This video will give you a good idea of how the stem and gear function on a ball valve. This is an 8" Class 150 floating ball valve. It originally was lever operated. "When I say lever it really is a pipe". The T bar is actually what is fixed to the stem. When the pipe is inserted into the T bar you then would rotate clockwise to close and counter clockwise to open.
Removing all of the T bar components is pretty easy as you can see. The actual gear is what can get complicated. This video I kept it very simple. The overview of the gear covers the main components. Anything else would actually require us opening the gear. "Gear video coming soon". The key when installing the gear is to make sure the valve is open and the gear is also in the open position. If not you can potentially install the gear incorrectly.
