier it on a weapon for certain things though. (Status effects also are a type of damage hurting a special health bar going up instead of down thus the term build up) So that weapon lets say has base damage of 50 Psy/Fire/Magic it now deals on gap 50+60 Phys (110) 50+13 Fire & Magic 63/63 so the array is 110/63/63 (each applying seperalty defensive wise) and also to note...swings you do might have...diffrent amplifiers or such so say a spear is pierce damage and deals say 5% more damage than typical...based on it's programed move set? so in basics thats 1.05 more damage at the...end of the calcs finale stuff (I wont go into this but AoW does). a AoW now is a seperate entity reading off like a spell that uses the WEAPON as a focus....So It'll read what it wants to read...based on an array of lets say the beam on N&F it will state all Faith is divide by 0...that NULLS faith damage amps, BUT it already has a INT scale...so it'll DOUBLE DIP! that weapons +13....is used in the read plus the damage stats it's trying to read from the weapon...of it's STR/DEX scale! etc. now this means any scales the weapon trys to pull physical most likely is acting like a focus amplifier. Since it'll still cast the EXACT skill it's tied to scale then read the weapon formula it's ment to read too. So let say beam deals scales of INT 40 * 2 = 80 + 13 + 60 = 143 Magic damage from beam that can tick say 5 hits per 0.5 sec so up to 715 dmg with 5 resist ticks from the protection source. (Did you notice my math is not mega far from the numbers you're reading in game), That's cause though they hide the math...you can summarize the array. is just additive logics. Thats why when you add scales all around sometimes they're just adjusting the magnifier count for the assigned stats applying. TL;DR or confusing like he said: USE affinity stats for the skill. JUST like how weapons have affinity stats for physical. DEX vs STR, Arcane sometimes exists...but generally arcane scales are unique weapons period. And if the effect is Under magic school use INT, if it's Divine school use Faith, If other schools use that schools highest format stat it asks for reqs. So just think of AoW as spells, and your weapon as the focus. Pretty simple tbh. This is why the N&F sword was broken btw...It's magnifier count was outrageously high and grew massively with the + of a unique weapon along with double dipping INT or FAITH based on which AoW swing you did.

Very nice analysis, but I see two potential flaws: a) the dragon's resistances could play a role (like if it is resistant to magic it could make sense, that you deal more damage with a keen weapon which boosts physical damage) and b) your armor could play a role (like the Snow Witch Hat "Strengthens cold sorcery."). Not sure if that is of any relevance for your setup (I do realize you don't wear a helmet, don't know if there are other armor pieces with such bonuses), but these two factors should be taken into consideration, I think.
@rpielow
@rpielow 2 года назад
Regarding point 'a' I think since he's only attacking the dragon and comparing damage values when he modifies his own stats, it doesn't really matter what the dragon's resistances are since the goal of the experiment is to see what stat changes modify the damage numbers at all. If the dragon had really high magic resistance and we did something that increased magic damage but it did only a little bit more damage, we don't really care that it only did a little bit of extra damage, we care that the stat change made the damage number change at all.

@@rpielow I guess you are right. Although it's still a little confusing to me, the damage calculation in this game is pretty complex, I guess. To get a clearer picture, I did some further testing on the dragon with Hoarfrost Stomp (Uchigatana +23). In my case (Vig 43, Mind 30, End 18, Str 14, Dex 35, Int 68, Fth 7, Arc 9), Frost scaling outperforms the others a tiny bit: Keen: 1446 (Queen's Crescent Crown --> +3 Int) Magic: 1454 (Queen's Crescent Crown) Frost: Snow Witch Hat - 1458 Snow Witch Set - 1458 Queen's Crescent Crown - 1462 Then I switched to Dex 40, Int 63 and here are the numbers: Keen: 1464 Magic: 1458 Frost: 1474 It's kind of surprising to me that Keen overtakes Magic, but Frost still is the winner. I feel like there is no way around testing it for oneself, with your stats, to find out, which is the best scaling in every case.

Not true. I tested this with blasphemous blade. Increasing strength from 25 to 50 did not increase the flame pillars damage at all, while increasing faith consistently increased it. What it seems like is that all attacks have an element, with built in scaling, and your weapons scaling (to those stats only) also stack. So fire seems to only scale off of faith as far as I can tell (have not tested arcane). Ice seems to scale off int and strength, lightning seems to scale off dex and faith.

I think understand... So in theory increasing your arcane SHOULD increase bleed buildup on a bleed specific ash of war, correct? So an example... A dagger, stack dex, scale a bleed ash of war to dex on that dagger, stack arcane to increase bleed buildup whilst the dex scaling also increases bleed buildup? I know bleed is based on a % of the enemy HP so that wont do more damage just builds bleed faster.

