Does throwing bomb length casts matter in muskie fishing? In many cases it does and it can spell the difference between success and failure during a muskie hunt! As a muskie guide in northern Wisconsin I work with many anglers who struggle to achieve good casting distance due to issues with their technique. Slinging muskie lures a country mile does not have much to do with strength but more to do with the way you use your body and the rod. Thank you. A fisher has to know their equipment too. Casting can be very tiring when the equipment isn't matched up properly. Great advice.

I believe a lot of fishermen struggle with this because they only have 1 rod and need to use it for all sized lures. Matching the correct rod, line and reel is key for long precise casting. Expensive but a key to success.

Good stuff Chas. Back in the day my poppy would tape my dads upper arms to his side so that he could only cast using his forarms and wrists and man he learned to really launch it.

Chas, I want to thank you for all of your educational content. I got my first big musky today, 48 inches, in west-central MN. I was using a topwater lure and went into a Figure 8 out of habit and she bit right as I made the first turn into the 8. I was by myself in the boat and managed to land her, cut hooks, get a measurement and successful release. Your lessons in the educational videos definitely helped me to do a good 8, to remain calm and know how to get the fish in the boat and handle it safely. Not to mention basics like this casting video or the topwater hookset video. Thank you again!

Lol! I admit it. That would be me Chas. I don't musky fish alot. A few times a year. Don't really know why I cast like that. I think I feel like i might over cast. Put it in the trees if i am near shore. I guess it just takes some practice. Nice vid as always Chas. Thanks for your help!

Turning your wrist over also helps keep the reel from backlashing when casting especially bomb casts

Long casts? I worry about the trees HA When you do the correct bent elbow technique you do add energy into the elastic rod which transfers that energy to the lure. When you use the improper body technique it is a longer cast action with less impulse-momentum mv=Ft m= mass of the lure v is the velocity you with it to have and F is the "energy" transferred to the rod/lure There be physics out there Very nice segment. Maybe show we beginners how to 'tune" the reel with that magnetic spinner knob on the side I don't know what it is called but many do not know how to use it

Thanks! I think one of the biggest keys to throwing giant musky lures is to have the correct rod. I'd recommend getting a 10 footer for those applications. St. Croix's LT model 9'6" heavy might be a good option to consider.
