how do you determine the rough opening of the gates? i'm looking to do dual 12ft gates but i cannot find information on what the opening width for post to post should be
You should make the distance between posts the actual distance. Factory made gates are actually shorter than advertised. So a 12’ gate might actually be 11’ 10.5” - each manufacturer varies a little. This is to allow room for hinges and adjustment. So for dual 12’ gates I would make my opening 24’ exactly. Hope that helps!
I always call them Farm gate hinges. There are a few different sizes - which usually depends on the size/weight of the gate. Most new gates come with them. But they also sell them separately at any farm store or even Amazon.
Thanks for the question Joe, that's one thing I forgot to cover! Width between posts should be the exact measurement for whatever gate or gates you're using. For instance, I knew I wanted two 10 ft gates for this project, so I made my opening 20 ft. For one 10 ft gate I would have made it a 10 ft opening between posts. I know specifically for farm style gates they take out a few inches for you to account for hinges, hardware, etc.
Amazon. It’s a Flo-fast brand. They got stupid expensive like everything else but it’s been very handy for fueling stuff up! There’s a link to it in the pinned comment at the top.
Nice job! You mentioned having fun driving posts, I’ve never considered that fun, what did you use to drive posts? Also, do you have a video of your “H” bracing install? Thanks!
Thank you! It was a little more fun than normal because I was able to use a new to me piece of equipment. That video is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-1zzSLP1wyxc.html . I didn’t do video on these H braces I’m thinking I probably will as soon as I get a little time.
I believe these are made by a local manufacturer located in Paris, TX called Metro Gate & Manufacturing. Pretty economical gate and built well for the price. Our local feed and seed store carries them.
If there was a road to grade then yes. But no road here. They are just pasture gates. Both gates swing both ways. The problem is one gate post is higher than the other, but it's still not really that big of an issue.
