I agree! We debated about whether to get an enclosure due to the extra cost and the space it takes up but we are definitely glad we did !

Thank you for watching! I can’t say how large the battery must be but I have been using the same Duracell SL34M AGM since I first installed the generator and have never had a problem with it. The battery is dedicated to starting the generator and is recharged by the generator. It is not hooked up to a battery charger.

floating systems, would this cause a reverse polarity light? Or would that be neutral ground bonding issue at the Gen?

That’s a good question that unfortunately I don’t know the answer to. I occasionally get a reverse polarity light when running the generator but it is intermittent and I have yet to discover the cause.

Hey Ron, id like to ask a small favor. I'm considering the Phasor 8kw for my trawler also. I'd like to know the sound db level in the salon and master stateroom. Would you be willing to download a sound db meter to your phone and measure the db's in the salon and master stateroom then post the results. Thanks in advance.

@CruisingThisOldBoat 3 месяца назад
Ok - I finally got a chance to perform the sound checks. I first did a base sound level test without the generator running. However, my windows were open (because it’s HOT! 😉) so there was sound from the wind and small boat traffic. I then checked with the generator running. I also tested with the air conditioners on but saw no appreciable difference. The sound levels were in a constant state of movement so I tried to pick what seemed to be the normal level. Salon: off - 41db. On - 57db Master Stateroom: off - 38db. On - 63db V-Berth: off - 42db. On - 63db Hope this helps.

@@CruisingThisOldBoat Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Yes, so very helpful. Right now my artifact of a generator puts out a whopping 72 db in the main cabin. The original sound box was worthless, so i built a sound attenuation chamber in the engine room that reduced the sound by only 8db. The Phasor with its sound box will fit inside my chamber, so I'm hoping to experience no more than 55db in the main salon based on your numbers. That would be pure bliss. Again, many thanks.

We love the generator!! It’s still quiet and runs great. I had to fiddle with a hose that I thought was too close to the belt and I was concerned it might wear through the hose but once I did that it has remained clear since. We have had no repairs - only routine maintenance. I drilled one of the holes in the engine pan a little larger and ran a hose from the oil drain that I just leave there and it makes oil changes simple as pie - I eventually added the remote harness so we can start and stop it from the salon. It only takes about .45 gph on average to run. I would definitely recommend the genny

Hello Sir, sorry for one more question: From your video, the built in fan on the top, I didn't see any fan wires. Does the fan have no wires? How does it work? Is it convenient for you to check the fan brand and model for me? I want to buy one and install it by myself if the final brand I choose don't provide. Many thanks!
@CruisingThisOldBoat
@CruisingThisOldBoat Год назад
The fan does have wires. They are hidden by the front left panel so they don’t show up in the video. They have enough slack in them to allow me to slide the top panel to the side for maintenance without having to disconnect anything. I am underway right now but first chance I get I will see if I can get a model number for you.

May I know feedback of this brand generator? Want to buy a new genny. I'm just worried about the built in fan on the top, maybe the reliability is not good because of the corrosion and heat air. Second, even if the fan is broken, there is no alarm prompt, I need to check regularly from time to time, this is not friendly. Last, exhaust fan is also a source of noise, although it maybe not very loud. I've also checked other brands, like Onan, Kohler, Northern Lights, they all don't have any exhaust fan. BUT this is also very very weird, how can the genny direct the hot air out of the enclosure without exhaust fan? THANKS!
@CruisingThisOldBoat
@CruisingThisOldBoat Год назад
I never thought about a fan failure. Those types of fans usually run reliably for many years but I honestly don’t know what would happen if it failed. The generator does have an overtemp protection which I can state works very well. As far as fan noise, I never hear the fan. It is much quieter than the generator itself, which is pretty quiet. All in all I am very happy with the generator. It runs reliably and burns less than 1/2 gallon per hour. Although I have yet to need any repairs, I like the fact that I can buy every part at a local auto parts store (except for marinized parts). I also like the fact that it has no printed circuit boards which is usually the highest failure point on a generator. My only complaints deal with a little added difficulty in maintenance. You have to cut the zinc in half before use which is a pain so I just cut a bunch at one time. Also, it is almost impossible to see the water level and I have to use a mirror to do so but that is probably more of an issue of where it is located on my boat. I would definitely recommend the generator and if I had to replace another generator I would buy the same thing again. I would strongly recommend that you get a remote panel with it. I didn’t get one at first but it is sooo much easier to use the generator with a remote panel.

