In this video, I'm sharing how I like to trim out my windows and doors to look really high end...but on a budget!
This video was sponsored by my friends at The Home Depot as part of the #THDProSpective program.
The stars of the show in this project were my Ryobi AirStrike 18V ONE+ nailers. They made this job a breeze and save so much frustration without having to drag hoses and compressors around.
Check them out here: (aff links below)
16 gauge Ryobi AirStrike 18V ONE+ nailer: homedepot.sjv.i...
18 gauge Ryobi AirStrike 18V ONE+ nailer: homedepot.sjv....
I've used this exact method to trim out windows in my last three houses and love how "fancy" it looks compared to the typical builder grade trim installed in most homes. This is a really budget friendly way to upscale your windows and doors!

I’m in the process of building a new house and refuse to pay a fortune for all the upgrades. I opted for the “basic” on the windows because I knew I could do this. Thanks for the clear instructions! I’m feeling a lot more confident!

Just subscribed. You make this seem effortless. Love it! Thanks for the info on the nail guns. What brand of paint and what tone of white do you use for the trim? I'm at that point now where I need to paint and I don't want for instance a white that has a gray tone to it. Looking pretty much for pure white or something close. TIA

Haha I understand! I did one like this several years ago in a remodeled kitchen with no plans to do any others and that’s the window that started everything. After that, I ended up redoing all the ones in that house 🙈 it’s almost an addiction haha

I had always looked at trim like this and wondered how difficult and expensive it would be to do. Thanks to you Shara, I not only have my answers, but I have realized that they are simple enough that I feel like I could do this in my house and make all my windows and doors “Fancy”! (Oh you Fancy!!”). As usual, you can always be counted on for good ideas which are very workable and easy to follow along with you, and this is why you are one of my absolute favorite RU-vid channels and creators.

Easily my favourite DIY channel. Simple designs that look so classy. A very difficult mix to get. Been acquiring tools for two years, garage renovated last year in readiness (gotta start somewhere so a paintbrush seemed a good way!). Now to build cabinets. I'll be good at boxes by 2023. Thank you for your clear steps and I love you explain everything. Including the "why" and sometimes the inevitable mistakes we all make. So often these are omitted or simply overlooked from the viewers perspective. Cracking job and thanks for the inspiration over the last month to actually get on sketchup and start playing with some ideas. Garage first so I'll learn there where it doesn't matter then work on an entertainment centre (which I took a lot of inspiration from the one you did for your Mum. (Mom!) Not even gonna apologise for the essay as people are often quick to criticise but are rarely so forthcoming when the message is purely positive.

Hi Shara, Thank you for giving me hope on how to get a great looking trim around doors and windows without the expensive price. Could you please let us do a rough price comparison between store-bought trim or having a pro do it vs doing in ourselves like you did? Thanks and keep up the great work! You are simply inspirational 🙂 Btw, I just activated the bell so I'll be notified for all your future videos.

Thanks so much for following along! I’m not sure how cost compares. To be honest the store bought trim kits are the exact trim I’ve been going around in my homes replacing for years because I hate them. I have no idea their cost as I’ve never been interested in buying them 😅 and also I’ve never had a professional out to look at replacing my trim either because I knew I could do it myself much faster. So I’m not sure how much they’d cost either. But I can imagine it would be hundreds of not thousands to replace all the house trim.

I love how the crown molding really adds extra dimension to the window. I am curious as to how much dust (and sawdust) ends up getting captured behind that crawn over the course of a year. Do you ever check/clean the empty area behind the crown?
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 2 года назад
I’ve only had this in my shop for a week and haven’t made much sawdust in there yet since then. But I’ve had these for years in my other houses and I guess dust gets stuck up there, but it doesn’t like “fill up” or anything. I painted the wall two years after installing some around the doors in the hallway of a past home and it wasn’t much up there. A few dead lady bugs and some spider webs 😂 but if it bothered you, a quick vacuum here and there wouldn’t be too difficult.

It came out really nice just like the other projects you have done! Do you have a video on building a bookcase?

Not sure what kind of bookcase you’re wanting, but I have several videos: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a8QqxeZ7irE.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RYZhjuhxHv4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-vfKvn7xbK_s.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-gjWNBaE3hRw.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CYZCUIqecGU.html

Love your channel! Dumb question: would it be better to pre-prime the wood if painting?

Great timing with this video! I'll be trimming out windows and doors in my newly remodeled basement rec room soon. Excellent tutorial on doing this! How do you maintain your Air Strike nailers? Any oiling/maintenance tips? Mine often dry-fires, especially after not using it for several weeks or months even. Thanks!

I’ll be honest, I’ve never done a thing to my airstrikes. I’ve had the 18 gauge for 4-5 years now and use it OFTEN and have done zero maintenance. Every now and then (maybe 1/30 nails?? I’ve never counted haha) it will dry fire, but I just reshoot the nail and move on.

I love your videos and that youuse Ryobi. 😲 I want to buy an auge Ryobi AirStrike 18V ONE+ nailer but there are too many of them and its hard to find some informations. And now I see you have 3 of them. Could you make a video about the difference? 😌
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 2 года назад
I talk about this a little in the video. The differences are in the size and style of fastener they shoot. The 16 gauge shoots a larger nail. It leaves a bigger hole, but will have a stronger hold. I use it for things that really need to stay put…like the main trim here. The 18 gauge is a little smaller. It’s better for more delicate pieces. The stapler shoots thin, but long staples and it’s good for securing thin materials (like using 1/4” ply, mesh, fabric). They also make a pin nailer (which I don’t have) that shoots very small nails. That’s good for trim, but won’t provide much hold. It’s best for “pinning” pieces in place so you can come back and secure them better with a bigger nail (or glue would work too). I THINK those are the four types of airstrikes they have right now.

I really like the idea of the half round at the bottom. A question, is there any rule about the length of the overhang in relation to the header? The inside width of my windows is 32". Can I leave 1" overhang on either side?

Thank you for sharing this! We have a new build and our builder made the inside of the windows dry wall. Do we have to take the drywall off first or can we skip the step of trimming the inside of windows with new wood?
@WoodshopDiaries
@WoodshopDiaries 2 года назад
It depends…if you add the wood on top of the drywall, if it’s still not covering the glass or moving parts and it’s still just on the outside frame, it’s probably fine. But if it covers any of that, you’d need to remove the drywall. Does that make sense?
