How to Install a Bathtub Drain | Brass Tub Drain for Clawfoot Tub

Whether you have an old clawfoot tub or a modern freestanding bathtub, the concept of drain installation is similar for both bathtubs. What Is different is the room you have with which to work.

The installation of the bathtub drain is comprised of measuring and cutting the waste tube and overflow tube and inserting those pieces into the 3-way "t". with gaskets secure between tubes and tub, from inside the tub the waste strainer and overflow cover plate are attached.
The process to install a bathtub drain is fairly straight forward. Installing the bath tub drain just takes some time to precisely measure and align all the parts. The bath tub plumbing layout is basically the same for the vast majority of tubs because most tubs have a drain and an overflow which route the water down the drain.
Most bath tub drain kits come with drain tubes which are longer and must be cut to size to fit. With some simple tools, the bathtub drain installation is something a DIY'er can take on with some knowledge.

For future reference put needle nose pliers into the drain and use a screwdriver for the leverage to tighten it

Hey Cgh, I don’t think we have a video specifically for that. But you are looking for a compression fitting. The bottom piece is a pvc pipe with a thread male fitting on top which would accept a female compression nut. Into that compression nut would go the top drain / waste pipe. If you go to a big box home store, just describe what you are trying to do and they easily be able to help you. A smaller similar example is a kitchen or bathroom drain pipe going into the p-trap. The drain pipe is connected to the p-trap in much the same way. Hope that helps. Thx for watching!

How do you replace an old strainer basket? Esp if it's been glued in?

Hey Katie, The strainer basket ( kitchen ) is typically screwed in. The ‘glue’ like substance between the bottom of the strainer and the sink is likely either plumbers putty ( kind of like play dough ) or silicon. Under the sink, the other side of the strainer basket has a large nut that needs to be unscrewed from the threads of the neck of the strainer. Once the nut has been removed you can try to separate the seal between the strainer basket and the sink. I would try to cut the substance with a box cutter blade. Maybe a thin screwdriver could help pry them apart - could also scratch the stainless. Hopefully no one used an adhesive on the strainer. Unlikely. With the nut removed, pushing up on the strainer from underneath may help. Hope that helps. Thx for watching!

Yeah what about the leak below😂 I'm literally a plumber and these are notorious for leaking at the gap below at the 90° tub shoe. Better check it in-triplicate.

My clawfoot tub the overflow is very very low to the rub it's basically at the bottom and the water also comes out of the over flow...how do I fix this? I want to over flow higher up and a actual faucet because there's no kit that comes like mine...

Sorry. Never faced that issue. I’d look for overflow adapters or overflow covers and see what comes up?
