The soloniod is wired in series with the brushes of the motor not directly to ground. The reason for this is so the pinion rotates to stop the situation where the pinion teeth hit flywheel teeth, and not fit into the spaces. When the pinion fully engages with the flywheel, the main contact from the battery is closed and drives the motor full power, without the solenoid being in series
