Clear and concise instructions in less than 3 minutes gets over a million views whereas the 19 minute tutorial struggles to get 50k views! You don’t have to be redundant when your clear and concise! I applaud this video wholeheartedly!
Thank you David! We try to make all of our videos clear and concise. Some of our appliance repair videos get longer like this one on replacing a stove element but that is due to the variation in models and the time that is needed to test it with a multimeter: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GaW7uAHkPQI.html
There’s also no money in that. Every RU-vid video went over eight minutes when they all started doing in-line video ads at that length. Same reason you see a ton of them go 20 to 30 minutes; creators have learned that’s the sweet spot for people to watch the whole thing
You like this garbage? All she’s doing is regurgitating the instruction manual. Not to mention, she’s pretty bland while doing it. There is no insight, no explanation of anything, and no alternative suggestions, which you can find in a quality, long form video.
I was dreading looking this up because I am in the middle of a plumbing mess. But this was the first video I came across and it made the project so much simpler and clearer. It got right to the point and explained it perfectly.
Thanks for your quick and concise instructional video. Too many people go on and on about repairs and scenarios, when all you need is a straightforward how to guide and you did a great job!
Before using plumbers putty, make sure the plumbers putty is compatible with the material being used on. Most plumbers putty state not to be used on stone products. The putty can have a grit and oil that over time will cause discoloration around the drain. Silicone caulk works just fine and will not discolor around the drain. The newer plumbers putty that are available are more compatible but read the container prior to using.
Yeah it basically just stops the smell from your septic tank from coming up :D Awesome video! I installed a new sink and just forgot the putty after I installed the whole thing. :| Hahaha this helped.
Yep, I forgot the plumber's putty... =o/ Glad this succinct video was around so I didn't have to waste 30 minutes watching a video with tons of fluff to figure that out.
@@AmreSupply A little frustrating at first, then I realized the plumbing had been installed by a southpaw....*sigh*...once I knew that the rest was easy
Hi Philip, thank you for watching. Most drain assemblies come as a package with all the parts included, so the parts listed in this video and the assembly is everything that is needed in the majority of cases.
Hi Jeff, thank you for watching. If your sink has rubber making contact where the plumbers putty is placed then the rubber will be enough to seal against the sink. In most drains the rubber stopper is placed below and plumbers putty is still needed.
Thanks for watching. If your sink drain does not have a pop-up then you should be able to do the installation without removing the p-trap. Removing the p-trap does give more room and can be helpful but not always necessary.
Thanks for watching! Silicone can work in some cases but plumbers putty does a pretty good job evenly filling the space between the drain collar and the sink.
Hi Alyssa, thank you for watching. Are you referring to the pop up? We made a separate video for that ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ajvSQPvT1k.html
Thanks for watching Codi! You're right its not too difficult at all, just might take longer if a sink is rusted or in rough shape but in most cases its pretty simple.
Hi Maurice, thank you for watching. In this video the gasket was already inside of the slip nut but you are right it would have been good to mention it for the cases where they are separate.
hi Leigh, thank you for watching! Yes the pop-up installation does add a few more steps. We made a video to show these details: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ajvSQPvT1k.html
Thanks for watching. Teflon tape is not needed in cases where the is a rubber o ring, a compression fitting or plastic threads. In this case the drain is not pressurized, and the rubber stopper when tightened down will provide a good seal. Teflon is used on tapered threads that have a small gap. You can learn more here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9DhL0vet4gk.html
Whoa! Note that the faucet has a pull-up lever for the stopper, but the drain has no such setup. The connection for the lift rod in that setup can prevent the old flange from simply being lifted out of the sink. These "five minutes" are the easy part of a complete drain installation.
MaccDuff thanks for pointing that out, the pull-up lever is purely cosmetic in this case. To see how to replace a pop-up drain then watch this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ajvSQPvT1k.html Hopefully that helps!
Thanks for watching. The rubber gasket can be set in place and just takes a bit of force to remove. You can try to spin it and slowly work its way down the drain pipe.
