First on this, because I am not on patreon. That was very good information, best I have ever heard. I did think I have ever seen any thing in the mast before as what you were talking about for the spreader. But next time at the yacht club I will have a look. Can you do one for the boom ?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 5 лет назад
Thanks! I can’t because all our boom lines are external. But the principle is the same.
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 5 лет назад
Also, some masts have “other” setups where that section of collar is reinforced, negating the need for a compression post. This is common on aft swept spreaders since the forces are not opposed evenly. On standard straight out spreaders, you will see a small pipe running across the mast section.

As always, great video! Thank you so much. I wonder if things still are the same with deck stepped masts (ours was). In our case the lines ran internally all the way to the foot of the mast, which effectively was a sort of roller block with, I think, 4 rollers (two on each side) plus two bolts to secure the mast. We only ever replaced the lines in winter every year though, while the mast was laying flat.
@RiggingDoctor

Spreaders have a compression post! Excellent, another piece of the puzzle. Re the mast rake, could you slacken the back stay or tighten the front (depending on the situation) to temporarily straighten the mast?
@mozismobile
@mozismobile 5 лет назад
Yes, but not always past vertical.
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 5 лет назад
When sailing downwind, you can slacken the backstay which will then loosen the headstay. Now the luff of your jib will fill up more and produce even more power downwind. This was really helpful for us on our trade wind sailing, never needed a pole the whole time!

plenty of videos on pulling in a new halyard using the old one,. who needs those.... in our case, we got caught in a sudden gust when dropping the spinnaker, a surprise gybe and a sail in the water being towed behind us.... halyard without a stop knot. GONE .. we are climbing the mast tomorrow, with a few inches of bicycle chain and the magnetic mount for a dial gauge (from a lathe). i'll let you know how we got on

I have seen many struggle with fish tape on a mast in a rack while on the hard. Do you think your towel and magnet trick might work easier for a horizontal mast. I have not tried it yet but maybe a magnet on the end of a messenger line and a towel/magnet outside to drag the messenger through. I don’t know if the friction of 55 feet of mast might be too great but I will try it out as soon as the ice and snow melts away.

Excellent topic, been looking for a long time..kinda hard to understand details but helps...question , how does the leafing chain goes thru block inside mast for spreaders ?..
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 3 года назад
At the spreaders, there is a compression post that runs across the mast. It’s important that the halyard lay in front of them for the jib halyard or behind it for the main halyard. The magnets will help you pull the chain to the correct side through the aluminum of the mast. The block at the top of the mast where the halyard goes in is easy to do because as you push the chain in, it’s weight will take over and begin to pull the rest of the chain in and down the mast.
@rnunezc.4575
@rnunezc.4575 3 года назад
@@RiggingDoctor thank you for your time . Still for me is not thoroughly clear but kinda get the idea...so I need to come down with magnets out side mast pulling attracting lead to correct side on block area of spreaders right...?...
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 3 года назад
Yes, so as you come down, you guide the chain down the inside of the mast with the magnet.

@@RiggingDoctor Thank you again for your answers and time I don't have the problem yet but I wonder how that was done in the event. I ve always just had outside halyards but now I am working on a inside lines rig and recently did a change of ends of main halyard ..then I knew if you loose it off mast the work would be very hard to get it back inside and all the way out the slots etc...thank you!..cheers. if you ever come to Ecuador let me know..

Are halyard shackles even necessary? I was thinking about just using a knot of some kind to tie the halyard to the eyelet on the sail.
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 2 года назад
The knot of choice is called a Halyard Knot.
@WojciechP915

@@RiggingDoctor I am going to try this. My boat was set up by previous owner with all of these intricate snap shackles and they appear to have deteriorated. I'd rather just use a knot than rely on some little spring loaded thing.

I prefer to keep a 100 foot electricians fish tape aboard to fix these problems
@jeffgriglack9624
@jeffgriglack9624 5 лет назад
I was going to mention the same thing. You just feed it up through the mast, then go up and attach the new halyard to it, and pull the new halyard back through the mast. It is also useful for, you know, fishing wires through the mast or other part of the boat, and it coils down to a nice size for storage.

@christinec1928
@christinec1928 5 лет назад
Okay, this might be a dumb question ... but why don't you just attach the halyard to the chain? Why the messenger line?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 5 лет назад
Not a dumb question, you can if the halyard is small enough. Did the halyard is big, the weight of the chain might not be enough to pull it down, in this case a thin messenger line plays a key role. If your halyard is on the smaller side, then you can just tie it to the chain and be done as soon as you fish the chain out of the mast. The halyard in the video was 11mm, the messenger line was about 4mm.
@jontybray8514

How do you get to the top of the mast? Don't people usually use the halyard to winch themselves up the mast?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 5 лет назад
I use a gantline attached to another halyard and pull myself up. If you lose all your halyards, you are going to have a really tough time about it!

Another way to not lose a halyard besides a stop knot...always replace them on a regular basis so they don't break. I usually get about 5 years max that I am willing to wait on a seldom used halyard.

we were nervous about stop knots on spinnaker lines, and paid the price. or maybe the fact that the halyard ran through and away saved our bacon... who can tell,
@ericshayer

But how can you go to the top of the mast if you don’t have a halyard?
@RiggingDoctor
@RiggingDoctor 3 года назад
If all your halyards fell out, you need someone that is skilled at climbing trees with a strop! That or a crane to get you up there. Ideally, if you lose a halyard, you still have another one to get you up there to fix it.
@carsonharte
@carsonharte 2 года назад
it would be careless to lose all three... (Main, Genoa and spinnaker), AND the boom topping lift

Wrap a bit of rag around the chain. I typically use fishing line which is very light so I don't need the whole bike chain pulling stuff down :)
