I decided to install cable railing for the deck rebuild project for a few reasons. First, I thought the stainless steel railing would look great. Second I thought the installation would be much simpler then installing a traditional wood railing. Third, the cable railing would be lighter in weight compared to a wood railing. Considering the cantilever construction of this deck I figured keeping it as light as possible would be a best practice approach.
The cable railing was easy and straight forward to install on the deck. The main consideration when using this system was to make sure the cable spans are less then 48 inches. So I installed 4x4 deck rail post less then 4 feet apart first. Then I used the template tool to mark the spacing of my cable on the post. From that point on I installed the cable fasteners, attached and secured the cables, and then tensioned the cables to an appropriate stiffness.
In this video I show the cable rail installation using lag screw cable connectors as well as bolt cable connectors that also serve as tensioners. In the next video I will show the cable rail installation using another type of cable connecter and tensioner.
The finished cable railing turned out looking fantastic and I am very happy with it.

One of the convenient aspects of installing a cable railing system is the multiple of cable attachment hardware varieties available. In this video, I show how the stainless steel cable was attached using a lag stud connector and a through bolt connector. The lag stud is ideal for terminating the cable into a wood post however does not really provide the ability to tension the cable. The through bolt connector works well on a corner post where both sides of the post are accessible, this fitting also provides cable tensioning function.

I will be installing cable on my deck replacement. But I want to avoid using the bottom rail like you did and just go with cable all the way down... 36" high, cabling 3" OC. do you see an issue with not having a bottom rail?

I would think it would be fine if you are able to keep railing spacing at 3" like you mentioned. I would just be cautious if their will be children around as they might try to step on the first cable row if there is no "kick" rail.