Hi Pam, If you have running water in your house, but no water coming from your bathroom sink, then its likely that the shutoff valves are closed under that sink. Check below the sink, you will 2 supply lines that lead into the faucet, one for hot and one for cold. There should be a small valve on each.
A few remarks here. Why disconnect the P trap if your removing and installing the drain from the top? You should explain in which cases it's necessary or not to use a plastic seal ring between the drain pipe and the P trap. And lastly, you are using your pliers on reverse when removing the P trap.
Thank you 5acesdown for sharing your thoughts. You are right, the P trap doesn't always need to be disconnected for drains that install from the top, but since some drains aren't a single piece and there is some variation in each sink, we included the P trap removal.
as a plumber i have a complaint you should NEVER use Channel locks on chrome 1) it scratches the brass and will make it easyer to rusty without the chrome be you can early over grip tithe brass and squish the brass
Hi David, thank you for watching. Those are good tips. This drain installation video was one of the first videos that we filmed, and we now put more caveats into the repairs to try to cover some of the options available.
Hi Nick, thank you for watching. We cover that in another video and to help direct people we added a pinned comment several years ago and a note in the description. "If your sink has a pop-up drain, then watch this video instead: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ajvSQPvT1k.html "
Thank you for watching. If your sink has a pop-up drain, then watch this video instead: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5ajvSQPvT1k.html We have pinned a post pointing this out but we know its not always visible to everyone depending on what device they are watching on. That video should cover all the extra steps!
Thanks for watching. This was one of our first vidoes when we created the channel. We have stopped putting the timeframe at the beginning as this can vary. We're just glad that the video helped you out!
@@AmreSupply Just to be clear, it's me being terrible at handywork as to why it took me so long. But the fact that I was even able to do the job was because of this video. Thanks
@@troyb6036 Thanks for watching Troy, the rubber gasket will wedge into the bottom of the sink, so the smaller portion goes up. This was one of our first videos that we created for youtube and we've learned a lot since then. We have made sure to add more details like that in our current videos. I think you'll find our recent videos very detailed yet straightforward and concise.
You're welcome Terry, we're glad to hear that the replacement went smoothly! Now if you found this video helpful and want to support the channel, there are many ways to do so. Considering liking the video, sharing it or even subscribing as every little bit helps. On our channel you'll find animations, troubleshooting and other videos. Excellent. Really helpful, and clearly explained. Also, I see that I can get the kind of U-bend that has a removable clean-out, so I'm going to do that instead of getting a regular non-draining U-bend. Thanks!
That was awesome!! Well done young lady!! I'm putting in a marble sink with no fixtures and had no idea how to or where to start..but that was simple enough! Many thanks!!! I subscribed because of this video...
You are most welcome, and thank you for subscribing! We're glad this video helped get you started! There are a lot of repairs that are quite simple once you see it taken apart. Hopefully you find some of our other videos helpful too!
Thanks for watching. You are right that plumber's putty should not be placed directly on a rubber gasket or seal. In this case the chance of the oils migrating down and deteriorating the gasket below the sink is quite low.
Thanks for watching. Video chats are not something that we offer. The p-trap might need to be shifted, or in some cases you might need to install a different drain pipe. We have a video on how to glue ABS pipe that can help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pYQVUWPR85E.html
This thing says it’s easy and it takes five minutes. That’s bull crap, it’s easy and takes a half an hour unless something breaks or something won’t come apart or something won’t go together.
Thank you for sharing Bob. You're right that it might take longer than 5 min, every set up is different and when parts are rusty or old it can definitely slow things down. We have stopped putting the estimated time on recent videos for that reason. Hopefully you still found the visuals helpful.
god damn thanks. i saw so many nerd vids that made this so much more complicated than it should be. just watch this video if you're doing this. piece of cake. thanks!
Why can’t all videos be this simple and to the point. Notice she didn’t waste the first 5 minutes talking gibberish!!!! She also didn’t waste valuable time saying “ as you can see” or other waste of words or time. Thanks Stephani!!
You're welcome and thank you for sharing your thoughts. This is a big compliment to our team as we try to keep all of our videos informative while being concise, without all the extra fluff. Hopefully you find some of our other videos helpful as well!
