Here I manufacture a simple piston ring compressor. Not the PRO stuff but an emergency tool that works good enough if you don't have one, or like me when I had it with the cheap one.

That piston is going to slide in a whole lot easier if you let it soak in oil for a bit and treat the bore as well. 😆

The hammering is really the scary part as u don't know if the rings got stuck outside the rim and your hammering is breaking it and possible damage to the piston or cylinder rim. I would sharpen the edge of the band to give the rings a better chance of sliding into the cylinder.

Thank you for the comment! Yes, I agree with you. As an alternative i use to make 3 or 4 small nibs with a plier at the bottom towards the piston which ensure the that the ring is pressed in into the piston properly. Doing one ring at the time gives me better control and I have managed to install many rings without breaking them, so far :) Making the edge to sharp could in worst case make it go in between the piston and the cylinderbore. But the tool is cheap and we can experiment :)

@@ifixmycarmyself2502 One ring at a time is GOOD idea. Amazon has this plier version for $30 ish with multiple bands. It might be worth the $ than your DIY version. I first tried the $9 harbor freight ratcheting version but did not like not knowing the position of the ring gap (0-120-240 degree) would be changed or not. Anyway, thanks for the video.

Thank you new subscriber!!!!🔥🔥🔥 3 QUESTIONS. 1) what gauge sheet metal are you using? 2) what’s the name of the tool you’re using to open up the piston rings. 3) your piston was 35, did you cut it to exactly 35 or did you add extra? AND I LOVE HOW YOU PUT THE LAST TWO RINGS IN. I always put them all in at the same time. YOUR WAY SEEMS WAY EASIER!!! Thanks again!!!!

Welcome! I didn't pay attention to the thickness, maybe a millimeter or so, is that 24 gauge? or close. I bought the tool in 1985 and it says "made in Germany" thats all. No i measure in centimeter, 35, an added two, so in total 37, approximately. I put the rings in one by one because it doesn't take any force. I actually don't have to use the plier i can squeeze it together with my fingers and push the piston down. Glad you liked it!
