excellent video! very thorough & left nothing left nothing in question. two tips I'd like to share... one, when cutting out the excess cane along the edges while you're soaking your spline, I tried using one of those curved cuticle nail clippers & it worked very well. the curved part allows you to cut pieces below the groove. also, I would recommend using hide glue (old brown glue) to glue in the spline. if you look at your chairs longterm, they're eventually going to need to be recaned at some point. whether a kid puts their knee through one, or just wear and tear. regular wood glue is way too strong & will form a near permanent fuse, which could be problematic when needing to remove the spline down the road. the bond could end up so strong that you may end up damaging the wood around the groove. hide glue will hold the spine in place when dried, but will be much easier to work with when needing to remove it. I used a steamer to melt glue underneath the splines of my chairs & they popped out with a little elbow grease. most importantly, there was no damage to my chairs from having to apply too much pressure & removing a chunk of wood off the chairs along with the spline. again, great video! thanks.

Thanks so much. This was one of our earlier videos so the sound wasn't as good as we hoped. But I'm glad you found it helpful. Our Rush & Laced Cane videos have better quality sound. Thanks for taking the time to say kind things!

I’m curious about this particular chairs style and when it was made. Is there a particular resource you would recommend for the period? Thanks!

There are several great books out there on American Oak Seating/Furniture...that'd probably be a good place to start. We've never seen a chair quite like it...even having had hands on 5-6 thousand chairs and drooling over much more than that. Pressed cane furniture started to appear in the mid/late 1800's...and I wouldn't put this chair much later than the 1920's or 1930's. Without a maker's mark, it's really hard to pin down origins. Thanks for watching!

What does it cost for a chair that size?

You'll have around $20 in materials for most chair seats. The full pressed cane restoration would cost in the $120 ballpark.
