I will walk you through the Generation 3 Tesla Level 2 Wall Connector installation. This is an approachable project for DIY homeowners who are comfortable doing electrical work. You will want to check your local electrical code as you might be on a more updated version of the NEC. This project doesn't have to be expensive and my total cost even with the Tesla unit was only $500 and a couple hours of work. For me I will save money charging at home compared to at a local Tesla Supercharger and the difference will pay for this whole project in 1-2 months so it is a no-brainer.

I believe that 6/2 NM (Romex) wiring is not adequate for this installation. Per the NEC for NM cable you must use the 60° column which for 6/2 NM is rated at 55 amps which is not allowed to protect 6/2 NM cable on a 60 amp breaker. The options are to install 4 gauge NM wire, run individual 6 ga. THHN wires in conduit, or derate your Tesla charger and install a 50 amp breaker. I would also run a 6 gauge ground wire and not the 10 gauge in the NM 6/2 cable.
@letswritecode2283
@letswritecode2283 4 месяца назад
Mostly correct, but a #6 ground is overkill. A #10 ground is perfectly code-compliant for a 60A circuit.
@MrUnique7777
@MrUnique7777 4 месяца назад
Agree it is not a NEC violation but a 6 ga ground should be used since the Tesla charger has built in GFCI.
@billjohnson3344
@billjohnson3344 4 месяца назад
Agree. To correct, as #4 gets a bit unwieldy (and overkill for this very short run), probably his best option in this case is #6 THHN in MC (flexible metallic conduit). #6 thru #10 ground is ok.

@BackyardMaine
@BackyardMaine 3 месяца назад
@@billjohnson3344 The ground is fine at 10 AWG. No need to run larger. NM-B is rated for 90 degree C but the ampacity is taken from the 60 degree column. I doubt if Scott will ever have an issue with such a short run but technically #6 THHN in FMC would have been a better choice.
@letswritecode2283
@letswritecode2283 4 месяца назад
You have a code violation, not all #6 wire is created equal. #6 Romex is limited to 55A ampacity, and to charge at 48A you need the wire to have 60A ampacity. So the wire should be changed, or the TWC should be configured with the 50A breaker option and be limited to 40A.
@solideogloria7987
@solideogloria7987 3 месяца назад
It does depend on the temperature. But just out of curiosity, does the rating depend on the sheathing? So if you stripped it and had the stranded wire in conduit would 60 amp be okay? Or is it still sub par to just thhn?
@letswritecode2283
@letswritecode2283 3 месяца назад
@@solideogloria7987 Regardless of the temperature, #6 Romex still is capped at 55A ampacity. It's true that the wires inside are pretty much the same thing as THHN, but they aren't labeled or intended to be used individually without the cable jacket.

@@letstravelsandadventures8326 The Tesla Wall Connector can't accept aluminum wire. You also need to do a load calculation to find out how much capacity you have available. If you don't have capacity for the full 48 a, you can use a smaller circuit. Find out what that is before you buy the wire.

Hi Scott. You could have easily put in a 2 foot 3/4" conduit with a kick and used 6 gauge THHN. That should be rated for 50A. With a run that short, I would consider going to 4 gauge. The breaker can be 60A because 55A isn't a standard breaker size, but it's still a 55A circuit, meaning the continuous load must be limited to 44A, no ifs, ands, or buts. If an inspector allows 48A, it just means they aren't enforcing code correctly.

So if you don't have the extra cash to fork over for a level 2 charger, don't worry about it. You will likely be fine with a standard outlet.

Super off peak pricing is usually in a 6 hour window. 12A will miss it, literally costing you more money. You can get level 2 for dirt cheap now. They’re just glorified relays, with a minimal amount of negotiation.
@schubajo

@@float32 On average it's about $500 to install a 220v line plus the cost of the charger. I have never heard of "super" off peak pricing so what you are claiming may be extremely regionally dependent. Peak times in a lot of cases as around 4-9PM and then the rest is non peak. Even if you are charging from 9PM-6AM, fast is still about 27 miles of range which is fine for about half of people. Even if you did some peak charging, it would take a lot of charging to make the $500-1000 installation cost of a level 2 worth it. Not knocking on anyone who does install one since they can be very handy (two cars can charge at the same time, for instance) but they are certainly not necessary for 75% of people.

