Just found you and I have to say how much I appreciate you just getting on with it. I am sick of watching tutorials where people take 5 times longer to say something than required. I very much appreciate your style of tutorial. Going through all you others now.
Thank you for the kind words. Hopefully you like the other videos as well. As my channel has matured, I do provide some commentary, and even have a small series containing rye whiskey reviews along with the smart home stuff, if that's your thing. I do try to keep the commentary on-topic as much as I can, and once the tutorial section begins, it's go time, no-nonsense. Feel free to skip ahead if you just want the nerd bits. :) Thanks for watching!
Hello. I’m super new to home assistant but have to say this is one of the greatest videos I’ve seen to easily set up home assistant I’ve found. A little fast paced but I was able to install my first home assistant. Looking forward to watching more of your content to learn about the platform. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the kind words! It was meant to be a bit fast paced for the "in 3 minutes" part, but I figured RU-vid has a pause button if it's needed. :) thank you so much for watching, and if you're new, there are a lot of great videos on how to set up all sorts of cool stuff!
@@fasthowto yes. A 3 minute video took me 20 minutes but as a result of you instructions I was actually able to install a instance of home assistant when other video I was not able to. Thanks again for taking the time to create this video.
This worked perfectly, and let me get a head start on Home Assistant before my HA Yellow showed up. I think you've hit a perfect sweet spot for your channel tutorials of a whole bunch of people that are new to HA trying to figure out how to use it, while all the existing tutorials are using old(er) versions of HA.
That's awesome! I'm glad everything worked for you with no trouble. Thank you for the kind words about the videos and the channel, and thank you so much for watching!
The "algorithm" showed me one of your videos, and I watched a few more of them. I like the quick and to-the-point feel of them, so I subscribed. I started my Home Assistant fun in April of 2022 and luckily kept the Wife Approval Factor in the positive range. Quick tips from channels like this are always appreciated. Keep up the good work.
Not all the secret is to explain very quickly. It is not a contest who speaks faster. INSTEAD OF 3 MINUTES, IT COULD BE 5-6 MINUTES OR EVEN 10 MINUTES OF AN APPRECIABLE QUALITY
This is a really good tutorial, I've just gotten into smartening up my home so everything is new to me (been a while since I've had that feeling with tech). But another thing I've also got into recently, is wanting to add a server to my home (so I don't need to keep my main PC on to access files, also gonna have my plex server on it). While it's not set in stone, I'm thinking I want to use Windows Server, as Windows is what I know the most, would the installation of Home Assistant on Windows Server be the same as in this video? Thanks mate. :) Edit: Just looked at some of your other videos you have, guess I'm gonna be spending a bit of time watching your videos, great channel you have!
Thank you for the kind words! If you're going to use windows server, I would imagine you'll use hyper-V instead of virtualbox. I've not set that up before, but deploying the vm shouldn't be TOO different than this method, I wouldn't think. Let me know how things go, and I hope you find the rest of the videos useful! 😊 Thanks for watching!
Thank you this helped me restore my old home OS backup, i thought just dragging and dropping the clone into Oracle VM box would work but I kept getting errors when starting the system, following this guide and using the files from the clone fixed that.
Saved me a lot of stress. Only have experience running Hassio on Linux servers with virtualizing. Switched to Docker where my Skyconnect ZHA was no longer supported as it has Thread firmware. Had to make a quick Hass OS just to unflush the updated firmware.
Thank you! The quick format is definitely a challenge with some topics, but I'm working on it. I hope you're able to get all the info you need; it always brings a smile to my face when I hear about people that have been helped by my content. That's what makes it all worthwhile! Thanks for watching!
Thanks. Tried for months to get this working. Your's is the first to be successful. Question - can I close the Oracle VirtualBox window or will that close the virtual machine?
Unfortunately that will shut down the vm - at least in the default config. There may be a way to change that setting, but I honestly haven't messed with it too much. I only use the VirtualBox instance for my lab/test/videos, so whenever it's running I'm doing something with it. Thanks for the kind words, and thanks for watching!
