@@MACEDONIAbitola I have framed in the windows but have not taken the next step to cut the metal and finish the install. Working on it as time goes. I'm taking vacation in about two weeks and we plan on wrapping up this install. I'll post a link to our video. :) I have not found the DRIP yet, honestly I keep forgetting. I'm going to put it on our list now.

@@BobbyCannon I just came back from Home Depot I Found 3 Different Drip Caps 2 Aluminum and 1 Was Vinyl but it was made to Support a J Channel under the Drip Cap I will Try it Tomorrow 😁want to See how the Vinyl Looks Like 👍

Excellent instructor I learned so much watching this. After viewing this and a couple of your other videos I went outside to look at the add on section of my house that was done with vinyl siding. Man the people that put my vinyl siding made so many mistakes. Over lapping the vinyl siding from both directions on the same wall. Putting the nails in too tight causing the vinyl siding to look wavy. Your instructions are so detailed and informative. Thank you so very much!

Outside corners can ripple if nailed too tight but most other small trim is fine tight.

I sure enjoy your videos. I’m in the process of residing my house, still in the process of removing the old vinyl. But I have noticed water damage behind my old siding, this would be why, I haven’t noticed any drip edge at all. J-Channel is all wrong. Now I know. Thanks for posting this.

I feel a lot better about trimming a window after realizing the siding is not what makes the house watertight. It all comes down to proper flashing and house wrap.

Good video for beginners...if you plan to be a sider this method is fundamentally correct but way too slow. Check your local building codes...many require end dams and a space between top drip cap and js We caulk all Js on to whatever protrusions we are j channelling to water proof as well...we use LePage brand Quad type elastomeric polymer caulking for this. We also never use a tape measure at all....way too slow and easy to hold a j up to window and mark w/ a pencil...on perfectly square windows or vents once you have one side marked you simply cut front and back of j and then fold the j over onto full piece and mark again then repeat until you have 4 equal pieces....saves a lot of time. For miters we never miter straight to a point as when the j channels shrink in winter there will be a gap at every corner. Exterior renovations are our business been doing it since 2007. Not trying to nit pick there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the instructions....just more than 1 way to skin a cat and more efficient ways to get er done when time is a factor...which it is for people installing as a job and pay is piece work.

Hi Shannon, this was the most helpful video on j channels I have watched. My husband and I are building a tiny house and have been learning as we go through online resources. The majority of our windows were from a demolition resale site. They have a thick rim that looks like a j channel around them, already attached. Could this be to replace j channels? I cut the pieces for one of the windows but cannot fit the channel in underneath their channel (ours is 3/4" depth)

I noticed your using a fairly long nail since your attaching through a foam insulation. Over a solid surface, is a standared 1" to 1-1/2" galvanized roofing nail the best choice for attaching both the trim and the siding?

Hey! I am trying to put a ledger board 8 feet up on the house wall which has the vinyl sidings. I know how to remove the vinyl siding. But what should I do to cover the gap between the wood edge and wall edge. Its barely an inch.

Please help me understand this... don't the vertical J's direct water behind the siding at the bottom of the J? They're just trim pieces except that the water run-down from the top seems like it's being directed with the J and then dumped behind the siding. Obviously in this case, it doesn't matter because of the foam, but in my case it's just breathable housewrap on top of OSB.

Yes some water will go behind the siding. Vinyl siding is not a water proof wall covering. That is why it is important that all the house wrap under it is well sealed at all penetrations.

Shannon just came across your channel, spent the afternoon watching the various vinyl siding vids (incredibly informative and helpful - thanks you!) but I do have a question (apologies if I missed the answer in one of the vids!) when the water sheds across the top J channel and runs down the side J channel how can you redirect the water to remain on the outside of the vinyl when it reaches the bottom of the window and not simply run behind the vinyl? Or since the water would be shedding across the tar paper below will it not be an issue.

Most times it is not a problem if the window is properly fitted ,drip edge installed above and proper house wrap .But as added precaution you can install water diversion at the bottom of the J channel side pieces that re directs the water back out over the next row below the siding. A simple 8" wide piece of aluminum flashing is tucked under the J and is long enough to sit over the siding nail fin row below. If you come to my forum with your question I can post a picture there to help you understand.

What do you do around the window trim when the siding is vinyl? I know if it was LP smart siding you would leave like an 1/8 gal around the trim for caulk and expansion.

You would use J trim and leave the siding short by 1/4" to 3/8".

Do you have a video for installing a service panel with meter can with vinyl siding on some type of blocking or board? How do you prevent wind driven rain from getting into the side and bottom j channels?

There are blocks designed for service mounts that come with a removable J channel trim piece. Rain will drive in. Proper sealing and house wrap under the siding is important.

How wide is the house wrap tape that you used? Is drip cap the same as z-flashing? Also, is it necessary for siding to be removed completely to install j-channel? Last, do you have a video that explains what undersill trim is and how to install it? Please provide a link if so. Thanks!

I want to guess that it is about 2-1/2" wide? Other common names for drip cap are "Z flashing" and "window and door cap" I dont have a video for under sill trim at this time. It is not used often I find but I should do one. The main reason to use it is if you have a horizontal cut under an object or soffit where the siding is cut in the narrow part of its profile and J channel is to wide to hold it tight. Use a clip cutter to cut notches in the top edge of the siding and it then slides into the undersell and clips into lip inside of it. I have a box from the gas co that they use to read the monthly bill I assume. It has plastic sticking out the sides on the top and bottom, so that my J channel will not set flush against the box. If I set the J away from the box a little water will surley get in behind the siding How would you deal w/ this ? I tried a molding box like for a light or such but would not fit around the box.

I would have the utility come and remove the box and then you can quickly install a siding block and then they can mount it agin to that. The siding is Gentek brand "Storm" as for the trim it was a custom mix . Its a really dark grey almost black.

You need to account for the thickness of the rigid foam and ensure proper penetration into the plywood, otherwise the siding could fly off in heavy wind.

Dumb question but what keeps the water from going in between the "window" frame and the J channel? Do you need to caulk it?

If the window is flashed properly the little bit of moisture will stay onto of the house wrap and exist out the bottom of the siding. You can run a small bead back in the corner if you like to be safe, but keep it back where its not seen.

Hello, I noticed you didn’t have the insulation right to the corner. I’m using 3/8 Levelwall. Should I run it right to the corners?

For 3/8" insulation you will be fine to run it right to the corner. When using 2" Like I am I use only 1-1/2" on the very corner and cover with 1/2" plywood to may attaching siding corners easier.

I am trying to install a doggie door on garage so the vinyl siding is already on the back of garage. How do you do this when siding is already on? Zip tool the siding off or just bend it to hammer in the J channel?

I just spent 1/2 hour looking thru Lowe's and Home Depot for vinyl "drip cap" like what he's using, only found aluminum, galvanized steel and PVC. Maybe I'm using the wrong search term, also tried "drip edge"?

I had about 12' of j channel and tried to frame one 24" window, I got results as if three men did the job, Larry, Moe and Curly:) But from them I got some dry fit measurements which I can use to try it again. If your not familiar with siding, your probably not going to get each piece to fit right the first time:)

No you dont need to for the sides and bottom but if your window is in a spot where it needs a drip cap over the top then you need J above the drip cap.
