We have carpet and tile in our master bedroom/ bath. I am wanting to be putting in vinyl flooring on the concrete and would like to put the vinyl over the tile can I do that? I know that I need to rais up the floor to match the tile flooring. I have been looking at different ways to do this. One being self-leveling concrete or plywood with a vapor barrier. Which would you advise?

Do the edges along the walls also need to be “stitched” every 4/6” or just along edges within the room? Also do the gaps between plywood sheets need to be 1/8” to a 1/4” only along the walls or also where two pieces but up to one another? I’m using non interlocking plywood. I know at 14:00 you talk about butting two factory cut edges together so can they be tight to each other or need a gap?

@jpch13

Great video, Jeff. We're getting ready to tile our bathroom floor, but this video brings up a few questions: 1. What if there's water damage due to a bad toilet install by previous owners and we need to actually replace that portion of the existing subfloor? How do we do that? 2. How do we know if we need to level the floor (e.g. self-leveling compound)? How much variation in floor height is too much? 3. Do any of the recommendations you gave change if we're planning on using a Ditra membrane?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 4 года назад
First you need a solid substrate. the need for level is usually secondary for the need to be flat. depending on the slope and where your door is adding a leveling compound can create a huge problem at the transition to the room. if not then level is always nice to have. If you are going to use the membrane than you cannot use a leveling compound in conjunction with it! The older the house the more variation in floors are acceptable. we call that carachter. Cheers!

Im remodeling a 94 year old house on a pier and beam foundation in Louisiana. The original subfloor was 3/4" with a felt vapor barrier and 3/4" tongue and groove wood flooring on top. When I go back on top with new 3/4" plywood im assuming that i need to put a vapor barrier between the two. Is that correct? The finished floor will be LVP.

So interesting. Around here (Texas) you will find 1x4 or 1x6 pine tongue and groove in old houses, never anything larger though. And everyone uses 3/4, or 23/32 for the subfloor. 5/8 is rarely used for anything. 7/16 for roof decking or exterior walls and 23/32 everywhere else. Also, plywood is very dimensionally stable and I think you're just creating stress by adding a rule about which direction it needs to face. The most important thing is that you explained how far apart the screws should be placed and that you start fastening in the middle of the piece, not at the edges. That is what forces the plywood into a stable position. Also, most plywood will have a side that is exposed so that inspectors can see what type/rating it is. So, installing it as a bowl, or as an arch, shouldn't matter. Just my thoughts and experience.

Thank you for posting these videos! I’ve been doing some research (ie watching other videos), and other tradesmen indicate that a thin layer of thin set is required to fill any voids under the new layer of subfloor (also eliminates the possibility of the ‘crunching’ sound.
@gtfg3800
@gtfg3800 4 года назад
Thinset is a concrete product meaning it will harden & get brittle. What happens to that over time as people walk across the floor ? I would much rather apply subfloor adhesive to my new subfloor (along with the screws) which will harden up but still flex a little & hold the 2 layers together. I used that method years ago in leveling a very badly sloped floor and have had no problems with any of it since & that's in a rental !

Plywood now is all 1/32" thinner than it used to be. This is an issue when you have 5/8" (true 5/8" from several years ago) that you have to meet but the new stuff is 19/32". This will leave an obvious ledge if you are putting down vinyl flooring or a softer laminate.

Do I simply pour on leveler up to 1" thick, or should I first build it up with increasing thickness of plywood, before pouring leveler? Also, since I plan to install backerboard before the marble tile, should the leveler be poured before or on top of the backerboard? thanks

Preparing uneven subfloor for tile by adding another layer of plywood and then Detra but the floor is not flat should i first use self leveler and then the plywood or installing the second layer of ply wood and then self leveler before installing Ditra and tile ? or does not matter thx

Hi Jeff, did you use hardwood or softwood plywood? Are both fine to use under floating vinyl floor?
@ZoomSmith99

I had the same question, but it looks like the stamping on the plywood is Exterior CSP - Canadian Softwood Plywood.