It has been great, there are some things like panel gaps, door seals, and other finishes which you can tell this is an early serial number. From the driving experience it is fantastic but this is my first EV so I am sure I would get some of that same benefit from a 3, Y, S, or X. The steering is amazing and I had no idea I would like it so much the combination of steer-by-wire and real wheel steering makes this think insanely maneuverable. I have towed by 7'x14' dump trailer once and it was smooth and strong. I am going to keep the raw look but will get a ceramic coating this week to help with cleaning in addition to the rest of the windows (not windshield) tinted to match the back. Unless you are all in and want the foundation I would wait for the $20K discount and for them to work out some of the kinks that early trucks might experience (so far no big issues 🤞). Oh yeah and this thing gets more attention and emotion than any car I have ever seen. I will not be mad when there is 100 Cybertrucks in my town and I can go back to blending in 😂.

Total cost per mile over the life of the vehicle? Probably not great for a Cybertruck. Things in an EV's favor: fewer parts to replace, no oil changes, electricity is cheaper per mile than gas, brake pad replacement is rare. Power hogs.
@Jcewazhere
@Jcewazhere 4 месяца назад
How is an EV a power hog? It takes a ton of electricity to pump oil out of the ground. A ton of gas to transport that oil to the refinery. A ton more electricity to refine it. A ton more gas to transport the gas to the station. More electricity to pump it into your car. Then you get at most 30% of the energy of the gas from the tank to your wheels. Gas cars waste 80% or more of the energy in oil. Meanwhile EVs go from solar panel, to wires, to car, to wheels with a total efficiency of over 80%. "But Cobalt!@!1!!" There's tons and tons of cobalt used in refining and mining oil and coal, nobody said word one about that. Then some EVs use some tiny bit of cobalt in their batteries and people go nuckin futz. Many EVs are being made with different battery chemistries that don't use any cobalt. Oil will always use cobalt, till we run out I suppose. "But batteries degrade!!!11" Up to 10% total capacity in the first few years, then less than 1% per year for another decade. There's million mile batteries on the road. Transmissions degrade, engines degrade, exhaust systems rust, and so on.

EV's are not feasible for most people, so this video really doesn't have any value for most people. In addition to the many technical problems with EV's and how really expensive they are, the really egregious thing about them is that fossil fuel is being burned in power plants to generate the electricity to charge the EV's. This is what happens when uniformed activists and politicians get involved with products instead of honest scientists and engineers who are the ones who actually have to build these things and make them work. If you install one of these EV charging outlets, you may very well be removing it when feasible technologies are developed.

@@EverydayHomeRepairs There are too many issues, chief among them is the availability of things like lithium to make them. As Toyata's Chief Scientist said, there isn't enough lithium and other resources to build enough of them. This is the reason why Toyota is working on hydrogen fueled vehicles. The environmental damage caused by mining the materials and the very bad labor practices also make this really unattractive. Though the climate may be changing, it still hasn't been proven that it is caused by burning fossil fuels. CC models fail to predict current climate when back tested with data from decades ago. The earth has gone through warming and cooling cycles for thousands of years. North America was once covered by a sheet of ice in the past. There are many other factors that influence the earth's climate.

@@audiophileman7047 Yeah, it hasn't been proven, except to everyone who understands the actual science. Back testing decades old data doesn't negate the direct connection between the rise of industrialization and the extreme deviation of CO2 levels and their effect on climate from natural historical climate cycles. Science isn't truly about "proving" anything; science is a method, a means toward understanding. Of course hydrogen is being developed, as are other technologies, as well as other battery technologies. Monoculture led directly to Irish famine in the 19th century, and today's scientific community is not in the habit of making that kind of mistake when it comes to technological development. Lithium technology is not the end of battery development and is unlikely to be the final word as there are other potentially viable options already on the table. There's a whole lot going on behind the scenes that you clearly don't know about so your conclusions are no better than those of an uninformed sycophant. But thanks for playing.

A 48A Charger (not de-rated) must have wire good for up 60 Amps due to the 125% rule for continuous loads. See NEC 210.19 (A) (1)(a). One could argue the use of TC Cable in the wall without a conduit under 6 feet or just use 6 AWG THHN (for L1 and L2, use 10 AWG Cu for ground) in a conduit instead.

You don't NEED a lvl2 charger. Depending on how efficient your EV is, and how much you drive per day, a basic wall outlet can suffice. Most get about 2mph from a basic wall outlet. 20mph from a 240v outlet. Then 200mph from a DCFC.* So if you drive 20 miles per day, but your car can be plugged in at home 10 hours a day, you can just use a basic wall outlet. Do the math and see what you need. Even if you drive more or park less you can still charge mostly at home and then hit a fast charger once a week, or top up on the weekends or similar. For the first 2 years I had my Bolt I was running the cord from an outlet in the living room and out the mail slot to where I parked. That gigantic, heavy, inefficient monster truck he's charging will probably get half a mile per hour plugged in to a wall outlet. An Aptera would get 10mph or more from it. As with everything YMMV.