@@fasthowto How about the opposite - Home Assistant in VirtualBox starting automatically when Windows starts - say when there is a power outage and I restart the computer?
Hey great vid! Was able to set up with ease. I'm trying to set up a zigbee USB antenna, but it's not being detected in my HA browser. Do I need to make any changes to my VM instance?
Thank you so much for the kind words. Please don't hesitate to offer feedback and advice, I'm trying to learn more and get better with each and every video that I make. Thanks for watching!!
Started with old laptop but now running it on a Dell Wyse 5070 (added M2 Sata drive), using HA OS Generic x86-64 version. This is another option for those with the capability to run on VM or even on one of those over priced Raspberry Pi if they can even find one. Also following directions.
Why did you switch from the old laptop to the 5070? I've got several old laptops here that are likely more powerful than the Home Assistant Blue I'm currently using. With the number of devices and automations and the complexity of my dashboard, I have begun to notice a slowdown in performance. My solution to that is a scheduled reboot of HA every night (I'll discuss it more in the next video), but I'm starting to think I need to look at alternative hardware. Thanks for watching!!
@@fasthowto I bought a couple of the Wyse with the intent to make 1 a PFSense or OPNSense router and the other to replace HA Laptop as I want to use it for another project. Well wife let me buy a Synology NAS during Christmas (she was running out of picture space on iPhone and Google Drive), so will use that to create the few VMs and/or Docker for the other Apps I was going to use laptop for. Plus the Wyse has a little lower power draw, got to save some money where you can.
I've covered that in several videos. I think the intro one was maybe in my second video on the channel - seven must-do things after initial setup perhaps? Thanks for watching!
I didn't know I needed to comment to your very first video to be in the running for one of the prizes. What I should do is comment on all of your videos because I like them all. lol
The giveaways mentioned in the videos that are currently up at this time (as of 3/29/2023) have all concluded. However, there will be more in the future, and rules for them will be given when they are announced. :)
Great quick video, thx! I tried installing Virtual Box but it needs Python, which I don't have, and installing it looks like a lengthy involved process. Is it really needed for this to work? If so, I'll find a tutorial on how to install it. Cheers
@@fasthowto There were no options, I just clicked on the VB file and it started installing and then stopped and said I need Python before it would continue. Maybe you already have Python on your computer??
On the machine this was recorded on, I actually might have. But there is an updated video for this, recorded on windows 11, that I definitely did not. It was a brand new PC, and I don't recall having to do that there. Check that video.
@@fasthowto Got it! I removed the partial install, rebooted then started the install from scratch, when it came up asking what modules I wanted, I removed Python from the list and away it went. Up and running HA now, thanks for your help. cheers
@@kilohertz684 Glad to hear it! Sounds like perhaps they changed the default install? I don't remember having to uncheck that box in the past. Glad you got it working!!
When I ran START it finishes quicker than on your video (2:17) and doesn't look like the image and there is no IP Address. It mentions "mapping table". Wondering if you can help?
I'm just guessing since I've not seen that error before, but I would check the network mapping on the vm to make sure you have it using the correct NIC on your system.
Thank you for the words of encouragement. It's definitely a challenge to keep them short, especially on some of the more complex topics, but I'm trying!! Thanks for watching!
Like the wifi password automation video! Thought i’d throw my hat in for the 1000 giveaway and i like supporting growing chanels! Keep up the good work! If everyone drank more Bourbon the world might be a better place!
@fasthowto I've been viewing all of them. I've had a fully integrated smart home since the casa Verde days in 2011, but I've just gotten into home assistant. You need to do a vid on PoE NVR camera integration. I have a Night Owl system and cannot find any content on how to integrate to HA. I think a lot of folks would tune into it.
i followed the same steps but in Oracle VM in the processeor it was greyed out(can only choose 1 processor) so when i push start i didnt get the black window with the ip. what can i do ... thanks
I've not run into this problem before, guys, sorry... My guess would be that IntelVT isn't enabled in the BIOS maybe? I did just make a new video on how to configure this on Windows 11. Maybe something in there will help you out? If you do figure it out, please come back and let me know so I can help future viewers! Thanks for watching!
