This is just a quick video showing you how to and why you should install dual catch cans on your Mini Cooper S R56.
EDIT: DONT USE HEATER HOSE!!! Use 3/4 fuel/pcv/eec line! It’s much stronger and won’t collapse under vacuum like the heater hose does.
Parts list:
Catch cans (you need to order 2): amzn.to/3buZvZa
Brackets: amzn.to/3lUqiD3
3/4inch fuel line (you need about 6 feet): get at your local auto parts store
Ribbed hose connectors (you need 2): get at Home Depot
Project Mini Store: teespring.com/...

I remember reading on the NAM forum about this fancy catch can setup with one way valves that was made for mini coopers. The guy who made it gave a very detailed explanation about the setup too. Although it was a nice setup it was also costly too.

I'd drill and tap the top of those catch cans with a larger bolt size... Something wide enough to slip an extraction pump hose inside. If you make the emptying of the catch cans easy, you'll do it more often I bet. I really liked your solution. Thanks for sharing!

@sauronor
@sauronor 3 года назад
I may have a small tip, since the fittings are much smaller than the 3/4 fuel line hose you can use a small piece of garden hose instead of wrapping the fittings with tape, it's just the right size.

That sounds way better than the tape. I’ll give that a shot

Hey, how is the oil consumption? Did you find a fix? Did this solution fix it? I read on a forum they have 1 piece oil scraper rings from factory on N14. You can install 3 piece oil scrapers and the oil consumption shut stop with no oil consumption. Mine consumes 1L every 2 weeks or roughly 1000km. @@vin3022

The fittings are actually barbed and 3/4 hose clamps perfectly. You can get rid of the thin walled brittle plastic hose completely.

Have some blue smoke coming from my JCW N14. Not all blue, looks like a bit of over fueling too. (It's been tuned, so could be a fueling thing). But the blue tinge...could it be the valve cover? I have a catch can. And she's running exactly as she should, runs Great, so can't see it being the rings or turbo. Could be wrong of course. There is a bit of oil staining near the top.right of the valve cover, near where my hoses run to the catch can. Might have to pull it off and check it out properly...
@GeraldBirkett

Okay to add to my questions before, what I want to do is block of hole going in to intake manifold and then put a catch can to atmosphere with filter on idle side of PVC and then put another catch can on turbo side and do what you have done there. Would that make more sense, because I can see me doing the other way the pvc would have all sorts of pressures problems I'm guessing it won't know to open or close because it would have pressure from both sides. I was just hoping to get away with one catch can that was all. As I have just gone a cleaned all my values on my Peugeot 308 that has done 200km. Yes I know Peugeot but you know the best RU-vidrs for my engine are mini cooper because it's the same engine. So I thank you for all your work and all theses videos they help a lot and so informative. Keep up the good work
@ProjectMini
@ProjectMini 4 года назад
If you only want to run one catch can just install the one on the turbo side and lock off the pcv on the other side. Mini sells the plugs to block the pcv off on the manifold side
@GeraldBirkett
@GeraldBirkett 4 года назад
@@ProjectMini Thank you so much for that. I guess is there really any negative effect in doing that. It's still sucking out of PVC. I heard people say because it has longer to get to engine it does build up pressure bla bla in crank case. I mean I was trying to solve two problems one oil with catch can and two block off manifold so I had 100% pressure and no lost if any of from PVC ever. I can see the point of it all but I still think it's over doing it. What's your throughs on blocking off vs catch can on back vent?

I would not recommend putting a vent anywhere in the pcv system. You will get a check engine light for unmetered air

Good video, but, I think the 3/4” hose is too big and is larger than any of the fittings included with the oil catch cans. Most bring variable sizes including 3/8 ID and around 1/2” ID. I bought the 3/4” hose ahead of time and when I compared with oil catch can fittings, they’re all too small for the hose. Now I gotta see if they sell bigger 3/4” fittings. But seems unnecessary because the hole into the catch can is small anyway. Your videos are great Thanks!
@sassyrav
@sassyrav Год назад
For anyone else with this issue I used orange conduit. There's a size that fits perfect over the largest fitting in this catch can kit and nice and tight too as the fittings have a notch on the ends. The 3/4 hose goes perfect over the conduit.

Very nice work and helpful advises. Just as an idea, I would like to share, what I did. Maybe you would like the Idea. I bought a budget 3-way-OCC (2 x In and 1 x Out). One of the In-Ends I connected to the idle exit and the second In-End to the other (pressure/power) exit. The Out-End I connected to the air pipe, which goes into the turbo charger. The hole in the intake tract, where the Idle-Out would normally go, I closed with the respective OEM cap. This way I only need one can and one hose less. The blowby coming out the idle-valve is not that much, so you wont have to empty the can much more often than now. Furthermore you have to empty only one can and not two. Regards from Germany.

@@yikes647k If you are asking ONLY about the intake tract, where the idle-out would normally go, than NO. Because both PCV run the same way, but get in on two different ponts of that way. I only drove about 40kms (25 miles) per day. I definitely wasn’t expecting them to fill up so quickly. Almost all of the liquid was dirty looking water in the back one and the front one was mostly water with a bit of oil. Just wondering if this seems consistent with yours. Thanks. 👍

all it does is catch oil before it goes from the crankcase to the intake to prevent coking in the intake or turbo. Basically, you could technically vent it right to the atmosphere if you wanted to. technically you dont need an oil catch can aha.

@@PneumaticFrog what about blocking off back one? Or even venting? Or is it better keep connected to intake

@@GeraldBirkett all it does is go your intake. i dont see why you couldnt just block it off. I'm fully sure tho. ask your local mechanic.

@@GeraldBirkett ACTUALLY, now that i think about it, it wilk work BUT the valve will act as a restriction and not allow the crankcase to ventilate properly
