And you understand this English dialect? I hav ebeen many times in Liverpoll, Manchester, Leeds etc. but always keep my ears open tom listen what they say!, sometimes i pass, ha ha ha. I'm from te Netherlands and drove many years with a truck, in the UK the say Lorry, with deep frozen food and before that with flowers and plants, I've seen the Uk from south to North and from east to the West and every time I had to listen very well what the people tellinmg me, because I don't understand it immediately but after recall I did. Yes I have learn English at school but most from the Television special the westerns from the good all days!!, well take care you all!!!

Nice work and am sure the owner will be happy with the new soak away, I would use some sheeting to cover the lawn when you dig out the soil, that way is is easier to move to the skip and less work to tidy up the lawn afterwards.

Neat project. I always appreciate your emplanations. So, I've never heard of Soak Away but it looks like it supplies the same function as a leeching field (although it looks a lot sturdier than just piping by itself. Also looks like it takes up less space. Here in Southwest Ohio, USA we have lots of space so leeching fields are quiet common even in semi-rural areas. Love the videos.

@@jetter1jem955 Just to help in the British (Scouse) to American English translation. A soakaway is strictly for rainwater, not sewage or waste from the house goes into it unlike a septic tank and leeching field. It's job is to get water away from the foundation of the building.

Great video. You mentioned you would not use the crate soakaway in areas of clay. What would be your suggestion for these types of grounds instead?
@tonymcfeisty2478
@tonymcfeisty2478 9 месяцев назад
It depends on if you can get through the clay layer. On my extension the foundations went through the clay layer to a water permeable rocky base at 1.2m, so was advised a soak away was possible by doing the same, unfortunately the clay layer increased in depth as you moved away from the house so at 1.7m we still hadn't broken through, solution was to bore a 150mm hole in the bottom until we broke through the clay, ended up going a further 1.8m, we lined this bore hole with a permeable capped upcv pipe and filled with gravel, we then filled the pit to confirm water would drain away satisfactorily , ended up using an extra (3) layers of crates (1.2m), 150mm of gravel/sand then 350mm of top soil, added some french drains later into the soakaway to help with the general poor drainage of the garden, been in about 5 years and even with the very heavy rains in late december 2023, we've had no problems with drainage like we used to. You could try boring a hole to see the depth of your clay, I found out later the area I live has clay deposits that go 10's of meters deep ( there are lots of old clay quarries locally), so I guess at 3.5m I got away lightly.

Brilliant job 🔥 I have clay…how would I do it instead?

Sweet job lads. Serious question here, we have a very bad issue with flooding in our garden, and we’re on clay!! What are our options instead of a soak away? Keep up the good work and don’t forget your breaker & sledgehammer 👍🏼👍🏼

Is the flooding from the downpipes from guttering of the house/shed/ paved areas ? Basically more rainfall from a larger area than a smaller area can cope with. So think about what kind of plants like wet root conditions, could you plant a tree that would take up some of the ground moisture- so you need something with large leaves - it will need maintenance but a beech hedge interspersed with holly would look decorative and practical, allow a couple of the beeches to grow to 6 foot+ trim others to 3 or 4 foot. once a little drier add in a couple of apple trees for fruit. Middle of garden , really all you can do is mix compost, sand (no more than 10percent) and the clay and areate with a fork - one trick is fork holes with the sand brushed down the holes. the grass should then grow over. Make sure any other trees or shrubs are not shading too much and try to get airflow in the garden- check where any garden sheds or greenhouses are , can they be in better places. Can you replace any concrete slabs with the inset plastic grid style paving with gravel in it for drainage down , rather than out ?

depends on the depth of your clay, if you can break through to a water permeable layer a soakaway could still be an option. that's what we did, dug a 1.7m deep pit and then 150mm diameter borehole 1.8m deep in the bottom, (3.5m total to get to a permeable layer) I have heard of people boring numerous 100 mm holes through the cay, fill them to within 250mm of the top with gravel/sand and finish off with a compost/top soil/sand and gypsum mix, but we were able to sort our waterlogging problem with the soakaway (for shed + summerhouse drainage) to which we added some French drains later, so I can't offer any more advice on the success and practicalities of the multiple borehole method.

Enjoyed watching you working on the job. I would have done one thing different was make the pit another half a foot deeper. But I've never done one of these and know nothing about it.

Gotta love winding up your colleagues makes life worth living. 😂 Fantastic job, always a sideline in grave digging for you guys too. Where we are here in Shropshire is clay base so no chance of digging a hole like that without ruining yourself.
