I always enjoy watching Tommy teaching. :) For those armchair internet "pro's", what Tommy did was not only tell her how to do it, he showed her as well; under his guidance. Now, she has the confidence and the know-how to do the whole wall if she desires.
Notice how he let her do more than half the work? He's teaching her how to tile so she can do the rest if she wants to. ToH has never been about giving stuff away as in parts and labor for free.
AMAZING VIDEOS! I AM SO IMPRESSED! THANK YOU!! I am currently redoing my place. And I had installed new fixtures...blindly. Now, years later, I did a search on how to install a hanging light from the ceiling with no outlet on the ceiling and I got Scott's videos. I CAN NOT STOP WATCHING! The videos are not only informative, but they are RELEVANT to our times. By that I mean that he uses the newest technologies of today and makes it look simple. The videos are a good pace so one can not only watch, but retain the information so you can DIY!
I used this same stuff after watching this vid and it works great, you do only get one chance to get the tile on correctly because this stuff is strong, mine came out perfect and after grouting no one can tell there's no thin set used.
Wow!!!!A king's house....Amazing.....house so beautiful I am trying to see the beauty instead of the tile.....I likes the excitement in u thru out the whole job,& the finsh....I gets so excited working on my home, whether it's me & hubby or contractor doing his thing...I loves to see the finish..😀😀😀🥇🥇🏅
It's an improvement from the bare wall, but I think it would look better with a border on each side. She needs to get some end pieces for the sides, preferably all the same color to make a border. Could do that in 20 minutes, and would be very cheap.
Yeh, I was wondering myself about end pieces as well, but I think that Tom's idea here was all about DIY for a beginners, and thought it maybe too complicated to cut end pieces for beginners, cause you need tile cutters, etc. Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if Tom ended up doing that for her after the cameras stopped rolling- he's such a nice guy and a pro.
Jim D its people like myself who have been in the business for forty + years that see what you "keyboard cowboys" think is the gospel.your being missled.now go feed your cat....
If you're tiling behind the stove, I think it would be better to tile the width of the stove, not the microwave. Also you can attach the tiles to the adhesive tiles first, (before you apply it to the wall to keep your tile lines from sagging as you apply it to the wall.
He's a great teacher. Doesn't talk too fast. But She'll need to find time and do the entire wall. I doubt it will take more than a day and half days if she makes time for it. But this looks fun. Makes me want to see what i can do with my bathroom. Kichen is renovated so I'm not touching it.
I have never used that backing but I don't think Tom would have recommended a backing that would have problems being over a stove. You know that housewife is so proud of that tile.
I doubt that most would be so lucky to have the exact width and height to match the tiles to a whole tile. It would be nice to cover this very common situation.
Tommy is the man , all of his work is awesome , this is stuff homeowners can do on there own , she might have to replace it in a couple years , so what she got to meet tommy fucking Silva , the man, myth and legend. Anyone got a problem with him got a problem with me
I disliked this 90s kitchen and I know very well, it probably cost them 80k+ if they had it done. Lol. Cabinets being cheap laminate. I don't like the handles.. it's dated. The other thing, you'll notice it all goes right up, not even having to cut ONE tile. Lol
"That sounds perfect!!!" Yeah...right lady. You can tell she was not happy and wanted it all backsplash like I would. You came all the way out here to do just behind the stove? In fact, I don't think she was sober. She was smiling the entire time and raging inside especially after he gave her all those directions and said you have to eat out. Double whammy!
I ordered a custom sized brushed stainless steel sheet (online) for behind the stove. Top slides up behind fan. Adhered to wall with caulk. Easy, looks good, not expensive.
watch it again, it was tommy's idea to go halfass bc she's a beginner & he assumed she couldn't handle it, or would take a month of weekends to get it done. she probably would have done a decent job had she done the whole thing.
Quick question. Tiny 2 piece backsplash on Corian bathroom sink. Everything seems plumb and gonna use this same process. Noticed he lays bottom of tile on the top of current backsplash. No spacers needed? Also, the side don't look odd with just grout on the face and nothing on the sides?
Cleaning splatters off of all that grout between the little tiles will be harder to clean than the original wall surface. Better to have gone with a large tile needing less grout.
Go to Home Depot purchased the self Adhesive backsplash, take it out of the wrapper stick it on the wall keep moving, then you're finished no grout needed .
If you are this woman that has no idea you need 2-3 hours to put mortar to the wall and prepare the surface and you need an other 2-3 hours the next day to stick them in place
Trying to figure out will paper adhesive can last as long as thin grout. Can someone help? It looks like paper is much easier to do than thin grout. Thanks
How do you ensure that there is no warpage on the wall for the install? Some walls are not perfectly flat....So there could be highs and lows on the wall...I've never done tiling but I do get concerned about those high/low spots as I saw someone show me their handiwork and using the same tile system as seen here and there were high and low spots on the wall...and well, it just looked awful (the finished work). I was not impressed but happy to see that the DIY was performed with love by this person on their home.
Mr. Silva, I removed my back splash and drywall for electrical reasons. Do you think that I need to use construction adhesive to put the new drywall up or will the screws be enough? Thanks!
not disclosed How would you stick it to the wall, same method? I have these counters that are finished in a Wilsonart laminate and have thought of putting the same stuff in a matching color pattern on the wall. Been thinking about for some time now. Probably will keep thinking about it.
How much stainless have you got in YOUR kitchen, smart guy? As a welder/fabricator of stainless processing equipment, and owner of every Viking kitchen appliance in brushed stainless there is, i can ASSURE you, without hesitation, that stainless is the WORST backsplash option available. You have to clean s.s. after every trip near the kitchen. It shows EVERYTHING tenfold. If some moron uses a scrubby pad in anything other than full length with the grain strokes, youve now got yourself a scratched up horror show of a kitchen. Besides, the man was demonstrating a 'simple, beginners option' of fixing the problem. Not a kitchen remodel.
Yeah. You have 0 surface area w popcorn walls. Be careful, tho. The paint is probably LOADED with lead. Not good to breathe, especially animals and kids. Causes brain damage.
