This is a great video. Was a little stumped at the wiring but after the video, I got our smart switches to work. Thank you!!!

The best I have seen so far. You pointed out that the hardest part is to tuck in all the wires and leave enough room for the deeper switch, which gave me a lot of headache. Things are even worse for the 2 and 3 gang switch. I wonder if I should replace the box with a deeper one.
@ClintHolland

Thank you. I have several of these in 2 and 3 gang boxes and have always been able to make it work. Much easier than replacing it with a deeper box.

Nice video. You mentioned you could install the switch to replace all but one of your switches. It would have been nice if you included that switch in the video or at least in your description of what the switch was or how it was wired.

I have one light switch that didn't have a neutral wire ran to it which prevents a lot of these smart switches from working. They now make ones that don't require a neutral so it isn't a big deal anymore. I am not a huge fan of them as they draw power constantly but it's better than not having one I guess.

Warning: If you have an older house the wall box may be too small to fit a 3 times larger switch and the extra connector caps. Then you have to put the old switch back or tear up your wall for a new box.
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 3 года назад
Thankfully I haven't had that issue but you are very correct. Putting in a new box to replace an older one is not the easiest task either.

I purchased a Honeywell Home RPLS740B1008 and it comes with Load, Line and Neutral. The current switch is connected to the Load, Line and Ground. I know i have to connect the Load to the Load, Line to Line and Neutral to Neutral, but what do i do with the Ground wire that was previously connected to the old switch?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 3 года назад
A ground wire isn't required . If the switch doesnt have a ground option, there may be a screw you can tie the ground to. Otherwise it is not required.

I just installed a Lutron Caseta smart switch on a switch that did not require a neutral on my old house. The Caseta switch has two black wires and a ground. I connected it up to one white and one black running in my wall that was added into my home as a new switch off an existing line. I don’t have any separate neutral running. This old house has built in the 40s has beige, black and red wires running throughout. Seems like Lutron’s Caseta solves the problem of having to run a separate neutral, am I right?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 3 года назад
You are correct, there are switches that don't require a neutral but I am not a big fan of them and here is why. They work by simply allowing power to flow to your light 24/7. So even when your light isn't on, electricity is flowing to the light. They just restrict it so that it isn't enough to light the bulb. If you are just using one or two for lights that don't have a neutral I would be ok with that. But if you plan on replacing all the lights in your home with this switch, it would be significant. For example, most of those switches draw about .2 Watts. That isn't much if you are talking about 1 or 2 switches. But many homes have upwards of 100 switches. At that point, you are pulling 200Watts of power all the time. Not sure what the rates are where you live but that is the equivalent of about $20 a month here.
@loreall.2461
@loreall.2461 3 года назад
@@ClintHolland thanks for that great explanation and advice. My intention is to only install smart switches on a few lights I only wish to use regularly as a matter of convenience. Right now they are still fairly pricey.

How do I wire the neutral wire if I'm installing two smart switch? Do I install both wires from the switch to the neutral wire all together?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 4 года назад
Correct. You can either come from the wire nut with 2 separate neutral wires, one to each switch, or you can connect one neutral wire to switch 1 and from there jump it to switch 2.
@pleasingduck4976

@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 4 года назад
@@pleasingduck4976 So the white is the neutral and one of the blacks is hot and the other one is for the light. You will need to figure out which black is hot first and that will need to be connected to the hot or line connection on the switch. And you can share that black hot wire with the 2nd switch as well. That help?

Okay this is a little off topic but important. When you removed that old light switch plate, I noticed opening gaps around the walls where insects could enter, is there a way to seal those gaps without permanently sealing that back plate to keep insects out?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 2 года назад
You could certainly use some of that expanding foam from the hardware store to seal them. They also sell gaskets that will do almost the same thing.

I only have two wires and one bare copper. Will this still work?
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 4 года назад
It will not. What you have most likely is a bare ground wire, a hot wire and a load wire. You need a neutral wire, usually white in color for this to work.

I had an electrician wire and install these for me. The light on the switches are on but the manual button doesn't power the lights on or off. I still haven’t t connected it to the app. Did the electrician wire it wrong? Or does it have to be paired to the wifi before we can manually turn on and off the lights?
@ClintHolland

I suspect something is wired wrong or missed. These work just like a normal switch rather they are paired to the app or not. I suspect the neutral wire wasn't wired up.

@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 4 года назад
If you only have 2 wires, these switches won't work. You have to have at least 3 wires, a hot, a neutral and the load wire. The only way to solve this is to have an electrician run a neutral wire to the box for you.

@@Heatlifer305 Well, the illegal and far from ideal method that many use is to connect the ground to the neutral on the switch. It technically works but can be dangerous.

I connected everything correctly, the switch has power, the wifi connected and I was able to add the devices to my app. However, whenever I try to turn on the lights manually from the switch or the app, it would make a clicking sound as to it turned on, however, the lights itself do not turn on. Where did I go wrong? I have the same switches and replaced the pre-existing ADT light switches that were here.

If you dont have a ground wire you can fake it by screwing a wire direct to the metal box if you have .then it will work. If you have plastic boxes them you can not install this kind of switches
@ClintHolland
@ClintHolland 3 года назад
You don't actually have to have a ground wire. The only 3 wires required for this to work are the hot, neutral and load. While it is a good idea to connect the ground, it is not a requirement.
