For more information or a written out step by step you can stop by www.thediyguy.net/2014/06/how-... . A video on how to install Phillips Daylight 8 driving lights. We installed them on a 2007 Subaru Forester.
Thanks for the video, found it as I'm thinking about fitting some, or similar, or maybe even make my own as a home-made electronics project. Past DIY experience has taught me to always connect accessories up and test they work before installing. I know what it's like to remove something I just stuck on with 3M tape...
Your video is easy to follow & images very clear. This should solve my problem of needing to use headlights during the day, which dims my digital instrument lights into invisibility, thank you! I do have one critique however, you were very careful to not contact any metal when wrenching the positive battery connection. Some of us may be a bit clumsy & spark the wrench. Maybe you could add a caveat to remove the negative cable first, then loosen & attach the positive connection, preventing sparks flying, then finally reattaching the negative cable & negative controller wire.
These are a well built set of lights. ( still on the car and working as wee just put them on) Pretty easy to install and are pretty bright. You're welcome, Glad we could help. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. This is one of the video's we would like to redo and go further in depth of the marker light explanation and a some other bits as well.
What a load of mechanical waste of time garbage. You COMPLETELY skipped over how/where to wire the orange Marker (what is Marker?) wire into what please...? Everybody knows how to use a Philips screwdriver and double sided tape. What about detailing/explaining the electrical/wiring detail (other than the battery - again - simple), in more detail please? Merry Christmas.
Zoomer that's because on every car it will be different... turn your headlight switch one click the same lights that light up within your headlights are your marker lights. So use a test light to figure out which wire going to that bulb is the power wire and attach the orange wire to that one.
No, what you would want to do is to get an add a fuse and find a fuse inside the fuse box that is switch hot. Put the add a fuse into that same slot and then you now have an additional power lead that is fused. It could be called a fuse tap.
Just been researching the Regulations around the use of these lights as an aftermarket accessory in Australia as my son has bought some for his vehicle. The following is a direct quote from Department of Transport ' The daytime running lamps shall be switched ON automatically when the vehicle's engine starts. The DRL shall switch OFF automatically when the front headlamps are switched ON' Any advice on whether this occurs using the method in the video would be appreciated as dimming doesn't mean switched off.
Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave us a comment. Yes they do look pretty nice on the car and tucked down there they almost look like they could have came on the car. Don't forget to give the video a thumbs up. Thanks
Thanks for the vid. Sorry for my English, but where did the "T-Tap" (or something like that) orange cable go? Where should it be connected? 9:19 min. Thanks.
Your welcome. The "T-Tap" is a type of connector used to connect the orange wire to the wire that goes to the marker light / running lights. No cutting or soldiering required when you use one of those. If you click the link in the description it will take you to our website and if you scroll down and click "T-Tap Connector" you can see what I am taking about. Connecting that wire will dim the driving lights when your headlights are on.
+Randy Linn Thank you. I didn't think of that.. but there a name brand led so hopefully they wont burn out. I am not sure if you can buy just a replacement light. I would be more worried about the control box going bad.
Great video man... Any thoughts on how to connect this system to an existing DRL circuit? Specifically, how do I find the right wire? I wan to add LED DRLs to the non-LED factory DRLs. Thanks again man!
Jason Champion Thanks. This set is designed to operate by itself. You could look in your manual for a headlight diagram or google for one. If you use this kit you can just turn you headlight switch one click which will turn on the marker light. Locate where that bulb is on the backside of the headlight and that is where you will use the T -tap to connect the orange wire.
Hi, I've got a Volvo c30 before the face lift, we already have drl but I'm very interested in installing led dlr in the grille, the Orange wire I'm confused as to where that would go? I'm from the uk
Cee Bonnick Hello, So to make it easy you can do one of these things 1) not connect the orange wire to anything and the lights wont dim 2) If you click your headlight switch one click so that the running lights come on you will want to locate the lit bulb inside the headlight and then locate the power wire going to it and attach the orange wire to it.
I bought a different branded version of the drl. It doesn't seem to have the control box as your Philips lights. It seems like a direct connection to the battery. I was wondering if they will also dim like your lights when headlights are switched on? Thanks
+Karthi Bala Iam not sure what brand you got but i would just test the light by hooking them to the battery to ensure they will turn and off by themselves and you don't need to wire them to a switch. If there is another wire other then the two that go to the battery then I would say that wire will control the dimming function if it doesn't have that extra wire then I would say they doesn't have the dimming capability.
