When your radiator needs replacing with a new one this tutorial can help you make sure thew job goes correctly. This tutorial is for a heating system supplied by a header tank which is usually found in the loft. It's good to make sure the header tank is topped up with corrosion inhibiter.
If you have any decorating planned, once the radiator is off the wall, this is the perfect opportunity to do so.
Safety Tips
Radiators are heavy. Be sure to use lifting assistance if needed.
Wearing suitable clothing including knee pads.
When drilling be sure to use protective eye-wear.

Some useful advice. I learnt that the long holes in the brackets are to help you get the height of the radiator in line with the valves as you can slide the brackets up and down. Then when it is correct, fix screws through the round holes. Thank you.

Always have lots of rags at hand and spread them beneath the radiator before lifting it off. Don't use your best glass bowl to collect water. You don't need that much PTFE tape. If you wrap it around three times and tighten properly, that is sufficient.

Wrong!! You give it 15 tight wraps

I don't understand why people are saying the video shows the PTFE being wrapped in the wrong direction, not wrapped clockwise with the same direction as the nut tightening rotation. Are the valves reverse threaded - anti-clockwise? I've always wrapped PTFE in the same direction as I would be tightening the nut, to stop it unravelling. Am I right?

Top tip. For screwing rad valves into the main body of the rad don't go out and buy a half inch plumbing-specific hex key. It sux buying a tool you'll never need again. Simply grip the shaft of a m8 bolt in your mole grips and use the bolt head. Always ptfe this thread before installing the rad as a precaution.

They hid the mess he made of draining that radiator! Water went down in the gap between the wall and the floor! Would have made much more sense to put a plastic sheet down first and a towel to catch any water that missed the bowl!

You said put corrosion inhibitor in the header tank - that's fine but what about a sealed system. ? In through the top of the rad with the cap removed with a funnel and tube, cap re-fitted then bleed the system.

LOL, pay a plumber. You're asking for specific questions and if you dont know then you should just hire a professional to do this.

Where can modern radiators be bought? I don't see them at large box hardware stores.
@marklimbrick

As soon as you touch the lock valves on old radiator - they will start leaking badly. Now PTFE tape quickly wrapped around unwound thread on adjusting but will seal, its only temporary. If it started leaking again you could come home to a big wet mess. The rubber seals must lose flexibility over time. Expect it and have PTFE tape handy.

Which side do you put air release valve
@alanjohnson8417
@alanjohnson8417 Год назад
You mean the bleed valve? If your radiator is absolutely level it doesn't really matter. If one end of the radiator is higher than the other (spirit level) put the bleed valve at the higher end.

What? he's putting the ptfe in the correct directions, whats wrong with that?
@abscomm
@abscomm 3 года назад
@@Professional_RU-vid_Commenter If you wrap it in the opposite direction that the parts move as you tighten then there is a chance that the tape will bunch up and cause a small leak either immediately or after some time. Therefore you could get a call back. Is that the sort of reputation you want as a tradesman?
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter
@Professional_Youtube_Commenter 3 года назад
@@abscomm i have no idea what you mean. Are union joints treaded in reverse or something? IIRC they are not. The way he's wrapped it, the end is facing away from the direction it will be treaded in. I am pretty sure you are dead wrong on this.