Not acknowledging that scaling affects attack rating of your weapon and not showing/confirming your base stats diminished the clarity of your conclusion. Still a good video overall and worth a sub.

@andrewsmith5012
@andrewsmith5012 2 года назад
Pretty easy to explain. The "status" you can see in the menu is the scaling of the Weapon's "Attacks". The "Ash of War" I consider a spell and it's pretty obvious that it would scale with INT/FT/ARC depending on the skill. It gets more complicated because you have to think about the DMG type of the weapon (pierce etc). For example; if you have a weapon that has a ability that does damage, do you want to make the AOW the main dmg that you do. If it is you scale for that. If you want to hack and slash, you will most likely inc str/dex unless you are fighting enemies that are weak to something. For example, if something is weak vs Frost, you will most likely want to run the AoW that adds to frost. But the ability will suffer if you buff say str instead of INT. Your normal attacks will do more dmg because you are doing physical and frost dmg. The AOW will still do decent dmg but if you want to buff it - scale with int.

The reasons your damage varied so much is 1. 'Sneak attack' bonus on first hit 2. Frostbite would change damage 3. Greyoll's roar has a debuff that lowers your damage For your blasphemous blade tests you didn't get hit by greyolls roar to lower it to the final amount, whereas when you respecced you did so it made it seem more dramatic. Unique weapon arts might just scale off of AR whereas ashs scale best off whatever 'type' the ash sets a weapon to without whetstones. Like how hoarfrost makes wep cold and thunderbolt makes it sacred. Mirais WA says 'scales off AR' on the wiki but it could just be str and arcane which also adds AR so its hard to say Some people think weapon level adds damage because unlike regular AR, which is Base damage + scaling of weapon, Ash's use Base damage + scaling from ash which for hoarfrost would be INT, and that changing the weapons type to have that type of scaling, INT, would add extra scaling to the ash. I want to test on clayman's harpoon because it has natural INT scaling and making it Magic raises the INT scaling dramatically

Can you test armor too? It seems armor does little to nothing in this game. With a high health pool Vs hard hitting multi hit bosses mid-lategame. I noticed when changing armor, that, say I'd die in 6-7 hits with heavy armor. Approximately would die equally fast in light armor. What I've personally noticed, and it could be wrong due to me forgetting other factors, is that armor really does jack all. In fights like twin gargoyle and another boss I can't mention due to spoilers, where I also swapped from medium weight/defense armor to light. The armor seemed pointless. Another example is immunity, robustness etc. for an area with a LOT of scarlet rot. I equipped a charm supposedly "vastly increasing immunity" as well as immunity gear. And the scarlet rot meter didn't change noticably. Against D Tree sentinel and his red lightning that pretty much 1-shots people, I was overleveled and it did maybe 80% of my HP. But with a lightning defense talisman, I couldn't see much difference if any. I could be wrong. And I hope I am. But from my experience it seems like armor and resistances in this game is horribly low by default, to the point where raising one defense significantly only provides a marginal gain. For armor in particular - in the fights I changed from heavier to medium to light - I couldn't notice any meaningful change. If a boss could kill me if I messed up and by hit by nearly a full combo, changing the armor did not noticable make a difference.

I think the damage calculation of ashes of war is based on two things. Total ashe of war damage = 'weapon stats and scaling'+ 'ash of war scaling' This would explain why in the first example you got more damage by having a better dex scaling which increased the 'weapon stats and scaling'. When you increased your int you increased the 'ash of war scaling' It makes sense that the frost ash of war skill scales with int on its own.

You've not really fully confiremed the best way to scale damage as far as I can tell. You've just confirmed some of the things you can do not what you should do. What You Answered: - A higher weapon level = Higher weapon damage plus higher art of war damage. - Increasing the weapon scaling to match your best stat (DEX for example) will increase weapon damage and art of war damage. (But only if art of war type matches?) - If the art of war you're weapon uses is of a particular skill type (Frost based art of wars are INT based) Then even if you're weapon doesn't have INT Scaling the damage of the art of war will increase as you increase you're INT because the art of war is of that type. (Not sure if actual weapon damage increases or just the art of war in this case) What You Didn't Answer: - Yes certain weapons still scale with certain attributes like INT despite them not having INT scaling if the art of war is INT based. But is this scalling better than the scalling you would get putting the points into the best scaling weapon stat. EX: If my weapon has B Dex scaling and no INT scaling but it does have an INT art of war. Will it be better damage wise for me to level up by DEX or INT? sure you can scale with INT despite the weapon not having INT scaling but should you? - If I have Dex scalling weapon with INT based art of war, does increasing DEX only increase weapon damage but the INT based Art of war damage stays the same? - If I have Dex scalling weapon with INT based art of war, does increasing INT only increase Art of war damage but weapon damage stays the same? - If your character has matching DEX and STR is it better to keep weapon scaling for STR and DEX at the same level or is it better to choose one over the other?