+Thien Tran Hello, each car is different that's why I didn't show it. If you turn your head light switch one click the lights that turn on are your marker lights. You can use a test light and hook the clip to ground and test each wire to see which side/ wire is the hot side. Then use the t-tap and connect it.
Jacob White Hello, If you click the link in the description it will take you to our website where there is a link to this exact kit on amazon. If its a pain to get it off of amazon at least you would have the part number and could shop around at a few local stores to find it.
To all you people complaining about what a marker light is ! Its the SIDE light in the headlights . 1st click is side lights 2nd click is main beam headlight Forward on your stick is FULL beam headlight.
Hello.I have toyota rav4 and i connect the control box (not orange wire) with the battery and the lights but when i start the engine the lights (philips daylights 9) do not work.what is the fault?
Nooby Vapor Thank you. The 3M tapes holding up very well has not moved or fallen off. Just make sure the area you use the tape on is clean.Your welcome and thanks for watching.
I got them off amazon.. If you click the link in the description it will take you to our write up and in the first paragraph there is a link to them on amazon. They do sell out fast.. just checked and says there is only 1 left.
i have a question does the philips day time running lights at night have to be turn on simultaneously with the fog lights cause if thats the case , i would hate that? thanko you
Roberto Aguirre This kit has a control box that turns them on when the car is started and off shorty after the car is turned off. They dim when the orange wire attached to the marker lights gets power. If you leave the orange wire disconnected they will not dim and will be bright all the time.
+jurlita alcock The only thing not shown is where to connect the orange wire which is to the marker lights.. Which is different on every car.. On this install we did not connect the orange wire to anything so the driving lights don't dim.Turn your headlight switch one click the small lights that turn on within the headlights are your marker lights attach the orange wire to the positive wire going to the marker light.
I want the leds to activate when the OEM drl lights of my car turn on, but with the brightness always the same. How can i connect them, How to determine which wire is the OEM drl of the car?
You would want to buy drl lights that don't have the control box and take the power side and attach it to the power wire of the OEM drl light and then ground to the car or to the ground in the harness going to the light. You could use a test light and test each wire to figure out which one is your drl wire Or you could look up ( google ) a wiring diagram for your car.
Also its Illegal here in Oz to have day time lights on when marker lights are on.After market ones have to be wired in so thet Day time lights turn off when park/head lights are turned on
Someone else has posted that as well. These wouldn't work for you guys over there unless you installed a switch on the positive wire connecting to the battery. But then you'd have to turn them on and off when needed, defeats the purpose of the auto on and dim. These don't shut off completely they dim when the head lights or parking/ marker lights are on.
I have a question - i want the drl to only be on with my headlight DRL are on in the day and turn off when my Hi beams come on in the night - can you help me on where i would have to tap the orange wire?
These particular driving lights are always on. They will just dim when they see power on the orange wire. So if you wanted them to go completely off they will not. If you wanted them to dim when your headlights go on you would hook the orange wire to the running lights. If you wanted to use them as a fog light and only dim when you have your high beams on attach the orange wire to the high beam wire. If your sure your DRL 's on your vehicle go off you could wire the power wire from the box to your DRL and it will go off when they do And don't connect the orange wire.
hello.. I install my lights similar to your video and used the controller.. my problem is that the lights will go off sometimes while I'm driving or if I leave the car idling. what is the cause of this? please respond
+westbank876 Hello, Its the same model as I used? I would guess either the positive or negative wire going to the battery is not making a good connection. If those seem good maybe you got a bad controller with your lights. It could also be that your alternator is not putting out enough to tell the controller that the car is on. ( We have a video on how to test your alternator) These lights have been in use since 2012 and were moved onto this car in 2014. These lights still work just as good as the day they got them.
+TheDIYGuyDOTnet thanks for the quick response... I am using a non branded set... the relay seems to be the problem.. today the lights went off again and it came on back when I switched the park lights on(the first click of the light switch) and whenever I turn it off the drl lights go off. I switched off the car and restarted.. the lights came on for a time and went off again.. this is very strange because it was not doing that yesterday.. I'm beat
The battery in my vehicle happens to be located in the trunk... Would there be a good workaround for this little problem of mine? I'm afraid the power wires won't be long enough to reach it.
Hello, Not sure what vehicle you have but I know Cadillac and a few others have a power block or distribution block under the hood or a spot where you can jump the car from under the hood. So you should be able to connect to one of those areas.