Is there a specific reason you use that long driving bit, or is it simply for convenience? Love your videos!
@jeffostroff
@jeffostroff 5 лет назад
I was wondering the exact same thing! Such a long bit makes it more unstable, although he made it look easy screwing them in. I would use the DeWalt Drywall Screw setter bits, then you just shoot it down to the floor, and it sets the screws perfectly into the wood without going in too deep. Some of his screws went in too deep, losing the holding power of the bugle of the screw.

What if the original flooring underneath is no longer level? Do you install the subfloor and then add in self-leveling mix before putting in new flooring?

I would like to know what type of screw heads you use. It seams you never have a problem driving the screws. I use Phillip head a lot and they strip a lot . I tried square head and they are a little better. Can you give me some tips?
@Moethemad70
@Moethemad70 5 лет назад
get a proper drive bit for the screw, usually the tub of screw will let you know what drive size to use on the screw head.

Sumpter Parker Canadians love their Robertson (square drive) screws. I’m pretty sure that’s what Jeff is using.

Do you recommend using glue or any adhesive for the plywood underlay. Some random RU-vid video I just watched recommended glue underlay plywood and screw or it would squeak in few years. What’s your thoughts for the viewers ?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 2 года назад
glue and screw the first layer to the joists. the second layer is designed to be a deflection resistant layer for tile install. if you ever want to change back from tile to something else gluing that second layer will destroy the entire subfloor system and cost the next homeowner a lot of frustration and money. totally unnecessary. Cheers! Always think about the next reno!

@@HomeRenoVisionDIY thanks for the prompt response. Currently the subfloor is 3/4 inch planks which I have screwed down to stop squeaks. Second layer of plywood under lay I al putting down is 1/2 Inch plywood. On top of this surface will be engineer flooring and tile some spots. Purpose of this plywood underlay is to even out the floor a bit and close the gaps between subfloor planks for clean engineer floor install. But in future I did not want any squeaks to come back that’s why had thought about glue the underlay plywood. I hope other viewers also benefit from this. Lots of misconception on this subject

My home was built in 1966 and has diagonal planks running across the joists that look to be about 5/8"-3/4" thick, there is an additional layer of 5/8" plywood on top of that that had linoleum glued to it (not salvageable). Is it ok to pull up the 5/8" layer and put down 3/8" of plywood over the planks with 1/4" backer board? I'm installing 12x24 tile.

I just watched your other video about floor prep for Vinyl planking. There you mentioned the use of Crown Staples for securing a new layer of plywood on top of an old layer to prevent the floor from deforming. Are crown staples still a viable solution or should I be using flooring screws like in this video when I put down my new layer of plywood?

I'm replacing the flooring in a bathroom and I found moldy sub floor near the tub (it may have been just overflow from the previous owner. I've treated it and may replace it. I'm laying vinyl plank flooring in there next. Should I do something to waterproof the sub floor in the wet areas?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
seal the floor to the tub with silicone. aside from that painting the subfloor with waterproofing membrane will help but the water will find somewhere to go if it gets under the floor. Cheers!

Do we not have these alternating thread screws in the United States? Nobody at Lowe’s had heard of them. There’s nothing called flooring screws, either. My handyman is on the way and i’m tasked with picking up flooring screws. I’m at Lowe’s and I don’t know which screws to get for my subfloor. 🤪

Love this video but confused when you put new plywood top layer over existing old subfloor, why didn't you just remove toilet flange and install on new subfloor top? I spend hours just watching your videos, thank you.

I know this doesn’t have to do with the video but I have a question about painting, I have dark hot pink walls and I painted a white primer over it but it’s very blotchy, will the paint cover it up or do I need another layer of primer?
@HomeRenoVisionDIY
@HomeRenoVisionDIY 5 лет назад
in most cases pink covers quite well with 2 coats. When picking a colour ask the staff at the paint store. But go to a real paint store not a hardware store that sells paint.
