I’ve had good luck with using painters tape on the wall before making my cuts. I will outline the outlet with painters tape before cutting into it. That seems to help with excessive chipping of the plaster. It also helps a lot when you’re hanging things on a plaster wall it prevents plaster chipping

That’s a good tip!

@@radozeman I had some replastering done a few years ago and the guy doing it showed me that trick. Up until then whenever I would hang something I would end up with a nail hole and a crater surrounding it. Lol

We just bought a house that dates to the Great War and it’s still all plaster and lathe. Fortunately no metal that we’ve found so far, but the wiring has been…. how to say this politely… haphazardly _upgraded_ over the years and is kind of a disaster. Time to dust off my handywoman skills!

I didn’t have the wire mesh but I have used a drywall cutout tool with a masonry bit. Cut like butter.

Also I stopped buying the 50-100 packs of throw away blades, the Diablo black ice with the curve on them cut through wood like butter and last WAYY longer

.22 LR should do the job. If not, 556. Cheap and fun!

Have you done this on any of your exterior walls? Any tips? I have an old house too. I think I found a stud on my first try but am not certain. Maybe it’s just another layer of wood? Hard to tell in old houses.

After considering all my options I have decided to impolitely knock out a section between the joists and replace it with drywall using inexpensive hardware.

Get a grinder with a 4 in. Or 4.5 in carbide metal blade. It will cut through the plaster and metal lath no problem. You will have some dust have a shop vac on as you cut to contain the dust. Have Fun my friend…

@@robertcherry4971 How can you get the horizontal cuts with a blade that big? Won't they cut the wall too far?
@loganoioioi3702
@loganoioioi3702 Год назад
@@gburk6114 keep in mind a 4-4.5 inch blade will only be able to cut 1 3/4"-2" given the radius of the blade and the locking not on your grinder