I have a Mazda 3 2014, I connected the red & black to d battery but it did not light- the yellow wire I tryed connecting it to the drl fuse it light but remain on when car is off, can you help?
You have the same kit? This kit is a Red, Black and an orange wire. The red n black go to the battery as you have done and the orange should go to the marker light or do not connect if you want them to stay bright all the time. Does it have the control box? These lights stay on for a little bit after the car is turned off. Gives you time to get into the house before they go off. They only way they stay on is if you have a battery charger/ tender on the car as it sees it charging and thinks the car is running.
SushanMusic The orange wire will be different on every car as the marker lights are in different locations and use different color wires. To figure out where you would need to connect it on your vehicle trun your key to the ON position and then turn your head light switch one click. You should see small lights light up within your headlights these are your marker lights. You can use a test light and hook the clip on the battery and test the wires that go to the bulb to figure out which wire has power. Then use the T-tap to connect the orange wire to the power side of the marker light. Or you can not hook up the orange wire and the driving light will just stay bright.
i bought a pir.... but the wire calbles are sooo short....i dont get it what were they thinking when making them like that? what am i going to do now...
This pair have pretty long cables and have been used/ installed on 4 different cars without having to extend the wires. You could always cut and extend the wires. Cut them mid wire, solder the extension wire in and heat shirk the joints to ensure there water tight.
That's what I was thinking. If not then they're pointless. Might as well use the fog lights for day time and buy some bright as fk light bulbs for the price of the day time runing lights
Zohaib Anwar It will be different on every car.. but if you turn you headlight switch one click it will turn on the marker light. Locate where that bulb is on the backside of the headlight and that is where you will use the T -tap to connect the orange wire.
Hello There I have a set of DRL lights just like your's but with No Orange wire,, how would I connect these and how would they work..i.e as soon as I turn the car on would they come on.? and go off as soon as I switch it off.??
Hello, I am not to sure, If they are the same brand with the control box just without the orange wire.. ( maybe an older version ) They will turn on when the car is started and turn off a few mins after the car is shut off. The orange wire is used to dim the lights.
Peter Conway With just wires going to the lights and no control box they will stay on unless you install a switch to turn them on and off. You will need a power wire to the switch and then from the switch to the red wire. The black wires will be your grounds. You can connect them together and then to the battery ( neg. side) or you could attach an eyelet and ground each of them to the car with a self taping screw.
No, As each car will be different. You just need to use a T-tap connector and connect it to your marker light wire or leave it off and the lights will stay bright all the time. ( Helpful if your vehicle doesn't have fog lights.)
We have link to the gen 2's them on Amazon -> amzn.to/2QQfhTG but they are currently out of stock. These were the Philips DayLight 8 LED Daytime Running Lights. The amazon link will take you to the Gen 2's which are the Philips 12824WLVWAC1 DayLight 8 Gen 2 High Powered Luxeon LED Daytime Running Lights.
Pang Christian Then you would run a wire from the positive side of battery to your switch inside your car and then a wire from the switch to the power side or RED wire of these driving lights.
"The "T-Tap" is a type of connector used to connect the orange wire to the wire that goes to the marker light / running lights" This part is a little vague, what, where is the "marker light"? Thanks!
Yes I guess it is. The marker light is the smaller light inside the headlight, There in different places on each vehicle. If you turn your key to the "ON" position and then turn your headlight control ONE click those lights that turn on are your marker lights. Some people will not attach the orange wire as they want the lights to stay bright all the time.
By not connecting the orange wire they would not meet Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 76/00 - Daytime Running Lamps) 2006 where dtrl's must be off when marker light is switched on. www.legislation.gov.au/Details/F2016C00818
yes, but you don't use the marker lights for driving or as DRL if your vehicle doesn't have DRL. marker lights are just used to signal someone where you are per se.
On every car it will be different.. Turn your key to the "ON" position then turn your headlight switch 1 click. Those lights that turn on are the ones you will want to locate the power wire going to them and attach the orange wire to using the T-tap.
Do you have the exact same lights? If so the box inline controls when the lights turn off and on. They turn on when they see voltage from the alternator (changing the battery) and then turn off within a min or so after the car shuts off and it doesn't see any voltage. If yours doesn't have the inline control box then you will need to wire in a switch. If there LED lights there's really need to wire in a replay because there suck a low draw.
TheDIYGuyDOTnet thank you for the reply. it doesn't have inline controls. is it possible additionally add one inline to this LED DRL?, it will make any issue if we add one?.
