How to install a Bontrager Duotrap S on a Trek FX Aluminum Frame

In this video I will be installing a Bontrager Duotrap S Wheel speed and Cadence sensor onto a 2020 Trek FX 3 bike. The cadence sensor wouldn't work with my bike no matter which magnet I used. I assume the metal frame interfered with the sensor too much and that it will work better with a carbon frame than an alloy frame. If you only want a wheel speed sensor then this may not be a problem for you.
This sensor will connect to phones and head units via Bluetooth or ANT+. In this video I connect it to my phone via Bluetooth. I did not connect it to an ANT+ device.
The sensor installs with a single 2.5mm hex screw that should be torqued to 2.5nm. The screw installs on 1 side of the sensor and if overtightened could lead to damage as well as it starts to cause the sensor to sit int he wrong spot. I feel they could have done a better design and used 2 screws to make the sensor more secure.
The sensor must be removed in order to change the battery.
The sensor can be installed without removing the rear wheel if you take your time.
The app that I tested with is "Ride with GPS" play.google.co...

Good video. Just installed on my 2022 FX3. Some additional tips, relating to some struggles I had. * The LEDs only flash 10 times (mentioned in manual), after that they stop flashing. Don't mistake this for "not working". * Should be obvious but cadence sensor goes on LEFT crank (closest to DuoTrap module), and left pedal has REVERSE thread (!). * I could not remove my pedal with 6mm hex key. Too tight. Open end wrench worked better for me. * My speed magnet included a rubber washer/gasket which is not shown in this video or in instructions. Be careful when unscrewing magnet, mine fell out. * For my 2022 FX3, I used middle sized crank band, and did *not* require the rubber shim like some others here mentioned (but I'm keeping it in case I need it in future). * As of April 2022, this sensor paired fine in Wahoo Fitness App on iOS. Cadence and speed working. This sensor does not show up in normal iOS bluetooth settings. * I tried to install without removing the wheel, big mistake. I stripped the tiny 2.5mm hex screw. Take the few extra minutes and take the wheel off and do it right.

I just installed mine and both speed/cadence sensor work both fine through my aluminium frame. I do have to mention that I used the additional rubber to get the cadence sensor to work 100% of the time, hopefully you got it to work

Hi, you mean the additional rubber gasket on minute 2:22 (that's supposedly is just for carbon frames)???

@@weralio not that Rubber, but another little thinner rubber seal. That fixes the misalignment

On FX 3 Disc 2023 bikes the Duotrap does not hold properly, moving even with the correct tightening of the screw. You have the same issue?

Worked pefect for me on an FX3... magnet was in medium rubber band already and close to pedal makes it line up. Make sure the magnet is in the band and follow the instructions and it was easy.

Try the additional spacer for the cadence sensor which comes with the set. I had the same problem, but with the middle sized magnet and the small rubber spacer the cadence was picked up. Good luck, curious if it works out for you.

Odd that your cadence sensor isn't working because mine does on my aluminum framed FX-4. In the video at 5:05 you show it on the crank arm but did you move it up further afterwards? In the video is not the right location for that magnet. It needs to be moved at least another 1cm (about 1/2 inch) in order for it to work. Mine was a couple years ago but I remember it being a little finicky to find the right spot, but once you do it stays there nicely.

It could be that the magnet inside the cadence sensor is the wrong direction? My cadence sensor on the medium band wasn't working. I opened up the flap and turned the magnet around and it started registering.

@@serpentvert Odd? I didn't know that it mattered, but the one in the video looks off in the sense that it's too far from the sensor.

@@jimdent351 Yeah I think you are right. The direction of the magnet prob doesn't matter otherwise there would be some mention of it in the instructions. I agree with you too about the distance of the band from the centre. I had to put the medium size cadence sensor at 155mm for it to read on my Al frame when the instructions say 135mm for Al and 145mm for carbon frames.

On a Trek FX 2, I installed the magnet in the large bracket. For reference, the clearance between the large bracket and the frame is ~3-4mm. The small(medium size) bracket with the spacer didn’t give a consistent signal.

It could be that the cadence magnet is too far from the sensor, and the aluminum frame acts as an additional barrier...

I downloaded the Ride with GPS app. At 6:26 run time in your video ... how did you get to that screen to check that the sensors are working? I can't seem to figure it out how do you get that screen?

If you need to use the big additional rubber, you have to take out the magnet from the medium size rubber, only the small and medium come with magnets inside.

