Diesel knock is Vanos 100%. I've dealt with it the entire time I've had my car no major hinderance at all besides the sound and some low end power loss.
Probably the Vanos is causing that rattling sound. I don’t think it’s the timing chain guides, but it could be the timing chain tensioner. There’s a new one out, which is a bit longer than the older version. I would also suggest to switch to a 80C Thermostat, instead of that OEM 105C.

Thanks bro🙋🏻♂️I dont think you have to program it. I say that because my sister has the 01 525it wagon. We changed the battery and it didnt need to be programmed.