Bit late to ask but i'm getting back into ER.. My first playthrough was faith caster and the sword was the golden church sword can't remember the name, so i didn't get into ashes of war too much... now i am. So like, Thunderbolt on the wiki says it's based on the dex scaling of the weapon.. So does that mean just by getting the weapon to an A scaling in dex, it will do more damage than a C scaling in dex weapon, even if I don't put points into Dex? Or does it just mean the same as normal weapon scaling to where the damage is just based off dex so obviously the higher scaling in dex the better the damage if you invest heavily in dex?

Thanks so much for doing the testing on this - there are so many mechanics/stats that aren't accessible/understandable via the in-game displays. To the point of a few people, it's kind of apples-to-oranges to compare the two different weapons at +22 and +24, so I just tried out sacred blade on a +0 and +1 lordsworn's long sword. It clearly scales up. Here's the test I ran: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-e67W8zdIbNQ.html Thanks again for posting this - looking forward to seeing more!

This kinda feels like your just testing live bro. No offense but the vid doesn't have to be this long to be informative. In fact it's kinda overshot where now it makes it hard to sit through all of this. I could do this when I get home if I want. A nice, in depth guide covering a lot of info is ideal. This is kinda a weird vid bro. I'm halfway through the vid and it can be summed up with one sentence and personally I already knew it, but, "ashes of war have their own stats they scale with that is not displayed anywhere in game in our menus." Shit like that is prob why most players are here. This video's has been made for just the noobest of players. Which is fine, except that you present this video as an in depth guide...

I'm so confused as to why this is seemingly so confusing/mind blowing to you based off the enthusiasm in your words when testing... it makes perfect sense for you to get more damage from said weapon/spell/Ash when you align the damage property that said weapon/spell/ash is based off of and or providing you with stats on your character that align with said damage type. I.E aligning sacred blade with Faith. Also most notably the reason hoarfrost stomps damage increases when you increase your INT, is bc hoarfrost stomp as a whole, is a magic based ability/ash of war.. now despite the fact that hoarfrost stomp doesnt outright state doing magic damage you can find this out directly by taking note of what damage type is applied to your weapon when you apply hoarfrost stomp then are prompted to choose between standard damage or..Magic damage" that alone is the way in which you figure out what damage type said ash of war will scale best with when it comes to elemental damage types. This fact will only vary when said ash of war has you choose between standard damage or "heavy quality or keen" in which case the ash will likely scale best with which ever attribute you have more of, be it strength dexterity or a combination of both being a quality build... I hope this long winded explanation helps some further.

Ok, so in my case, with sword dance on nagakiba, I wanna play mainly str/dex/arcane equal stats. What would be the best option for sword dance ashes with my nagakiba ( I noticed that if I add blood it scales a new star which is Arcane also seems to trigger blood loss with less strike than with heavy or standard) but with blood enhancements I can't use bloodflame, or any other arcane buff that increases str. And that's why I'm lost, cause uncan clearly see that adding no ashes or adding sword dance as heavy or standard blood loss triggers a lot less but stagger triggers more often, while adding arcane only increases my elleonoras pole blade damage. I'm still confused how it would scale for better dps/dmg on my nagakiba. If anyone can help, thanks in advance.

okay, so having a higher + on your weapon yields more damage on the ash of war, but is it because the + number is higher or because the per-hit damage is higher? for example, if you have a small dagger at +1 and a big ol colossal weapon at +1, will the bigger weapon deal more damage? essentially, if you want to maximize the damage on your skill, does it benefit you to slap it on the absolute highest per-hit damage weapon you can carry? i'd test this myself but as it happens i made a faith build and can't carry any heavy weapons anyway lol

Oh wait nvm my question was answered by a comment below.

I would say their are three types of ashes of war. Spell , melee and buff. Ashes of war like lions claw is a melee ash and it scales directly off your weapon damage which derives from the weapons base damage and your weapon scailing . hoar frost stomp is a spell ranged ash which derives its base damage from weapon level only and since it’s frost you deal bonus damage from your intellect stat being higher. Buff ashes do what they do independently and only are changed by talismans. To add to the confusion some ashes are hybrids and/or the weapon swing spell animation can also deal base damage and throw numbers off quite a bit . The melee lighting slam ash scales the initial slam based on weapon level and weapon scailing while the lightning bolt that strikes the spot in the ground afterwards follows the spell ash rules above .

just to note testing on this dragon isn't the best because she will sometimes throw out an AR debuff, if you only test your damage when its up thats fine but if you miss it it can cause some variation in the numbers, also hoarfrost stomp isn't magic it's cold and cold is strange unlike magic ashes cold ashes also scale off of strength and dex by an op amount, just better with int were magic ashes don't scale with strength and dex at all