Great, concise video - thanks. Just about to buy a re-furb PC to get going in Home Asst. Once this is running in a Virtual Box on a pc does this mean that the pc is running Windows, AND running Linux HA at the same time? I thought that it was recommended that users buy an old PC with SSD, take the SSC out and "flash" over the Home Asst Linux over to this PC then that PC uses Linux for ever more and never runs windows (so no windows updates take place in the background)?
Thank you for the kind words! You are talking about two different types of installs. This video is for people who have a Windows computer, but nothing else. If you have dedicated hardware, there are many many different ways you can choose to install, all of which are topics for future videos. :) Thanks for watching!
Is there a reason others suggest using a Raspberry Pi over Windows? I already have a windows computer so this seems simpler. But it is my everyday computer, does it impact my computer in some way to be running HomeAssistant and is that the reason it seems the preference is towards Raspberry Pi? TIA!
I myself use a raspberry pi. The preferred method is actually to run it in some type of hypervisor, such as VirtualBox or VMware - but on a dedicated system that only hosts virtual machines. This is because it's easier to backup and restore a vm if you just make a copy of the file containing the entire thing, rather than trying to restore a backup from within the system. It's also easier to upgrade hardware since you just copy the file containing the vm onto the new system then. I created this video to give people a way to get into home assistant for free, so they could try it out using a computer they already had. Then if they find that they like it and want to stick with it, they can choose what type of hardware is best for their situation and invest in that.
@@fasthowto wow amazing! Thanks for th e detailed response and the original video! Both are incredibly helpful and that’s exactly what I’m going to do now to test it out. I assume the machine has to be running at all time as well? That would probably necessitate the dedicated machine as well? Thanks again. Super helpful!
@@patricksullivan9323 my pleasure, and thank you for watching! For testing or playing with it, no, it just has to be running when you want to mess with it of course. But yeah, if you're going to use it to control stuff, you will want it running all the time. A few other reasons I forgot to mention about why many people prefer RPIs over a dedicated pc or server are power consumption, noise, & heat. There are even more, but we're getting kind of into the weeds now. Maybe I'll do an episode about pros and cons of RPI vs pc or server. There are benefits from all angles, and negatives from all angles as well. Lol
@@fasthowto Awesome, well I do love getting into the weeds after all haha! Thanks so much for your responses. All makes sense to me. I'll keep an eye out for that video if it ever comes, no pressure tho!
@Fast How To biggest issue sith rpi is availability. Why mess with it? There are a ton of more powerful pc's at same price range with zero availability issues. Seem no reason to wait wait wait and mess with rpi.
Great video but I get the following error "Could not start the machine Home Assistant because the following physical network interfaces were not found: 450Mbps Dual-Band Wireless N Adapter (adapter 1)" yet this adapter is working and connected to the internet. Any ideas?
I'm not sure I understand the question. You are free to perform the steps on whatever PC you like for whatever purpose you like. I mean, it's your PC, and your VM, so... ?? Thanks for watching!!
@@fasthowto oh wow thanks then i found the perfect solution to try HA as I'm not a pro and first want to test before investing in any hardware. This is so helpful
Hello! Just wanted to drop by to say thanks! You got a great channel running and I hope you keep it that way! Some of your videos has been really helpful starting my Hassos from scratch since im pretty noob on this. Best wishes for your channel and good luck! PD: Add pig shirts to the giveaway hahaha
Hi, I'm "new" to the VM thing... can I install HA on a Windows PC that's used for a "Media" platform ... a Roon Server or does VM eliminate the "2" use practice?
I followed your video but when I imputed the address on my browser the preparing home assistant interface hs been loading for more than 30 minutes now.. Any help?
I've not run into that issue before. Were you able to get it working? Were you using Win10 or 11? I made an updated version of this video a couple weeks ago for Win11, maybe that will help?
Hi I keep getting a line that says failed to start RPC bind and then my VM gets stuck right after the area where I get the observer url. Have any ideas? Edit: NVM I fixed that issue but now I’m stuck on the prepping home assistant screen for over 30 minutes and when I click the blue dot to see what’s wrong it says that the DNS failed and it had to complete a system autofix. What should I do?
