For people wonderign why he changed the tablesaw: The old dewalt is a brushed motor - extremely noisy as well as less power efficient - it's a "site saw" designed for occasional use. The new saw is designed for regular work and induction motors are considerably quieter and more efficient with both electric usage and power delivery - brushed motors can stop altogether when even medium load as they only have (usually) 2 points of contact for the "brushes" (carbon switches) and the spinning stator of the motor, through which to deliver power to the blade. An induction motor has a continuous ring around the stator making for a much smoother and stronger power delivery.

Looks like a really nice table saw. I'm sure it is a welcome upgrade to the portable jobsite saw. Excellent work on the modifications. This work station is a thing of beauty!

This is the mother of all workbench.

In the US from 1950-1970, you could buy a cast-iron saw with a narrow table and short fence rails; extension wings and long fence rails for sheet-goods and a superior rip-fence were available as upgrades not as standard features forced upon the customer. Axminster is following that retro base-model-with-upgrade-path approach. Axminster is also including a feature that normally doesn't appear on saws priced under $2,000. Its trunnions are mounted to the cabinet not bolted to the table top. Aligning blade with miter slots can be very difficult when the motor is hanging from the table top. And it is very compact! The Axminster puts an internal induction motor in a bench-top cabinet! There's nothing like it in the US today. When we are buying a new saw (to get one with a riving knife) our choice is between lightweight portable saws that don't want to stay aligned (if you can even get them aligned) and big saws with very wide rails optimized for sheet goods.

I have AW254ts; the model that came before the one you have. It is the same saw but with different colors. I also upgraded from dewalt and I never looked back :) One upgrade I did on my saw is gluing small (ca 5mm in diameter) neodymian magnet in the slot for the fence handle and that way it doesn't close on itself when I am trying to fine tune the cut.

Hello Suso, your workbench has reached such a level that it is more like a piece of art now!! Interesting little saw. My dream saw would be a jobsite saw with an induction motor as I don't care much about the flatness of the aluminum top (mine is terrible, same Dewalt as yours). Anyway, I digress. Awesome job as usual, looking forward to watching your video comparing the two saws.

It will be very interesting to see what further changes or upgrades you do to this saw, i have the axminster ac216 ts which is the same as yours. I have a couple of issues with my saw it will be interesting to see if yours has them as time goes on, on a funny note i suspect axminster will be spitting feathers with your walk through on how to fit dado blades by filing spindle down.As always very informative and very well explained looking forward to part 2.

Again your ingenuity comes through. I do understand the advantage of a cast iron top. My saw has an aluminum one and I have regretted that almost from day one but it was a gift. I am a little confused by the mods you had to make to the rails and fence. I am sure it will all clear up before you're done.

You could use strong tarp, leather or some other flexible material to cover the bottom of the saw. For better dust extraction.. Well done..Greets from Germany

Paoson 0:00:02 to 0:00:05 - I would love it if you would do a video on how to effectively make a "pop-up" table. Many of us are working out of a garage, and learning how to make a level pop-up table top like this would be amazing for many of us!

Happy to hear that some of you have good feedback with this axminster cast iron table. I had the previous version AC254TS that was red but mechanically they didn't change evena a screw. I had a really bad experience with this product: 1. Cast Iron top not flat 2. Bad tolerances on the T-Tracks 3. Really bad extension panels on the side and back 3. Mechanical vibration on the riving knife For the last listed problem, I had to send it back two times and the technical team didn't find the root cause. Probably there is some eccentricity on the motor shaft. My overall opinion is that the product is good for noise reduction but it is not really an upgrade respect to some really decent job site table saw like the Dewalt. It is manufactured in China so the Quality of the product can be very variable from time to time. Maybe I got two times a bad piece :( At the end I finished buying the DWE7492 as a replacement. At least I can say that the Axminster support is great.

Great project! How is the dust collection and noise level with the new saw? Also I noticed it's 50Hz, any idea if the motor is compatible with 60Hz or if there are additional options available for US power frequency? I haven't seen many bench top cast iron options out there. Cheers!

Hi, great videos first and foremost! I am very interested in your workbench, and will probably try to build one in 2023. But I'll need to modify mine for the slightly smaller Axminster 216 model saw. So, I'll be looking to purchase your plans at some point in the near future. Do you by any chance intend on creating a modified set of plans for the Axminster saw? If not, any considerations not mentioned in this video on things not mentioned?

Where did you get the longer fence rail from? I have decided the quieter more efficient motor wins over the DeWalt, but i really need the 600mm+ cutting capacity.

Will you not miss the extra power (500W) of the dewalt? I had bought the dewalt 7492 based on your excellent table design that I'm starting at the moment. I do wish I'd shopped around a little more for something with a cast iron top, especially as I live very near an axminster store and this saw with the Black Friday discount is currently cheaper than what I paid for the 7492...on the other hand the rack and pinion fence system on the dewalt, once calibrated, is really excellent, I'd probably only change it for an Incra system which is a very expensive upgrade. The other thing was the Dado blade which the 7492 can take, it never would have occurred to me to modify the axminster machine to fit one! Do you find the cast iron top and induction motor to be a significant upgrade? I increasingly think Axminster or Felder or someone like that are going to make their own version of your table. Combination type machines/benches are so much more convenient for most hobby woodworkers than the current offerings, even the felder/hammer combination machines aren't really designed in a way that can be operated without having 360 degree access, which is hard to get in a small 1 garage workshop.

Hi Suso, First my compliments, love your workbench series. I have also ordered the AW254TS and it arrived today. For your informatieontsluiting, you decided not to mount the baseplate, because of the bulge on the outside. But the bulge should be on the inside. See figure 08 at page 9 of the manual. I realize that this is an entree level cast iron saw. But is your cast iron plate flat? Mine has a bow downwards towards the middle. The difference is almost 1mm.

I didn't understand why you decided to chance the table saw. The other one didn't work properly? Did you think this could work better than that Dewalt table saw on this workbench?

Concerning your mobile workbench with the cast iron saw and router table - could a portable miter roll stand be added/connected to the end of the bench and use the same track guides and top for cuts? Amazing work, but why not just upgrade to an actual cabinet saw? A cabinet saw would require less modification, would keep its warranty, would fit a dado stack without having to modify the arbor, and would overall probably cost about the same as what you’ve spent here…

Wait, when you filed down the end of the axle to use the dado blades, didn't that change the center of your single blade? Wouldn't your zero clearance plates and all the other changes you made be different now?