@enuopower5567 Год назад
@@CruisingThisOldBoat Many thanks for your detailed information and suggestion, that is very useful for me! But still a few points of doubt, 1 - Follow the principle of one more part and one more failure rate. I still felt that having an extra fan will reduce the overall generator reliability. You never know when the fan will dead and if dead, you can only wait the generator end temp. rise which cause voltage increase and finally shut down because of high voltage alarm! The "overtemp protection" you mentioned I guess is "engine coolant temp protection", that will not work efficiently. Engine temp can still keep well even if generator end temp. rise. Onan, Kohler, NL don't have the extra exhaust fan which that I want, but the problem is that I don't think they have the good air circulation, most heated air from generator end will be trapped inside of the enclosure, which cause the genny cannot run for a long time, unless you remove the doors. I have no idea what they designed it for, personally, at least one exhaust fan is necessary to enhance air circulation! But fan may have quality problem, this maybe the point of contradiction! 2 - Between the drip pan and deck, I think should install another four anti-vibration mountings to avoid the vibration of the genny from being transmitted to the hull, this may let the genny feel more quieter. 3 - Remote panel is necessary. But on genny body, a control panel with alarm symbols or alarm codes is also needed. I have no idea that how do you know the reason why the genny alarmed and shut down, high coolant temp? low oil pressure? over speed? Because from our genny, seems only two switches and a timer, when you repair, genny alarm an d shuts down, you have to go to the remote panel to check the alarm code, that is not friendly. Generator body control panel should also have such monitoring function. 4 - The problem you mentioned Zinc replacement which seems a bit similar to Onan's Zinc that I have replaced before, not so difficult just remember to inspect periodically is okay. But I don't what your meaning of "water level"? You mean you have to periodically to check the genny below or above the seawater line? How about to install an siphon breaker? It's just some personal thoughts, it maybe not reasonable, wish to discuss together. Thanks!

@@enuopower5567 - I will try to address your questions as best I can. 1). As I stated previously, I don’t know what would happen if the fan quit. But I guess a comparison would be that if Onan and the others don’t have a fan to begin with, then I would guess it would not be catastrophic if the fan quit on the Phasor. But that is something you could discuss with the company (they were very helpful when I called with questions). 2) I’m with you on this one ! The more you can isolate a vibration the better. Unfortunately there is no room on my boat to add extra mounts as I barely have enough headroom to take the top off as it is. I say if you have the space then do it but if you don’t have space then I can attest that this generator is very quiet. We routinely run it while watching TV. After awhile you forget it is running. 3). I’m pretty sure Phasor sells a remote panel that has alarm and/or fault indicators. I just went cheap and got the bare minimum panel. 4) Sorry I wasn’t clearer on this. By water level I was referring to the coolant level in the expansion tank. It is something that should be checked regularly. Of course that holds true on any engine. Hope this gives you a little more information to help with your decision. I know how tuff it can be. It took me months to decide and I had pages of information on all the different brands so I could try to compare them.

@@CruisingThisOldBoat Do appreciate for your suggestions, that's really useful for me and let me more and more clear! BTW, would you please give me with some more of your analysis about Onan, Kohler, Northern Lights, I'm sure you've done a lot of research and right now is difficult for me to choose, though I don't think these brands have good air circulation, but they are first-line brands after all. Tks a lot!
@CruisingThisOldBoat
@CruisingThisOldBoat Год назад
@@enuopower5567 - all the brands you listed are quality generators. Unfortunately I didn’t keep my research results once I made the decision to buy a Phasor so I can’t share the specifics of what I found. But I looked at things like fuel consumption, sound levels, cost of parts, availability of repair technicians, original cost of generator, size, etc. I won’t say that Phasor topped the list in every category but it did well enough to impress me. But the thing that put it over the top for me was it’s lack of a printed circuit board. Because they don’t do well in heat or vibration, such things are a top failure item in generators and a costly item to repair or replace. As I said before, except for marinized parts (heat exchanger, water pump, etc) everything on a Phasor can be purchased at a local auto parts store or electric motor shop and repaired or replaced by anyone with general knowledge of engines or electric systems.

May I ask is it wrong to connect neutral to ground?
@CruisingThisOldBoat
@CruisingThisOldBoat Год назад
That can be a complicated question. Eventually, neutral and ground are always connected. But on a boat, you keep the two separate as you don’t want current flowing on the ground line. However, since they must be connected eventually (always at the source which for shore power is on the shore), when it comes to a generator, it is the source so the two must be connected there, but only there. Hope that helps.
@MarineElectrical
@MarineElectrical Год назад
Thanks, I will keep searching, because now I must wire a generator on a yacht and I made it both neutral and ground together, but I start thinking what would happened if some isolation of some equipment got broken...
@CruisingThisOldBoat
@CruisingThisOldBoat Год назад
@@MarineElectrical - that’s the purpose of the ground- if the equipment shorts out it shunts the current to ground rather than just sitting on the chassis of the equipment waiting for you to touch it. When it shorts to ground, it should trip a breaker or fuse to shut off the power to that equipment.