When you get error: Error returned from Supervisor: System is not ready with state: setup , enter in the CLI, ha > banner ,this will solve this, i had it to do twice.
Hey, what about a small laptop with just 4 gb RAM. Because if I set the memory with 2048, it says invalid settings detected. I must lower it down. If I continue it will just display error notification and aborted. I try to lower it but still the same
I think you've answered your own question. That must be a REALLY old laptop. I'm actually shocked it's even able to run windows 10. I haven't seen anything with less than 16gb in like a decade.
does it have to be through a Virtual Machine? and if so, should we give it more memory if this is the only thing that the windows machine will be doing?
I prefer the supervised version, rather than HA portable. As for does it have to be as a VM? No, you can run it on bare metal (I'm making a video right now about how to do that), or you can run it on a Raspberry Pi.
Sure, I'd be happy to - but I don't have a VMware server here. If you'd like to help out, please contact me at the email address listed on my channel and I'll provide shipping info. Thanks for watching!
Why don't you have supervisor and add ons options. Isn't this the Homeassistant OS? I downloaded specifically hass OS and also don't have those options
@@fasthowto I did everything like you, but when I click on configuration and add ons, the page just freezes and I can't click anything. Tried everything again on my laptop, same thing happened
Ok so I got everything installed. When I get to the ip address section mines is blank. There's a ipv6 but there's A LOT if address. Not sure what to do
When you get error: Error returned from Supervisor: System is not ready with state: setup , enter in the CLI, ha > banner ,this will solve this, i had it to do twice.
Hi, I don't have other linux 64 bit in version settings, can you help me please, I can't find any other problem. When starting, it just says error. I have windows 11. is that the problem?
Just tried today and Virtual Box 6.1.38 is not giving me any 64 bit options and I can't choose # of CPUs (its grayed out). This is on Windows 10. Thought maybe I installed 32bit version of Windows somehow but it is 64bit. I am going to try an older version.
@@ericmacintosh2716 ..i had the same..only Linux 32 bits...and 1 CPU ... i changed in the BIos of my Windows 11 Lenovo Tablet PC the options Secure Boot to on....and TPM on...and Virtual Machine to on...now you can change it to linux 64 and virtual cpu to 2....and the Virtual HA is working fine !!
I've never seen that before. Were you able to get it working? Were you trying on Win10 or 11? I just made an updated video a couple weeks ago about how to do this on Win11, maybe there will be some helpful info in there?
Hopefully you watched more of my videos. I switched the software I was using for screen recording, and I've also been using an app that puts a yellow circle around the mouse cursor to make it easier to follow. Let me know what you think! :) Thanks for watching!
During the making if that video, I must've deployed that thing 2 dozen times. Sometimes it was immediate, other times it took 20-30 minutes. No idea the cause of the delay. Let me know if you get it sorted, and thanks for watching!
From another viewer: When you get error: Error returned from Supervisor: System is not ready with state: setup , enter in the CLI, ha > banner ,this will solve this, i had it to do twice. Hope that helps!
@@MrBlubby No idea. Depends on what devices you're trying to use. If this is your first go-round with HA, I'd suggest watching some more of my videos where I cover how to add various devices.
Is your router or firewall acting as a DHCP server? If not, you'll need to configure that. Then once you see the IP address after the initial boot, you can go in and configure a static IP. I'll make a quick video showing how to configure a static IP. Thanks for watching!
It seems like a contest of who speaks faster. The computer lags between what it shows and what you say... In total, it's very rushed shit... If you do like other users with the clear explanation in the right time with the image that shows what you set. From my point of view, you should redo the footage with good quality without so much haste. USELESS FOR BEGINNERS. Useless even for the advanced because they know the steps.
I guess RU-vid on your computer doesn't have a pause button, huh? That must suck. Also, you could relax JUST a bit and realize that this was the FIRST video on this channel, and maybe take a look at some of my later work to see if I've improved. But hey, that's cool, being a jerk is the "in" thing to do, right? What's the name of your channel, again? I'd like to go check out what perfection looks like. PS - thanks for watching!! :)
