It makes me chuckle every time Jeff. I do the same thing. Although, I haven't tried using the tape measure as a hammer yet I don't think. Used to drive my father nuts. He'd say "right tool for the job damnit son". Because those first years I was using his tools mostly, lol. Just reminded me of some good times of DIY with the "Old man", I sure miss him. I'm sure you have these good times with your boys as well. Thanks Jeff!

I learned the word 'mortise'. This gives me a lot of confidence for replacing a door - thanks, Jeff. One recommendation I learned from a police department is to replace the screws that go in the strike plate (the plates that go into the mortise) is to use 3- or 4-inch screws (not the 1-inch screws they give in the lock kit) so that it goes to the studs. The longer screws make it harder to kick the door in if the strike plates bite into some more wood (or, as you've said in other videos, just in case you have a family of door slammers that also like to push up hard against the doors when they're carrying a load of groceries)... hee hee.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
Cheers Jason.! LOL the family of door slammers....is that a reference to another one of my videos?
@jasonbengel
@jasonbengel 5 лет назад
@@HomeRenoVisionDIY Yes, it is -- I think it's a reference to a basement video where you show three different methods to put in a pre-framed door ("Good, Best, and super-fast"). As you went through the pros/cons, for one of the methods, you said, "This will work great, unless you live in a family of door slammers." Your list of quotables ("Jeffisms") is increasing, though I don't think I'll wear a t-shirt with 6:30 on it quite yet!

Very good, the way you show it give the impression it's quite easy, thank you ! I am not sure about buying the cheapest lock, it's still the entry door of your home.

Why not use longer screws for the strike plates? Some 3"-4" screws should hit the jack stud and give a much better chance of a standing up against a kick attack on the door. As always, great content. Keep it coming!

It is suggested also to get some screws through the door frame into the wall where the deadbolt is to strenghten the hold. Of course you need to ad wood between frame and wall.
@HomeRenoVisionDIY

regardless, the sheer strength of those screws will not keep someone form kicking in a door. A properly trained guard dog or a 12 gauge shotgun is more effective.

Jeff, do you ever run any longer screws into the studs on the latch plate of the deadbolt on the door frame? I'm under the impression that there'd be a little bit better security with those longer screws going through more wood. Also, your tip about removing one of the handles is going to save me some grief when I'm installing 12 lever hardware sets in my current renovation this week; that was worth the price of admission alone! Top notch video as always, Jefe. Question: Have you ever installed the Defiant motion detector light system? I did my absolute best caulking that thing, and water still somehow got inside and ruined it :(twice): Customer service was not too nice about it, and blamed my poor caulk job. A pro-installation might make for an excellent video - does the farmhouse need motion detection?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY

Did the water get in the box or the fixture?
@davidozog7549
@davidozog7549 5 лет назад
That's the million dollar question. I would hope it didn't get into the box, and I can't imagine a reasonable scenario where that could have happened (except a bad caulk job). The Defiant guy said the water had to come from behind my caulk line because it's literally impossible to come through the fixture side even when submerged in water. I haven't actually opened it up yet to diagnose though. If you're dying to know, maybe I can prioritize this ;)

Off the subject but do you have any advice or old video on making a pebble rock sitting area?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
advice yes, good drainage, great landscape cloth underneath and use a blower to keep organics from building up so you don't get plants growing in your rocks. Cheers!

That rigid drill doesn’t look too strong...actually seems really weak. How does it compare to your dewalt?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
Around 70% power. feels good in the hands however and probably more than enough for most homeowners. Cheers!

What about the Wifi enables keyless lock that uses the smartphone to open. Are they reliable?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
Not sure if reliability is the biggest concern. Like with all things mechanical it is always best to have a key on you. For me I like the option to give out a code for other folks to have access without having keys floating around the city. The codes can be changed at any time.

Makes sense to have more control with a key and numbers.

OK my OCD was triggered! The outside of the Deadbolt looked great, but the inside of the deadbolt is off by 1/16" - 1/8". It seems I have been watching your videos too long!!! hahaha As for all the Prego parts of the comments, I won't comment, but they were funny!!! Does that mean I commented on them??

Good job, but insecure. You should use 3-4 inch screws through striker so it lands on the joist next to it. With those 1" screws all holding is the door jamb which a few well placed kicks will open in seconds...
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
A few well placed kicks and those long screws will shear anyway. Cheers. Buy a good shotgun!
