How to Install Fog Lights on a 2009 - 2013 Subaru Forester Base Model

This week we tackle a long overdue upgrade to Dana's 2010 Subaru Forester and that's installing fog lights.
Dana's 2010 Subaru Forester is the base model so it didn't come with fog lights and the front end without the fogs installed is partly ugly in my opinion. I've been wanting to install the fog lights for a while but it wasn't a priority. Christmas was a great reason to get all that Dana needed for this upgrade. We spent a couple of days installing new fog lights, yellow LED bulbs and the proper Subaru light switch needed for these to work.

The latest and likely the last upgrade to Dana's Forester. One piece that I didn't realize I missed on the editing is that these come with the wiring already taped up to the wire harness along the frame so no additional wiring is needed. Simply cut the tape, and plug in. Let us know if you have any questions.

Thank you for the kind and detailed explanation video. I installed the fog light that I wanted to install on my Forester since 14 years ago with the help of this video. The four parts can now be purchased for less than $100. Ali Express (a pair of fog lamps $28, o ring cover $8) is the same product, but is much cheaper than Amazon. Turn Signal Switch is $29 on Amazon. However, the relay was not available at Subaru dealers or nearby parts shops. I bought it on Amazon for $19. Of the 4 parts, only the relay is made in Japan, the rest are from china.... I am very satisfied after installation... Thank you...

I did not change my bezels, because I did not want the chrome. Sure wish I had thought about painting the chrome to black, would have been easier than to jigsaw the middle out off the blacks ones and resurface the inside for tight fight.

Thank you for watching and the kind words. We appreciate it. Thats great question. Savings in money...yes. Savings in time ( which i calculate at my normal hourly rate I get paid at work 🤣). Nope. I actually looked at them before buying this particular switch. The OEM look is cleaner and easier since the wires for the fogs were already there, just taped up.

@SpiritedWrenchers 10 месяцев назад
Hi Brent, thank you for watching and asking. I preferred to keep my Forester as stock as possible, and only upgrading where OEM fell far short of the mark (like the battery). With that in mind, yes, I would still go with an OEM setup in the Forester again if I still had the vehicle. Especially with replacing the stalk, which kept us from needing to mount a clean-looking aftermarket switch. Hope this answers your question; take care and stay safe!

@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers 2 года назад
Hi Ziggy, thanks for watching and noticing that we left off the part about finding the existing wiring (filmed, but not included... thanks, Art! Lol!). Yes, to save time at factory, they are pre-wired for fog lights. All that's needed is to cut the electrical tape holding them back in order for them to be accessible for fog light installation, maybe do a quick blow-out/cleaning of the clips.

Great video, I have a 2010 base Impreza model and want to add fog factory lights and factory heated seats. How do I know if the factory harnesses are there? Dealer has said they aren't on the base model but I see many people online say they are
@SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers Год назад
Hi Jordan, thanks for watching and asking! The Impreza should be pre-wired just like the Forester base model. Check in the locations we showed in our video for the factory fog plugs to know for certain; the 2010 base Impreza and the 2010 base Forester shared the same engine and transmission with similar styling so I cannot imagine the wires being in a significantly different location. I'm not sure if the relay and stalks would be the same, but it's possible (probable?). For the heated seats, we honestly don't know. I wanted to add them to my Forester, but not at the expense or hassle of swapping seats entirely or trying to swap upholstery with a junked heated model replete with unknown stains. For those, I'd probably poke around a junked or friend's or acquaintance's Impreza to search for the wiring harness underneath the seat. Once you know what you're looking for, it may be as easy as pulling up the carpet. Base models often come with unused wires for higher trim levels just to save time and money at the factory from needing to retool. Hope this helps; take care and stay safe!

Hi Spinners. Thanks for watching, and we're so happy that this episode gave you the confidence to tackle it. @@MichaelPSmith-mp1fk Thanks for watching and asking. We appreciate it. That's a great question. @SpiritedWrenchers
@SpiritedWrenchers Год назад
Hi Rob, thanks for watching! I will not lie that I had to do a little bit of research into rear fog lights. It looks like the 2010 USDM Outbacks have molded locations on the rear bumper for simple light reflectors, and kits are available (I saw a few on eBay) to upgrade them to LED brake or fog operation. The kit appears to hard-wire splice into the rear tail or brake lights, but if you're electrically-inclined you could run longer wires to splice into the front-fog or create an independent switch function. The USDM tail lights do turn on when the headlights are on, so if independent control isn't required then it should work just fine for your needs (turning on when the headlights are on). Since we do not have the Forester anymore, we won't be able to source the Forester version and test the product, which sounds really neat. I hope this helps; take care and stay safe! Powodzenia! 🇵🇱🇺🇸