No problem, I am not sure if you can find/ buy the control box separate maybe you can. Like I said you can always wire in a switch inside the car so you can turn them off and on when you want. If you have factory DRL you could wire them into those so the aftermarket ones will turn on and off with the factory ones.
Still on the car today and haven't been touched.. Its all about prep and making sure the surface is clean. Yes there was a built in fuse holder. At the 5:44 mark you can see it on the red wire hanging right in front of the oil fill on the car.
Sir, after you had completed your project, and you turned the engine into the "on" position, did the "load" seamed heavier with the new install added? Or, was that slight hesitation just "normal" for your vehicle? Sir, thank you for your video, a great job overall.
Put a switch in so you can turn them off if your charging system quits. I've had that happen way more than having DRL lights make any difference in safety. Can't remember the last time that headlights, even on a cloudy day, would have made a difference except on motorcycles.
bottmar1 That's a good point. I didn't think about that but then again I always the common size sockets and wrenches in my cars so I could just unhook the wire from the battery.
I worked for a company where I had to have another guy drive my car to the next work location close to a hundred miles away and the alternator quit in my 1992 caprice but he was able to turn the headlights off (like the old days) and made the trip ok. I had to work until 9 P.M. so if I had to chase back for my car I would have gotten very little sleep that night. This happened on the famous 9 11 attack. He may not have attempted finding any of my tools if he couldn't just turn off the lights with a switch. In all I don't like features like DRLs that prove more problem causing than safety providing. None of my motorcycles are hard wired for lights as they are even more likely to have charging system failures. I never forget to turn them on anyway especially since the fine in Minnesota is over $125. They seem to be flexible towards good reasons to not have lights though. Have a great day.
Not sure what your trying to install them on but the cable from the battery runs up front to a distribution box or the main fuse you should be able to install it right there.
ерлан бибек The marker light is the smaller light inside the headlight, There in different places on each vehicle. These have a build in fuse between where it connects to the battery and the control box so there's no need to wire one in as it is already there. You can see it at 5:44 the black thing closest to my hand.
Very long and informative video. Why did you omitted the most important part of the wiring for the lights from the connection part from the light sides to the battery. The part with the Orange wireFor the stupid of us. In my humble opinion that s the most important part for the less mechanical and electrical minded soul out there. Cheers. Like me..
The marker/ running lights are the smaller lights that come on when you turn the headlight switch one click. On this forester they are right above the high beam bulb. @ 9:40 you can see them turn on.
These lights will only dim if you hook the orange wire up to your marker lights and the marker lights go on. If you don't connect the orange wire like we didn't do in the video the lights will always be bright.
If you have this exact set there is no need for a relay. It has a control box that is wired directly to the battery that will turn them on and off when it see the alternator charging the battery. The control box will also dim them if it see current on the orange wire.. So if the orange wire is hooked up to your marker lights and you turn the marker or headlights on they will dim. If you don't connect the orange wire they will go on and off as normal but won't ever dim.
I didn't show that because it is different on each car/truck.. If you turn your head light switch one click the lights that turn on are your marker lights. (Smaller ones within the headlights) You can use a test light and hook the clip to ground and test each wire to see which side or wire is the hot side. Then use the t-tap and connect it to the power side. You also don't need to connect it as we didn't on this forester so the lights stay bright all the time.
nice,. but its sucks like that,.. i would had put the orange wire to the head lights or fug lights better,. all on bright would had been better,.. anyhow cool
If you hooked the orange wire to the headlights or fog lights it would do the same in the video they would dim whenever there was power going to either the headlights or fog lights. Hooking it to the fog lights though would let them go bright when you go to high beam as the fog lights go out and wouldn't have power going to them. But you could do what we did on this car and leave the orange wire not attached to anything and they will stay bright all the time.
Excuse me, but this was a real pain it the ass, when you connected the positive side of the DRL. Never touch the positive side of the battery, before taking down the negative! When reconnecting the battery, vice versa, first the positive and then negative. In short, it’s not the best idea to dig around the positive corner of a closed 12V electric circuit...
Sergsobe25 Sergsobe25 lol are you kidding me... How do you think today's cars trims/ mouldings are held on...? These lights have been on the car since the video was made still on there today haven't moved haven't fallen off. It's 3M tape not Scotch tape not masking tape 3M tape.
Correct, with this set there is no way to power them of while the engine is running unless you were to wire in a switch. They tried to make it an easy install without having to wire in a switch or a relay.
