I like dip pens for my final drawing. Thumbnails are normally done in pencil. Initial drawings are either fountain pens or technical pens. Final drawings are with a very light pencil with dip pen ink overlay. After the dip pens are about to be put up I clean each nib under running water, occasionally with a dab or two of dish soap. Usually, that is all that is needed. Then I dry each nib with a paper towel before laying them all out on a sheet of paper towels for a final air drying. Many of my nibs are over 70 years old and are still in great shape. -OkieSketcher1949

Hi Chloe, I love your channel, your videos are well constructed and very informative. Would you share your magnifying light and easel information? They both look amazingly efficient. Yah for studio buddies! 🐈‍⬛

Thank you Glenda! I find most items online or at my local art supply stores. I'll be updating my website soon and aim to have a page dedicated to all the gear & supplies that I use, this table easel gets a lot of inquiries, I admit it is pretty convenient compared to a standard drafting table. My table easel is 20x31 inches. If you do a web search on "Table top easel" or "flat surface table easel" you will find one. The one I have is no longer made (and not that stable), it was on sale at Michael's. If you do a search on "Magnifying lamp" look for one with an Adjustable Swing Arm there's lots to choose from.

I'd like to recommend for you the Pete Beard video series Unsung Heroes of Illustration. You will find A LOT of old masters to drool about. I don't like smooth Bristol very much. I find that when the paper has a bit of tooth I get better line control. Either with a pen or a brush.

oh yes, Pete Beard series! That's where I got hooked on the Leyendeckers, thanks for mentioning it!

I can completely relate to what you described as your struggles. It helps to see that other artists, such as yourself, with greater skills than my own have struggles, too. It helps me to keep going. Thank you for being brave enough to share your process. I love your work.

I appreciate that. It's human to want to feature only the high points and extend a strong public front, but we all know that life is a show of balance. What's that expression ... no light without the darks? 🙂

It's beautiful and so inspiring! I wish I knew how to overcome stumbling blocks. My art process is all over the place.
@longstrideillustration
@longstrideillustration Год назад
Glad you like it. What helps me is to learn to recognize the signs (the red flags) that I'm about to get frustrated before I reach the point of stumbling. And to have a strategy in place so that I can positively deal with those low moments. For example as soon as I feel my project might be going sideways, I take a walk or switch to working on something else that makes me feel productive. I'll make a whole video on this later, stay tuned :)

Maybe I'm just at a crossroads here. I want to draw better and I work at it but I don't want to do work that looks retro. I have to find a way to make better looking work with my comic book stories but not look old fashioned. Have been trying to make a dip pen work after your video on things you wished you knew about it. For certain I need more time with it! Hahaha. My desire would be to draw a modern looking mermaid. Maybe I just need to simplify and be more of a cartoonist rather than be a wannabe Charles Dana Gibson. Sorry if this comment seems a little off the rails. I admire your path of discovery as an artist.

I appreciate you sharing your thoughts, and I understand what you mean. I had never done a vintage style like this before (or a mermaid), it was a challenge for me. I'm sure that your natural style will emerge in time, since you are already on the path to practice and discovery. Have a look at my "How to do Master Studies" video if you haven't already. All the best with your inking 🙂

Nicely done. We have the same heroes in illustration which I wonderful. I have a question however. How do you clean your nibs after using them. I used some Kuretaki ink to create a piece and I have left them overnight to soak in bleach as even trying to clean the nibs with alcohol has failed. Maybe a video on how to take care of your equipment would be nice for those of us who are nee to dip pens.
@longstrideillustration
@longstrideillustration Год назад
oh! I'm not sure that a soak in bleach will have the effect you seek ... might accelerate future corrosion and render the nibs brittle. Hopefully, they're okay. I sometimes use a soft bristle brush (for fingernails or a toothbrush) with a mild cleaning agent and if that doesn't work, a couple of cycles in an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner. Unfortunately, if there is a long accumulation of ink or other residue on the nib it might be best to replace them or use them for sketching only. I made a 'Short' on how to clean nibs, which was not very detailed, though I am working on a Blog full of dip pen info, be sure to subscribe to my monthly newsletter for updates on that and special offers 🙂

Which magnifying glass do you recommend? 5x? 10x?
@longstrideillustration
@longstrideillustration 10 месяцев назад
I'm not sure, it depends on your eyesight, lighting in the space that you work in, and how many hours of usage. I use a magnifying lamp by YOUKOYI that is 5x, I think 10x would make me dizzy. You can find the supplies that I use on my website: longstrideillustration.com/faq/