Thank you. She does an amazing job at presenting this! Is she for hire? 🙂Wish I had watched this before. I tried to do it myself. Didn't know about the plumber's putty and my drain is leaking. Friends suggested pipe dope around the threads where the lower nut will tighten on Don't know if that's required.
Thanks for watching, we're glad that you found it helpful. In this case it is the rubber gasket that does the sealing. As long as the rubber is pressed tightly up against the drain, you should get a good seal. Pipe dope (pipe joint compound) and thread seal tape is meant for tapered pipe fittings that do not use a gasket. If you are curious you can learn more about how this works here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a0jFPj4W8bY.html
great work! thanks for this... it's all so simple. what if they taught this, anything useful really, in the dumbing down schools!!! it would be a different world. cancel the great reset! get useful people!!! cheers Stephany!!
Thanks Stephany! My original kit that came with the sink didn't need plumbers putty as it had a custom gasket (and never leaked). The new kit kept leaking without it and wasn't compatible with the original custom gasket. Thanks for the tip!
Great instructions! For me, Step 2 was time consuming. I could not get the nut off the pipe, it just spun the whole drain assembly around. Trip to big box store to get channel locks. That didn't help, so I got under the sink with a pipe wrench (knowing that was the end of the old piping) and the channel locks which slipped off the .25" thick nut constantly. After 15 minutes of this, got out from under the sink and tried reaching under and managing the tools by feel. Nope. Back under the sink, re-positioned wrench and channel locks a few more times until I got them both engaged. That sucker was on there TIGHT! Once it budged, I knew that was the end of the roadblock. It took over an hour. Next, the new drain assembly was an inch shy of the P trap- back to big box store for a 6" inch extension in PVC of course. The other five minutes of the job was easy. Thanks so much for this video.
Thank you for watching and for sharing your experience. We realize that there are some factors that can make each installation a bit more difficult. This was one of our first videos we filmed so if we do an update we'll be sure to cover more of the unexpected / tricky scenarios like yours.
You made pushing that gasket up look easy, mine took 10 mins to force up bit by it. In the end its leaking water through it too (reinstalled same used stuff after a disassembly and cleaning a decaying assembly) Guess I need a new assembly
This is a very quick and clear video on how to do this repair. But, there's nothing mentioned about lining up the overflow drain in the new sink drain with the overflow in the sink.
Plumber putty is ok only if there is no rubber seal where you put it. Putty damage rubber seal on the long run. You video is ok as the top flange do not have this rubber seal, but some assemblies does.
Thank you, we're glad that you found it helpful. You are right that there can be some variation between kits and other repair parts so it never hurts to double check with measurements with your existing parts.
Can this be done for under the kitchen sink as well? Not the side with garbage disposal the other water pipe side? Just noticed a small hole after some dish washing. I noticed it was a bit wet and when I turned I water on I saw more like spray or light mist really than like a leak or drip. But this looks like that side of the sink but the video does say bathroom. Man I hope this isn't too dumb sounding. Just a mama trying to be a handy mama right now and figure out this little problem.
Hi Nina, thank you for watching. If the leak is on the water supply lines then you can always check the connections or replace the lines. If you have flexible supply lines then you can just swap out the lines for new ones. If you have copper pipes a pinhole leak implies that there is some corrosion in the pipes and in that case it would be good to swap them out for new ones.
Thanks, this helped a lot. I am still trying to figure out if there is anything that prevents the P-trap from coming off of the end of the drain assembly.
Thanks for watching. The order of the steps might differ depending on what exact setup you have, if it's a basic drain or one with a pop up. The drain assembly should lift up from the p=trap once the slip nut is loosened and the p-trap can be unscrewed and lowered in any case.
Thanks for watching. Plumber's putty is an oil based putty and it takes years to "dry" completely. As long as you apply the putty and wipe off the excess it will do it's job. As for the p-trap, the "clean out" feature what sets it apart from other traps: www.amresupply.com/part/602367-1-1-4-inch-ABS-P-TRAP-CL
