Installing A Winch on An ATV is almost a necessity. When getting a new ATV you should strongly consider your next purchase be a winch. They are pretty easy to install and can be completed with little previous experience.

Overall, installing a winch on an ATV is really only a couple of steps. It can take some time to run all the wiring the proper way and to ensure everything is neat and clean. The entire job, however done right, can easily be done in an afternoon.
If you have any tips or tricks on how you have installed a winch before, please leave those comments down below.

Nice thing about Polaris, at least my Sportsman 1K, is it came all pre-wired for the winch.. Just mount, plug, play... Well done video dude.. I can appreciate the amount of time and effort it takes...

Thanks man, appreciate the compliment. I wish the Scrambler came pre wired, that's definitely a huge perk!

You should solder any wire connections. Especially since you will be in water. Will prevent corrosion.

Good video was hoping u had a better place for the solenoid placement I had a winch on my 17 scrambler 850 that didn't require a solenoid (dont know how that worked) but it finally gave up and was gona replace it

Helpful and informative. Coincidentally I just ordered a winch for my Renegade yesterday. This will provide guidance along with the recommendation from papa Wattz(see below). Keep the videos coming Chris.....good job.

Thanks brother, glad it was helpful! I did see the comments from Papa Wattz. That's what I love about RU-vid and the comments, there is always more to learn and discuss with fellow riders! How did the install go?

Yo, that scrambler is prewired. There’s three female blade type plugs extending from a wire loom on the right (looking at the machine). They’re only hot when the ignition is on. Just found this today on my (new to me) ‘14.

A little advice on your wire splice, if you re going to splice the wire that way you need to solder that joint. If you don't, the splice will loosen and create a high resistance"hot" spot eventually melting your electrical tape and causing corrosion that will impede current flow, making your winch inoperable :-) I would solder it( if you can heat shrink around it) or put some silicone electronics grease on the splice and tape it good. I hate to critique but I am an Electrician and I see these failures all the time! Good video though.

Thanks for the input. I'm all about taking constructive criticism so I appreciate the input. I've actually been thinking I should have taken the time to heat shrink it. You really think it's necessary to solder the wires together even if some heat shrink tubing is used?
@MrJeffyb69
@MrJeffyb69 5 лет назад
Yes, solder or some type of mechanical connection ( crimped butt splice, wire nut, etc..) with it being a tapped connection like you did, solder would be the best, followed by a little liquid tape and wrapped with a good electrical tape like " scotch 33". The idea is to keep from having a loose connection that will cause overheating and corrosion due to any air gaps. With this being on an ATV that will encounter a lot of vibration, moisture and other elements, its a failed connection waiting to happen. They do make splice kits for wet connections that I'm sure would work instead of soldering but that would require you to cut the wire you're tapping into essentially making it a 3 wire splice and those you cant use heat shrink tube :-) Like I said I'm an electrician by trade and that's why I chimed in, I'm sure any mechanic, plumber, carpenter, etc...would do the same to me if they seen me attempting those things. I like your videos and you seemed to be very open minded so I hope to be helpful when I can. I use a lot of your tips and other youtubers to make my life easier and more enjoyable, not to mention cheaper by learning from all your guys' mistakes LOL !! Keep up the good work and can't wait for more videos :-) P.S. Send all your unwanted Minnesota snow to Michigan!!

Hey Papa Wattz, thank you for all the tips and lengthy reply. I appreciate the input, especially from an actual pro! As for leaving feedback, I love getting feedback and tips on better methods. Especially when it's in a useful way and not someone just trying to be a jerk. I would never say I know everything about ATVs/Offroading, etc. I love learning from others here. While I do aim to provide help and feedback to others, I also love using it as an opportunity to learn more myself. Or learn more/better ways to help not only myself but pass that information on to others. We can all learn from each other, and that's one of the big things I like about this community!! Thanks again for all your discussions and input.

Anytime, likewise from you on ATV's. I've only had 4 wheelers for a couple of years now. Been riding sleds for a while but kind of a "noob" with these ATV's :-) Love your video's, keep up the great work!

Was wondering how you like your Scrambler and if you have had any issues with it?
@NavigateOffroad

Absolutely love it! I did have some serious electrical problems, however that's because I bought it after a few modifications and they screwed up the wiring, not Polaris's fault. Otherwise it has been a great machine.

What do you need a winch for? Shouldn't be getting stuck in mud puddles. Just kidding 😜 I think it is time to upgrade her to a mud machine? Just for shoots and giggles. 😎

😂 Oh yea right...i forgot I never get stuck, that's a good point. I guess I'll just take it off 😊 LOL, been thinking about making it into a hybrid much machine... Thinking build it out, ride it, sell it, get a new one and start over?! 👍

You showed how to hook up a winch which is great but watching you hack into the wires so close to the connector was cringe worthy.
