How to Install a Stereo and Speakers on your Boat! | Bluetooth Kenwood

Watch a full tutorial as a Northwest Boats Jet River Boat will have a brand new Kenwood KMR-D365BT Bluetooth Marine Radio and four 6.5" Kenwood Marine Speakers installed. Note that this boat is a general info install, no two boats are all wired the same. Typically each marine install are custom installs, wiring colors vary, and components vary. This video acts as a general guideline of how to install such components.
This boat had no radio / speakers installed previously.
We will be using a Kenwood radio, friendly to an outdoor atmosphere. This radio is water resistant which avoids corrosion on internal components.

That switch, I'm assuming it's one connector on the back of it right?

Very nice demonstration video! Good crimps, by the way. Two notes... 1. I agree with earlier comments that you are better to connect power to the center lug of the shutoff switch for reasons already stated. 2. 16ga main power wire is sufficient for 10A, but perhaps a little light, since you are running it from the battery switch in the back of the boat. For a 200w stereo, 14 ga or even 12 ga. would feed the power a little better. Something to consider In boats is that oxidation is an issue. Often, over time, the wires don't conduct as well. So upping the wire one size is helpful, long term. Besides corrosion at terminals,, I am often surprised at how much corrosion I see in the middle of wires from diffusion through the sheathing. Very often, I will simply replace the wires, and customer thinks I did something amazing. Anchor Marine tinned wire is BOSS! It's a little pricey, so you have to factor it in, but it's worth the little extra. Thanks again for the clear, well presented video.

The power wire should be ran to the battery switch (1-2-all switch) that way you can't leave the stereo on when you're done boating.

Bought the same head unit. Worked for maybe three weeks and stopped working. Took it apart and found out theres really nothing marine about it. Nothing is coated to protect the circuit boards. Super disappointed, I have used Kenwood in my vehicles since I was a kid. Looked into it and alooooot of people have this problem with marine Kenwood stereos. Shame.

Nope, front speaker material was Plywood and rear was aluminum.

I have a blue tooth radio in my boat, can I pair it with Bluetooth speakers, if so how do I do it?

The Bluetooth radio only applies to steaming music from a mobile device. Aftermarket Radios do not support pairing to Bluetooth speakers (becauase you would just pair your phone directly to the bluetooth speakers). You will need to wire speakers directly to the radio or via external amplifiers.

What size connectors did you use for the speakers? Also were they spade connectors?

We used 16-14 gauge blue spade connectors to connect to each speaker.

@@TroyGrimes For the Kenwood speaker we used, yes, both positive and negative terminals were the same size, so we just used the same style spade connector.

I am actually not sure as this was a customer's boat. But as far as I know, no complaints. I have installed these speakers on a series of other boats and food trucks and they work fine.

I have been using Kenwoods for several years, and they are outstanding. As with any speaker, if you can keep them out of direct sunlight, it helps the baffles to not dry out and crack. Put a cover on your boat, if possible! Sun is harder on them than water.

Where did you run the red accessory wire after the switch? Back to the battery? Helpful video, I’m installing a stereo on my boat that didn’t previously have one.

The switch had battery power anyways, so we didn't need to wire further. However, if you don't, after the switch, just tap into the 12v+ constant line going to the battery.