I have the same problem with the cadence sensor. When the magnet in on the crank arm it should be aligned with the sensor but this isn't possible.

I'm confused, just opened up my Bont. Elite computer, found out it doesn't come with the "antenna and or sensor"..does that mean it does not use a magnet on the wheel and a sensor, or is an antenna an extra choice for the duotrap system..I'm getting a friggin' headache..they should have clearly stated that it does not come with everything needed to install it! I have the Bont. normal "ridetime" not "elite" on my other bike, thus why I thought the wheel sensor was missing from the package.

I have a Trek FX4 Disc (aluminum frame) with Duotrap S and using a Bontrager RIDEtime elite computer and both speed and cadence sensors work perfectly. I notice the band on mine is very close to the pedal and therefore closer to the Duotrap S in case that helps anyone.

@@ovatsugn I use only the Ridetime computer and do not pair with my phone, however it seems likely one could do that.

I just got a bike trainer for my trek fx 2 and wanted to have a way to track miles. Does this do that or just the speed?

Yes. Since it is able to track speed, any head unit (or watch) will be able to calculate distance using speed and time.

The cadence sensor works for me. However, the speed sensor does not work. I do not get to see a red light. Does anyone have a solution?

Both sensors work perfectly with me. But I am not connecting to my phone. I use bike computer Mio Cyclo 215. It is connecting via ANT+. The installation is very easy. Maybe you have an installation issue or problem with your app.

I have the same problem with my cadence sensor on my Duo trap S. My speed sensor seems to work but the cadence sensor is a constant 0rpm! Does anyone know why?

The solution for the cadence sensor is to remove the magnet from the tire and attach it to the point where the pedal connects to the crankset.

@@nightbrother42 I did not attempt to install it on the other pedal as the instructions state: "Remove the pedal and install the small cadence magnet on nondrive side crank arm with the thick side near the chainstay"

Really? Mine was a piece of cake. It helps if you use a T handle allen key with the ball end. That way it's long enough that you don't need to remove the wheel. My challenge was getting off the peddle to install the cadence magnet because I was trying to turn it in the wrong direction. lol

I do believe you installed the cadence sensor on the wrong pedal. My DuoTrap was installed at the Trek dealer when I bought the bike and it is on the left crank (non sprocket) side. I have two Trek bikes and the cadence sensor is on the left pedal on both bikes.

It was installed on the correct side (non-drive crank). The angle in the video is a little unclear, but because you can see the drive gear guard side facing up and not the teeth of the drive gear that means that the pedal that I was accessing was the left side pedal.

@@gftgrill Okay, BTW my Domane and my Dual Sport 2 are both aluminum frames. I have occasionally had some issues with my cadence sensor not being picked up and have had to let my Garmin search for them to solve the problem.

Try bringing the cadence sensor lower, or towards the cranks...I believe it has to be a certain distance along the crank arm. I just purchased this for my Domane SL6 and I think I'll just use my Garmin speed sensor 2 and cadence instead...lol.

I did make sure to align the magnet with the sensor before I recorded the test. I took all 3 magnets and tested it with my hand. Even when pressed directly against the frame, none of them would trigger the sensor. I took it back out of the frame and just waved the magnet in front of the sensor it started to light up .

I have similar problem with cadence sensor on my carbon domane slr7. Even with small cadence band if I turn it with a thick side facing chainstay I can not move it close enough to the sensor, cause it starts touching the chainstay with every pedal round. So, I have to move it a bit closer to the chain ring, and then it does not always connect to the sensor, showing too low cadence as a result.

@@johnnydayterthehappypainte3902 no, it does not have any GPS chips in it to calculate distance. You need an app to track miles and distance. This will calculate how fast you're pedaling and how fast your wheel is moving.

It will if you buy the Bontrager computer to pair it to. Odd that it doesn't with whatever app he's using on his phone. My computer and wheel sensor came as a kit, or they could be purchased separately. I do know, however, that I had to enter the wheel size into the computer in order for it to accurately calculate distance. Hope that helps

The cadence sensor does work on the alloy frame bikes. He just has it in the wrong spot. He needs to move it about 1/2 inch higher up the crank arm

I took mine in for the recall aleady. I received Wellgo C157 as replacement pedals. I don't think I like them as much as the flat pedals that were on there. Also, the store didn't know anything about the 20 dollar credit that was mentioned in the recall email, so I'm still waiting for more information on that.
